JPMorgan uncovered several top European stocks it says offer substantial upside potential — as well as some "unattractive" names — right now. The bank is underweight on the euro zone, given that its "Growth-Policy trade-off" is "likely to deteriorate further." Nevertheless, JPMorgan sees pockets of opportunity in the European market. Here are five stocks from its list of "top European picks" which stand out for having substantial upside potential, according to FactSet's consensus price targets: 'Unattractive stocks' JPMorgan also revealed its list of "unattractive stocks" from a sector it's underweight on — banking. Stocks named as " unattractive" include Lloyds Banking Group , BNP Paribas , Svenska Handelsbanken AB and Bank of Ireland Group .

It's a chess move by one of the savviest long-term thinkers in American finance, Capital One CEO Richard Fairbank. Fairbank, who became a billionaire by building Capital One into a credit card giant since its 1994 IPO, is betting that buying rival card company Discover will better position the company for global payments' murky future. The deal, if approved, enables Capital One to leapfrog JPMorgan as the biggest credit card company by loans, and solidifies its position as the third largest by purchase volume. By 2027, the bank expects to add at least $175 billion in payments and 25 million of its cardholders onto the Discover network. The Discover network alone would be worth up to $6 billion if sold to Alphabet, Apple or Fiserv , Sakhrani wrote Tuesday in a research note.

JPMorgan warned that today's economic situation could shift towards 1970s-era stagflation, characterized by high inflation and low growth. Such a situation would drive investors away from stocks towards fixed-income assets offering higher returns. JPMorgan says current geopolitical tensions have parallels to the 1970s and could similarly drive inflation. AdvertisementThe US economy is at risk of tilting towards stagflation, or a period marked by low growth and persistently high inflation, which would prompt investors to favor stocks over bonds, says JPMorgan. An uncertain geopolitical environment, combined with high interest rates, would likely reduce liquidity, JPMorgan said.

Other finance giants have similarly stepped back from previous environmentally friendly initiatives, The New York Times reported. They include BlackRock, which scaled back its participation with Climate Action 100+ in recent weeks, as well as Bank of America, which walked back a pledge to stop financing coal.

"I don't think you can treat the world's second-largest economy as either an alternative investment or un-investable, that would be wide of the mark," Bilton said. Uncertainty around monetary policy and a shrinking labor force are further causes for concern, Bilton noted. Some analysts saw this as potential dovish policy shift from the PBOC, which has appeared reluctant to take measures that could boost the struggling economy. Financial bodies including the International Monetary Fund have called for further monetary policy reforms since then. IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva told CNBC this week that China had been advised to make use of more of its available fiscal and monetary policy space.

Investors expect the Securities and Exchange Commission to greenlight spot ether ETFs in May, but the price action for the crypto could be subdued compared to bitcoin's moves in the runup to its ETF approvals. That compares to the 55% surge bitcoin saw after BlackRock first filed its spot ETF application for the flagship crypto. Regardless, we see the spot ether ETF being less appreciated by the market." JPMorgan estimates a "no more than 50% chance" of spot ether ETF approval by May 23, the final deadline for the SEC to approve or deny the Ark/21Shares application . Schwenkler said any excitement leading up to potential ether ETF approvals will be "less speculative" and that a lot of it is priced in already.
