BEIJING (AP) — Fifty years after the Philadelphia Orchestra's history-making visit to China in 1973 that helped build then-fledgling U.S.-China ties, Davyd Booth hopes for a repeat performance. The orchestra's trip comes at a fraught time as the world's two largest economies feud over trade, technology, defense and human rights. Booth noted that a number of Chinese play for the Philadelphia Orchestra, and some of the world's top soloists are Chinese. Booth remembers the trip he made as a 23-year-old violinist, when then-music director Eugene Ormandy brought the Philadelphia Orchestra to China at the request of President Richard Nixon, who a year earlier made his own historic visit to the country. Since then, the full orchestra has made 10 more trips to China and is planning to come again next year.

It’s that second feeling I thought about while visiting Shary Boyle’s “Outside the Palace of Me” at the Museum of Arts and Design (MAD), an exhibition that considers how we create our identities and present them to others — and in turn, how those performances feed back into who we are. To visit the show is to step into Boyle’s palace, or at least one wing of it. “Outside the Palace of Me” is a contemporary art fun house — only the fun isn’t as innocent and uncomplicated as it was in childhood. The exhibition originated at the Gardiner Museum in Toronto, where Boyle was raised and still lives. In the 2000s, Boyle began to make ceramics inspired by the porcelain figurines that were popular among the elites of 18th-century Europe.

An Epic Pilgrimage Across Three Great Religions

Before there was tourism, there was pilgrimage: a trip of endurance, hardship and ecstasy in celebration of one’s faith. On an epic pilgrimage of his own, one writer ventures into the heart of three great religions in Bolivia, Mongolia and Iraq. The Imam Hussein shrine in Karbala the day after Ashura. “They’re poor, but they come thousands of kilometers for the love of Imam Hussein.” PILGRIMAGE WAS A great equalizer. “Labaik ya Hussein,” came the solemn chorus of surrounding voices.

They arrested 29-year-old Shaquille Taylor after surveillance video and witness statements pointed to him as the shooter. The investigation showed Taylor was shooting at a car while Ludwig was walking in a park on the opposite side of the street, according to police. Taylor is charged with aggravated assault and evidence tampering, and was being held on a $280,000 bond. Taylor has been charged criminally several times in the past including three counts of assault with a deadly weapon. Earlier this year, a Nashville judge dismissed those charges, and Taylor was released after three court-appointed doctors testified that he was incompetent to stand trial.

The bands symbolize solidarity with the roughly 240 hostages held by Hamas in Gaza. It’s a feeling that cuts across the deep divisions within Israeli society: the world does not understand us. In the early days after the Hamas terror attack, many of the hostages’ families were reluctant to criticize the government of Netanyahu. Public displays of solidarity with Gaza or criticism of Israel’s military response are few and far between. “This conflict (between Israel and the Palestinians) isn’t black and white, but this war (with Hamas) is,” he added.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Jeff Tweedy is known to fans as a prolific songwriter and poignant lyricist. Perhaps ironically, that fear is in part what compelled a young Tweedy to start writing music four decades ago. But as he gears up to release his third book on Tuesday, Tweedy admits the task of writing no longer daunts him the way it once did. “I think that there was something really important about the way my generation and previous generations invested themselves in music. While the discomfort is at times distracting for him, he says the act of performing does, for brief moments, make him forget.

At Paul Taylor, a Drum Circle and a Fierce Sisterhood

It’s easy to imagine what Keigwin was after: introducing the noise-making excitation of a percussive score and flaunting its liveness. For a better use of a percussive score, Taylor audiences can look this season to Ulysses Dove’s “Vespers,” which the company debuted on Saturday. It begins with a woman sitting on a cafe chair, and the way that Jada Pearman sits up straight speaks volumes. The six Taylor women — especially Pearman and Madelyn Ho, who are having breakthrough seasons — become one fierce sisterhood. Where “Vespers” shows how a percussive score can be effectively channeled, Lauren Lovette’s new “Echo” shows how sharing focus with live musicians can work.

She moved to Tulsa for the Tulsa Remote program, with a one-year stipend of $10,000. AdvertisementAdvertisementThis as-told-to essay is based on a conversation with Lillian Griffith, a 25-year-old data engineer at General Motors, who moved to Tulsa for the Tulsa Remote program. I initially heard about the Tulsa Remote program through my mom, who joined the program in 2021 and then referred me to it later. I applied for the Tulsa Remote program in early 2022 and it only took me about a week to get tentatively approved. I told her that I moved here for the Tulsa Remote program, and then she said she was also in the program.

Jeff Bezos has announced that he would be moving from Seattle to Miami. The moving news comes weeks after he snapped up a second mansion in Miami's "billionaire bunker." After 29 years in Seattle, Amazon founder Jeff Bezos announced on Thursday that he and his fiancé Lauren Sanchez would soon be moving to Miami. Bezos' announcement comes after the billionaire snapped up two massive mansions in Miami's "billionaire bunker" neighborhood over the past few months. It’s not a race, but Lauren Lovette seems to be running, not walking, to create a body of work for the Paul Taylor Dance Company. Last year, after becoming Taylor’s resident choreographer, she presented two new works; this week, as part of the Taylor season at Lincoln Center, she added two more, including the world premiere of “Echo” on Thursday. Dancers, all men, mainly bare chested, began a gliding procession toward the stage, migrating along all the pathways of the theater — the sides, the aisles. This kind of offbeat entrance isn’t exactly new to dance, but Lovette used it in a meaningful way: It was almost primal, as if the music were calling for the dance. One couldn’t exist without the other in this artistic reverberation or, as she named it, echo.

Courtney Bryan’s Music Brings It All Together

The name Courtney Bryan is not one that you’ll currently find on many recordings. Aside from two independently released, jazz-tilting albums from 2007 and 2010, precious little of this pianist and composer’s finely woven, adventurous music is available to hear widely. But you can expect that to change, beyond live performances including the premiere of Bryan’s chamber work “DREAMING (Freedom Sounds),” presented by the International Contemporary Ensemble at Merkin Hall on Wednesday. Symphony orchestras, chamber musicians, vocal groups and jazz performers have all been drawn to her sound. Last spring, the New York Philharmonic premiere of “Gathering Song,” with text by the stage director Tazewell Thompson and hints of post-bop jazz harmony, displayed her place among the most exciting voices in contemporary American music.

But while a handful of African countries are poised to ride the demographic wave, others risk being swamped by it. In the West, racists and right-wing nationalists stoke fears of African population growth to justify hatred, or even violence. The age gap between geriatric leaders and restless youth is “a major source of tension” in many African countries, said Simon Mulongo, a former African Union diplomat from Uganda.
