How extreme heat is making your gas more expensive

Extreme heat is contributing to this unwelcome price spike. Saudi Arabia and Russia restrain supplyOf course, extreme heat is not the sole factor behind the gas price jump. Still, high heat is clearly piling pressure on gas prices. The good news is there are signs the impact of high heat on gas prices may be easing. Kloza said gas prices could just be pennies away from their peak of the summer.

New York CNN —OPEC leader Saudi Arabia is extending its oil production cut for at least another month in a move that threatens to drive gasoline and other energy prices even higher. At almost the same time, Russia announced plans to cut oil exports by 300,000 barrels per day, in September according to Reuters. US oil prices rose 1.6% on Thursday to $81.05 a barrel. The prolonged supply restraint from Saudi Arabia and Russia comes even as oil prices have rebounded in recent weeks, helping to lift pump prices for US consumers to nine-month highs. Yawger noted that Russia and Saudi Arabia are relying on higher oil prices to fund their budgets.

US investors are searching overseas for opportunities

CNN —Despite the gains in US stocks this year, some investors are looking for opportunities elsewhere. That’s despite what’s been shaping up to be a banner year for the US stock market — at least prior to this week’s US credit rating downgrade (more on that below). But some investors say that cheaper valuations for non-US stocks, compared to their domestic counterparts, are enticing some on Wall Street to look for deals overseas. The S&P 500 index currently trades at about 19.6 times its expected earnings, according to FactSet. That MSCI All Country World ex USA index has risen roughly 9% on a US dollar basis, underperforming the S&P 500.

Fitch tells CNN why it downgraded America now

New York CNN Business —Fitch Ratings is defending its controversial decision to downgrade the US credit rating by pointing to the nation’s mountain of debt. “The numbers speak for themselves,” Richard Francis, the lead analyst on US sovereign ratings at Fitch, told CNN in an interview on Wednesday. Within minutes of Fitch’s downgrade on Tuesday evening, the White House, Treasury Department and some leading economists slammed the move. Whether America slips into a mild recession or narrowly avoids one “just doesn’t move the needle,” Francis told CNN. ‘The center’s fallen apart’Beyond the fiscal mess, Fitch is growing increasingly worried about the political situation in the world’s largest economy.

Why is the US dollar losing its shine?
  + stars: | 2023-07-28 | by ( Krystal Hur | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +4 min
CNN —The US dollar’s decline has gained speed this month as investors pare back their interest rate expectations. Last week, that helped lead the US Dollar Index, which tracks the dollar versus the British pound, euro, Swiss franc, Japanese yen, Canadian dollar and Swedish krona, to its lowest level in more than a year. The dollar’s decline could offer some support to tech earnings, further boosting those stocks and in turn the broader rally. Gold prices have risen over 6% this year, supported by sliding Treasury yields and a decline in the dollar. The Dow slips to snap 13-day rallyThe Dow Jones Industrial Average index fell Thursday, cutting short a historic 13-day streak of gains.

Bank of America cardholders increased their non-gasoline spending by 1.9% year over year during the week ending July 22, the bank said Thursday. Bank of America cardholders spent 13.2% more on entertainment than a year ago, easily the most out of any category tracked. That is a significant acceleration from the week of July 15, when entertainment spending was up 4.9%. Earlier in July, entertainment spending was flat to down compared with the year before, according to Bank of America. The Dow Jones Industrial Average index has gained 3.2% this month, outperforming the S&P 500 and Nasdaq Composite. The Dow’s gains suggest that investors are starting to buy more economically sensitive stocks as recent data show inflation slowing. That, in turn, indicates they’re becoming increasingly optimistic that the economy could avoid a recession. Conventional Wall Street wisdom says gains in the blue-chip index tend to precede rallies across the broader market. The Dow Jones Transport Average Index, an index of 20 stocks including railroad, trucker, airline and freight companies, has gained 24% this year.

New York CNN Business —Larry Summers, the former Obama and Clinton official, slammed parts of President Joe Biden’s economic agenda as “increasingly dangerous” this week, saying it could end up causing higher prices for Americans. Specifically, Summers took issue with the administration’s trade stance, efforts to prop up US manufacturing and its antitrust crackdown. “It is wrong to suppose that manufacturing-based economic nationalism is a route to higher incomes or better standards of living for the middle class,” Summers said. Manufacturing on the riseBiden has made reviving American manufacturing a central part of his economic agenda. The two-day jump in gasoline prices — the biggest in a year — is combining with a rally in wheat and other agricultural commodities. All told, gas prices have spiked 9 cents in 48 hours. Lower gas prices have been central to progress on slowing price increases. The IMF warned on Tuesday that grain prices could rise by 10% to 15% because of the collapse of the grain deal. New York CNN —The controversial overhaul of Israel’s judicial system risks plunging the country into further turmoil that will hurt its economy and security, Moody’s Investors Service warned on Tuesday. “There is a significant risk that political and social tensions over the issue will continue, with negative consequences for Israel’s economy and security situation,” the credit ratings firm wrote in a report. “Although domestic and geopolitical tensions have traditionally not had a major or lasting impact on Israel’s economy, a serious escalation of tensions with the Palestinians could endanger improved relations” between Israel and regional powers, Moody’s said. In response to the Moody’s report, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu issued a statement defending the resilience of the country’s economy. “This is a momentary reaction, when the dust settles it will become clear that Israel’s economy is very strong,” Netanyahu and Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich said in a joint statement.

David Paul Morris/Bloomberg/Getty ImagesAs recently as July 4, gas prices had experienced a nearly unprecedented year-over-year decline. The unwelcome shift higher in pump prices follows a jump in oil prices, which have climbed to three-month highs as part of a broader rally in commodities. The Fed’s preferred gauge of inflation, the Personal Consumption Expenditures index, showed that inflation was double the target in May (more on inflation shortly). Wednesday’s Consumer Price Index showed that annual inflation slowed from 4% to 3% in June, the lowest level since March 2021. Then on Thursday came Producer Price Index data, which measures the average change in prices that businesses pay to suppliers. That data showed annual wholesale inflation cooled last month to the lowest level in nearly three years. And June of last year was monumental: Annual inflation soared to 9.1%, the highest in more than 40 years largely because of record-high energy costs,” she wrote.

New York CNN —As the second-quarter earnings season kicks off this week, investors want answers on the health of the United States’ companies and its economy. The projected second-quarter earnings decline for companies listed in the S&P 500 is roughly 7.6% compared to the prior year, according to FactSet. That would be the third consecutive quarter of declines and the largest earnings decline reported by the broad-based index since a roughly 32% loss during the second quarter of 2020. ‘An economy that is hemorrhaging’Western sanctions have not delivered a deathblow to the Russian economy. David Tesher: Before we were forecasting a short and shallow recession, but we no longer think there’s going to be a recession. Hard decisions are being made, and that’s going to feed back into corporate growth prospects. The terms are not yet definitive, according to an SEC filing, and the final agreement is subject to approval by the commission. If it’s approved, the SEC will enter a cease-and-desist order with the company, finding DWAC violated “antifraud provisions” connected to initial public offering filings. Nearly two years ago, former President Donald Trump’s media group agreed to combine with DWAC to bring the company public through what’s known as a SPAC, or a Special Purpose Acquisition Corporation. US debt held by the public will climb to a record high of 107% of the gross domestic product in 2029, the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office projected on Wednesday. The projection comes despite the bipartisan debt ceiling deal hailed by its backers as a major deficit reducer. In 2029, debt held by the public will total about $36 trillion, or $104,300 per person, according to the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget, a non-profit public policy organization. Debt held by the public is expected to hit 181% of GDP in 2053, far exceeding any previous record. To put it another way: US debt in 2053 could equal about $384,700 per person, compared to $75,700 today, according to Towner.

New York CNN —Federal prosecutors arrested three investors on Thursday on insider trading charges related to a deal to take former President Donald Trump’s media business public. The value of the securities they purchased went up sharply once the Trump deal was announced, prosecutors say. After signing non-disclosure agreements, prosecutors say they were provided confidential information that Trump Media was a potential target of the SPACs. Prosecutors say Garelick provided to his co-conspirators what he described as “intelligence” about the Trump merger negotiations and the timing of a public merger announcement.
