LONDON, July 16 (Reuters) - Novak Djokovic has experienced everything possible on a tennis court during his trophy-laden 23-year career but said he has never faced a player quite like Carlos Alcaraz. "I didn't expect him to play so well this year on grass, but he's proven he's the best player in the world," Djokovic said after his 1-6 7-6(6) 6-1 3-6 6-4 defeat. I think he's got some nice sliding backhands, some similarities with my backhands. After outplaying Alcaraz in a one-sided first set, Djokovic then slugged out an 85-minute second and had a point for a two-set lead in the tiebreak but dumped a backhand into the net. "Set point, I missed the backhand.

ANNEMASSE, France, July 15 (Reuters) - There were scenes of tears and pain as the 14th stage of the Tour de France turned into carnage, being halted for 25 minutes after a massive crash at the back of the peloton before two more riders hit the deck hard later on Saturday. The main incident occurred on a slippery descent with 146km left in the stage, with Movistar rider Antonio Pedrero forced to abandon the race after being carried off on a stretcher. In the descent of the Col de Saxel, France's Romain Bardet, second in the 2016 Tour de France, crashed on a bend at 60kph and after a long discussion with doctors, pulled out of the race, hiding tears behind his hands. Chaves's EF EasyPost team mate James Shaw crashed along with Bardet and the Briton was carried away on a stretcher. REUTERS/Jim Vondruska/File PhotoCHICAGO, July 12 (Reuters) - Relentless travel demand has sent bookings at U.S. carriers soaring, translating into bumper earnings. Airline shares have suffered because of bearish sentiment about the broader economy as interest rates are up sharply and inflation remains high, analysts said. There are still no signs of air travel demand waning as ticket purchases for the rest of 2023 are up 4%, said Steve Solomon, ARC's chief commercial officer. Believers in airline stocks have seen signs of hope this year. Global Investors' Holmes said airline shares are poised for even more gains.

Second seed Djokovic will hope his 101st match at Wimbledon - against seventh-seeded Russian Andrey Rublev in the last eight - will mark a return to vintage form. Rybakina, meanwhile, had an easier route into the quarter-finals after her Brazilian opponent retired with a back injury while trailing the third seed 4-1 in the first set. "It was really unlucky for Beatriz and I hope she gets better," added Rybakina. It was also a day to rejoice for fellow American Eubanks, who got past Tsitsipas 3-6 7-6(4) 3-6 6-4 6-4 to make the quarter-finals on his Wimbledon debut. "I feel like I'm living a dream right now, this is absolutely insane," said Eubanks, who meets Medvedev next.

Alcaraz powers past Berrettini into quarter-finals
  + stars: | 2023-07-10 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +1 min
LONDON, July 10 (Reuters) - Top seed Carlos Alcaraz roared into the Wimbledon quarter-finals with a formidable display of firepower to down big-serving Italian dark horse Matteo Berrettini on Monday. The Spaniard was beaten to the punch in the opening set but raised his game to claim a comfortable 3-6 6-3 6-3 6-3 win to the delight of the Centre Court crowd. Berrettini came out firing with his serve and forehand rocking Alcaraz but after an injury-plagued year he could not hope to maintain that intensity. Alcaraz was relentless from then on, running former runner-up Berrettini ragged at times. A delay to close the roof midway through the fourth set as the light faded offered Berrettini some respite but Alcaraz quickly completed the win after the resumption.

[1/3] Tennis - Wimbledon - All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club, London, Britain - July 8, 2023 Tunisia's Ons Jabeur celebrates after winning her third round match against Canada's Bianca Andreescu REUTERS/Toby MelvilleLONDON, July 8 (Reuters) - Last year's runner-up Ons Jabeur came from a set down to keep alive her Wimbledon dream with a 3-6 6-4 6-3 victory over former Grand Slam champion Bianca Andreescu on Saturday. The Tunisian, the first Arab woman to reach a Grand Slam final, was outplayed in the opening set on Centre Court. But the sixth seed regained some control with a serve break midway through the second set which enabled her to level. On the resumption, Jabeur had to work hard to hold serve, saving a break point, and she then picked the perfect moment to strike when she broke to love at 4-4. She still had to serve it out, but did so calmly to move into a fourth-round clash against two-time champion Petra Kvitova.

The STOXX 600 (.STOXX) rose 0.1% by 1615 GMT, turning positive midway through the session after data showed the U.S. economy added the fewest jobs in 2-1/2 years in June. However, persistently strong U.S. wage growth pointed to still tight labour market conditions that cemented bets the Fed will resume raising interest rates, later this month. Traders stuck to bets the Fed will raise its benchmark interest rate this month to a 5.25%-5.5% range, but were sceptical of further hikes beyond that. The STOXX 600 fell 3.1% for the week, its worst performance since mid-March. Comments from European Central Bank President Christine Lagarde will be monitored later in the day.

On a recent afternoon along Finland’s border with Russia, an attack from Russian military bases a few miles away seemed a distant prospect. That’s not only because, as NATO’s newest member, Finland now enjoys the guaranteed protection of 30 nations, including the United States — a development that President Biden will celebrate during a visit to Helsinki next week. It may be years before Russia poses a conventional military threat from across the verdant forest of pine, spruce and birch. But there were some Russians to be seen on a sunny June day at the Vaalimaa border crossing, about midway between Helsinki and St. Petersburg. A trickle came and went, many in expensive cars: an Audi Q7, a black BMW with two sleek bikes mounted on a rack.

Hedge funds have reached the halfway point in a challenging year. The first half of 2023 was not how hedge fund managers drew it up. They invested heavily in global macro hiring late last year, expecting plenty more runway in the strategy's revival after a blockbuster 2022. Overall, the hedge fund industry lags far behind, gaining just 1.23% through May, according to the HFRI Fund Weighted Composite Index. Citadel's strength has been one of the few certainties in an otherwise uncertain year for hedge funds.

WARSAW, June 30 (Reuters) - A Polish woman and her 7-year-old son have died after plunging from a Baltic Sea ferry travelling from Sweden to Poland, a Polish police spokesman said on Friday. Swedish authorities said on Thursday the child had fallen off the vessel and that the mother proceeded to jump overboard in an attempted rescue. The Swedish ferry, Stena Spirit, was in the Baltic midway through its journey to Gdynia in Poland from Karlskrona in Sweden when the incident occurred, rescue officials said on Thursday. "At the moment we have no information whether this was due to a malfunction of the ferry," Stena Line spokesperson Agnieszka Zembrzycka told TVN 24. Swedish police issued an appeal to Polish passengers via Poland's state-run news agency PAP asking for information that could explain how the accident occurred.

French and euro zone inflation data is due on Friday. Economists polled by Reuters expect euro zone inflation to fall to 5.6% in June from 6.1% in May. "The June figures in Germany only interrupt the downward trend in the inflation rate and do not mark its end," said Ralph Solveen, senior economist at Commerzbank. Non-harmonized consumer prices rose 6.4% in June year-on-year, following a 6.1% rise in the previous month. The year-on-year rebound in German inflation midway through the second quarter is almost exclusively due to base effects from last year's temporarily-reduced rail fare, said Claus Vistesen, chief eurozone economist at Pantheon Macroeconomics.

Even King Charles Is Feeling Pinched by Rising Prices
  + stars: | 2023-06-29 | by ( Mark Landler | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
LONDON — King Charles III has vowed to streamline the royal family, which would make it less of a burden on British taxpayers. But a report on the family’s finances, released on Thursday, shows that goal remains elusive: The king had to dip into reserves to pay for swelling expenses in a year of momentous royal change. The death of Queen Elizabeth II and the inflation-fueled cost of refurbishing Buckingham Palace drove the family’s official expenses to more than 107 million pounds ($135 million) in the last financial year. That forced Charles to draw 20.7 million pounds ($26 million) from a reserve fund to cover a shortfall between the expenses and the annual grant that the family receives from the government. Charles is midway through an expensive home improvement project at Buckingham Palace, which means he and Queen Camilla are still living at his nearby residence, Clarence House.

A Southwest Airlines Co. plane takes off as representatives and pilots from the Southwest Airlines Pilots' Association (SWAPA) demonstrate outside Chicago Midway International Airport (MDW) in Chicago, Illinois, U.S., on Wednesday, May 18, 2016. Southwest Airlines pilots' union said Thursday it sought to be released from federal mediation for a new labor contract, laying the groundwork for a potential strike as talks with the carrier haven't yet yielded an agreement. The airline and union, the Southwest Airlines Pilots Association, have been in contract talks for more than three years and negotiations have been tense. Pilot strikes in the U.S. are extremely rare, and the Southwest Airlines Pilots Association's request does not mean that one is imminent because of procedures in U.S. labor law. There are several so-called cooling off periods should the National Mediation Board declare an impasse between Southwest and its pilots' union.
