Senator Rick Scott said on Monday he will introduce legislation to create an independent inspector general to oversee the Federal Reserve, as he called the U.S. central bank "unable or unwilling to properly regulate" banks in a letter to Fed Chair Jerome Powell. "I am proposing legislation to establish a presidentially-appointed and Senate-confirmed inspector general for the Federal Reserve," Scott told Powell in the letter. The Federal Reserve is responsible for supervising - monitoring, inspecting and examining - certain financial institutions to ensure that they comply with rules and regulations, and that they operate in a safe and sound manner. Scott's legislation stems from concern in Congress that the Federal Reserve's current inspector general is not independent enough to serve as a check on the central bank. Scott also urged the Fed chief to use the central bank's policy meeting this week to examine the bank failures and identify accountable Fed personnel.

In the past, Elon Musk has spoken out against LiDAR, another type of self-driving sensor. Before 2021, the electric-car maker used radar sensors in addition to cameras to help the vehicles identify obstacles. Workers at Tesla train the cars to identify and respond to different obstacles by labeling footage that is taken by the car's cameras. Other self-driving sensors like LiDAR technology are popular with Tesla's self-driving rivals. In the past, Musk has said LiDAR is "doomed" and too costly.

Tesla plans to open 3,500 of its fast-charging plugs to all electric-car owners by the end of 2024. Until now, Tesla's Supercharger network was only for Tesla owners in the US. According to Loren McDonald, CEO of EV industry consultancy EVAdoption, the Supercharger network serves as Tesla's single biggest marketing tactic. Sam Abuelsamid, an auto industry analyst at Guidehouse Insights, agrees that expanding Supercharger access could help Tesla sell more cars. Analysts see another risk: A boom in demand for limited charging stalls could frustrate Tesla owners by crowding popular stations.
The reliable and extensive Supercharger network used to be only for Tesla owners. Some Tesla owners worry the move could lead to long waits at charging stations. He believes the Tesla charging experience is so far ahead of the competition that non-Tesla owners will arrive in droves. Other Tesla owners Insider spoke with don't foresee major issues and cheer a move that could accelerate EV adoption. Experts said Tesla Superchargers could get more crowded, but there probably won't be major issues.

By now, you've probably heard a lot about the sudden, bank run-driven collapse of Silicon Valley Bank, one of the tech industry's most stalwart and trusted institutions. Tech startups say they can't access their cash deposited in Silicon Valley Bank. Before the FDIC stepped in to save the day (for depositors, anyway), the collapse of Silicon Valley Bank sparked fear, uncertainty, and panic as startups suddenly lost access to whatever cash they had stashed there. Ford hopes to patent a feature that would let its electric cars do burnouts with their front and rear wheels. That's an engineer's way of saying the tech will enable electric cars to peel out in an epic cloud of smoke. Gas-powered muscle cars and sports cars can already do burnouts by locking their front wheels and smashing the gas to spin the rears. What's special about Ford's tech is it'll let electric vehicle owners spin up the back wheels and the fronts in quick succession. "PayPal Mafia" member says Google and Meta "do fake work." The companies over-hired thousands of employees to fulfill a "vanity metric," said investor Keith Rabois. He's part of the infamous PayPal cohort (pictured above — he's number nine) that went on to play influential roles at other major tech companies. Rabois estimates that Facebook parent company Meta and Google each have thousands of employees who don't do much. He even suspects that Google intentionally overhired engineers to prevent them from working at other companies.
Tesla opened up some of its exclusive Supercharging stations to rival electric vehicles. But the cords are designed for Teslas, meaning that owners of some other cars need to use two spaces. Early this month, Tesla opened a handful of its roughly 1,700 US charging stations to non-Tesla vehicles. (Tesla designed its own charging connector, while the rest of the industry uses a different standard.) Tesla owners sometimes experience long lines at charging stations, particularly during popular travel times.

Companies that pay for workers' health insurance are grappling with how to cover the pricey drugs. Medicare, the federal program that provides health coverage for people 65 and older, doesn't cover weight-loss drugs. ArcBest already has a program to help workers lose weight through behavior changes and nutrition. Krutsch said he wants to build on that, covering the weight-loss drugs Wegovy and Saxenda for employees who aren't able to lose weight without medication. The new weight-loss drugs were in short supply in 2022, and that gave employers time to figure out how to handle them, he said.
