Tesla reported third-quarter earnings after the bell, and executives addressed a broad range of questions during the earnings call, including macroeconomic concerns and CEO Elon Musk's pending takeover of Twitter. Earnings: $1.05 vs 99 cents per share (adjusted) expected, based on analysts polled by Refinitiv$1.05 vs 99 cents per share (adjusted) expected, based on analysts polled by Refinitiv Revenue: $21.45 billion vs $21.96 billion expected, per Refinitiv. On an earnings call on Wednesday to discuss the results, Musk answered shareholder questions about electric vehicle demand and a possible share buyback. Tesla is likely to do a "meaningful buyback" next year, he added, potentially between $5 billion and $10 billion pending board approval. Musk is expected to sell a portion of his considerable shares in Tesla to help finance the close of that $44 billion take private deal.
Investor Sven Henrich asked Musk (via his Twitter account "@northmantrader") if the report was true. As CNBC previously reported, Musk posted a series of tweets earlier this month seeking support for what he thought would be the best outcome for Russia's war on Ukraine. Musk proposed UN-supervised votes in Ukraine about whether certain regions of the nation under siege should join Russia. Publicly opining on war could prove risky for Musk and SpaceX, cautions J2 Ventures founder and Managing Partner Alex Harstrick. Musk has also recently sounded off, in an interview with Financial Times, about his vision for resolving China's conflict with Taiwan.

Joe Gebbia, co-founder of Airbnb and chairman of Airbnb.org, during South By Southwest (SXSW) festival in Austin, Texas, U.S., on Sunday, March 13, 2022. Tesla has added Airbnb co-founder, designer, and billionaire Joe Gebbia as an independent member to its board of directors according to a regulatory filing out Wednesday. Adding Gebbia to the Tesla board may help Tesla avoid further conflict with the SEC, which has initiated multiple probes to determine that Musk and Tesla remain in compliance with their agreement. However, Gebbia remains on the Airbnb board and serves as chairman of Airbnb.org, the company's affiliated nonprofit that provides housing to people displaced in times of crisis, including those impacted by natural disasters and global conflicts. Gebbia has not been assigned to any Tesla board committees yet.
With his attention divided, Musk relies on a large team of deputies -- more than 20 people today -- to keep business rolling at Tesla. His cast of direct reports shifts often with strategic or organizational changes, occasional "spot firings" by the mercurial CEO, and resignations. Here are the direct reports we know about as of Sept. 2022. Headcount numbers are approximate and refer to the number of people each of Musk's direct reports was managing as of early September. About 22% of the CEO's direct reports are now based in Texas, around half are still based in California, and more than 90% are men.
The co-founder and CEO of Regent, Billy Thalheimer, said the company has already amassed a backlog of $7 billion worth of orders for its sea gliders. Once on the edge of the harbor, the Regent sea glider accelerates and takes off, staying within one wingspan of the water's surface. "When the vehicle is in the hydrofoils, basically it's like driving above the water surface on stilts," the CTO said. Following successful tests over the summer, Regent now aims for the Viceroy sea glider to enter service by the end of 2025. The startup is also developing a 100-passenger sea glider, dubbed the Monarch, that can carry 25,000 pounds of payload.
At least one Tesla Megapack caught fire early Tuesday morning at the energy storage facility operated by utility PG&E in Monterey, California. PG&E commissioned the 182.5-megawatt (MW) Tesla Megapack system, known as the Elkhorn Battery at Moss Landing, in April this year. The fires in the energy storage systems at Moss Landing are reminiscent of incidents involving Tesla Megapacks in Australia. Following the fire, some residents near the Elkhorn Battery substation at Moss Landing were told to shelter in place due to emissions. PG&E's Jeff Smith noted, "Safety systems at the facility worked as designed when the issue was detected, and automatically disconnected the battery storage facility from the electrical grid."
As a massive wildfire chewed through tens of thousands of acres in California over the past week, smoke and ash billowed into nearby towns including Sparks — home to Tesla's Gigafactory in Nevada. Overall air quality around the Tesla facility was ranked "unhealthy" to "very unhealthy" on Thursday and Friday with around 57 micrograms of fine particulate matter per cubic meter of air, according to the U.S. Air Quality Index. When air quality is that poor, people of all ages are advised to seriously limit outdoor activities, and wear a mask outside to filter smoke and other pollutants. Nevada Gigafactory HVAC filters have been upgraded to a MERV 13 level or higher over the past year to capture wildfire particulates. California's Caldor Fire, for example, burned more than 220,000 acres in 2021, destroying homes, land and leading to hazardous air quality in surrounding areas including in Nevada.
Elon Musk reveals prototypes of the Tesla Solar Roof on October 28, 2016 TeslaEven with a record fourth quarter for its solar energy and storage systems business, Tesla's energy revenue declined by over $24 million in 2019, after several rounds of layoffs that started the prior year. Tesla said, in its annual financial report on Thursday, that it's ramping up solar photovoltaic production at its plant in Buffalo, New York. "We have recently started manufacturing solar panels at this facility in collaboration with Panasonic," the filing states. Since the acquisition, solar energy has been a relatively small and dwindling business for Tesla, in part because of delays in manufacturing and a longer development cycle than expected. Musk said last March that 2019 would be the "year of the solar roof."
