BAMAKO, Mali Reuters —Mali’s Prime Minister Choguel Maiga has been fired, state television ORTM said on Wednesday of the civilian who criticized the ruling junta’s failure to organize elections within a promised 24-month transition back to democracy. “It’s all happening in total secrecy, without the prime minister’s knowledge,” Maiga told reporters on Saturday. His comments sparked tensions with the junta, forcing it to postpone a ministerial council meeting planned for Wednesday, a source close to Maiga told Reuters. Maiga had fervently defended Mali’s junta as West African neighbors and international allies criticized its military cooperation with Russian mercenaries and repeated election delays. Before being named prime minister in 2021, Maiga served as Mali’s commerce minister under former President Amadou Toumani Toure and as digital economy minister under former President Ibrahim Boubacar Keita.

Tether told the WSJ in a statement that any suggestion it was involved in criminal activity was “outrageous” and that the company works actively with law enforcement to combat illicit activity. CNN —Record-breaking ocean temperatures, fueled by planet-warming pollution, have turbocharged dozens of Atlantic hurricanes over the last few years, making them more potent and dangerous by increasing their wind speeds. Every hurricane in the 2024 Atlantic hurricane season was made stronger than it otherwise would have been without human-caused climate change, according to analysis from nonprofit climate research group Climate Central. Wind speeds of the 11 hurricanes were increased by 9 to 28 mph by water that was up to 2.5 degrees Fahrenheit warmer because of climate change. Nine of this season’s 11 hurricanes rapidly intensified and climbed up the hurricane category scale due to climate change-driven ocean heat. Climate Central researchers also found that human-caused climate change made exceptionally warm ocean temperatures that fueled Milton’s explosion 400 to 800 times more likely.

CNN —A stained-glass Tiffany window originally designed for an Ohio church has sold for $12.48 million at auction. This is the first time the window has come to auction in 24 years and the sale sets a new auction record for Tiffany Studios. It sold for $2 million back in 2000, which was a world record for a Tiffany window at that time. That was the “thematic precursor” for the Danner Memorial Window 10 years later, Sotheby’s said in a press statement. China's central bank on Wednesday kept major benchmark lending rates unchanged, as Beijing assesses the effects of its recent stimulus measures. The People's Bank of China said it would keep the 1-year loan prime rate at 3.1%, and the 5-year LPR at 3.6%. The 1-year LPR affects corporate and most household loans in China, while the 5-year LPR acts as a benchmark for mortgage rates. Only retail sales beat expectations, with a 4.8% year-on-year increase, indicating that recent stimulus had started seeping into certain sectors of the economy. Goldman, however, maintained "overweight" stance on China equities, forecasting a 13% upside to the benchmark CSI 300 index next year.

Delta Air Lines CEO Ed Bastian said the Trump administration's approach to regulation could be a "breath of fresh air." Speaking to reporters ahead of Delta's investor day, Bastian noted that President-elect Donald Trump campaigned saying he would take a "fresh look" at regulation and bureaucracy. "We have to invest in this industry," American Airlines CEO Robert Isom said at the Skift Aviation Forum in Dallas last week. In an interview last week, Sun Country Airlines CEO Jude Bricker said: "We just need stability and resources at the DOT."
