Leon Wildes, a prominent immigration lawyer best known for his landmark, yearslong fight in the 1970s to prevent John Lennon from being deported and enable the former Beatle to receive permanent residency in the U.S., has died at age 90. Thanks to Wildes' ingenuity and the shocking twists of politics in the 1970s, Lennon's deportation was delayed and ultimately revoked. His honors included the Edith Lowenstein Memorial Award for excellence in advancing the practice of immigration law and the Elmer Fried Excellence in Teaching Award. He attended Yeshiva College as an undergraduate and became interested in immigration law after working with the Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society in the late 1950s. Wildes published articles in the Cardozo Law Review among other journals and wrote a book on the Lennon case, “John Lennon Vs. the USA,” that came out in 2016.

Disney's Bob Iger got out of a jam with two of his biggest stars: Jimmy Kimmel and Pat McAfee. AdvertisementThere aren't a lot of media moguls who could get out of a jam involving two of their biggest stars and accusations of pedophilia. It's unclear when McAfee intends to bring Rodgers back or if he ever will; ESPN reps declined to comment. One of the reasons is that while Disney and ESPN are reported to be paying McAfee $85 million over five years to bring his daily talk show to ESPN, McAfee isn't a Disney employee. Jonathan Majors is out at Marvel after his misdemeanor assault and harassment conviction Monday, a person familiar with the matter told CNBC. The Marvel franchise is in a state of flux right now, with audience goodwill dwindling with each new entrant. Following the incident, but prior to his conviction, Majors was dropped from several marketing campaigns as well as by his talent agency. Disney previously pulled his film "Magazine Dreams," once considered an Oscar contender, was also pulled from the calendar. With Majors' conviction, Disney now has to make a choice: recast the role of Kang or completely alter its plans for the MCU.

Trian Fund Management on Thursday announced it was nominating its CEO, Nelson Peltz, and former Walt Disney CFO Jay Rasulo to the media giant's board, as the firm wages a contentious proxy fight with Disney. The firm announced it was seeking two board seats for Peltz and another media executive, following what it called "significant value destruction and missteps" that the board oversaw. Trian's proxy fight comes as Disney CEO Bob Iger tries to right the ship after a broad restructuring that resulted in thousands of layoffs. Disney has said the proxy fight is apparently in part due to a personal grudge held by Peltz's ally and former Marvel boss Ike Perlmutter. Trian has oversight of shares owned by Perlmutter, who has been an outspoken critic of Disney CEO Bob Iger.

Trian oversees about $3 billion in Disney stock, but the overwhelming bulk of the shares is owned by Perlmutter, whom Disney laid off earlier this year. Broadridge Financial Solutions , which provides proxy services for big corporations during boardroom brawls, could generate as much as $50 million in event-driven revenue from the Peltz-Disney war, according to Evercore ISI analyst David Togut. During Trian's 2017 proxy battle against Procter & Gamble, the consumer giant paid about $60 million to Broadridge for proxy service, Togut said. Evercore ISI said a company's retail investor base is the best representation for Broadridge's revenue. Since Disney has 81% of the retail shares P & G has, it estimated that Broadridge could make up to $50 million from the proxy war. Evercore ISI set an outperform rating on Broadridge and raised its 12-month price target to $230 from $226.

Jesse Green’s Best Theater | Unforgettable ExperiencesJESSE GREENYear of the DramedyIf 2023 was a tragedy in the world, on New York stages it was a dramedy year, highlighted not only by serious plays with great jokes, but also by flat-out comedies with dark underpinnings. Its residents included an unemployed man in his 50s, his barely-holding-on mother, a pregnant woman, two refugees — and us. Seated adjacent to the facility’s dingy common room, we became, in the playwright’s own staging, fellow residents. But if the others eyed us like we might steal a precious sandwich, we could blithely leave when the play was over. The New York Theater Workshop audience, too, learned a great deal, as the questions bedeviling so many relationships — the complexity of consent and the meaning of control — played out before us in this perfectly timed hot-button play.
