TORONTO (AP) — A Canadian judge has ruled that the government’s use of the Emergencies Act to quell weeks of protests by truckers and others angry over COVID-19 restrictions in 2022 was unreasonable and unconstitutional. In the decision released Tuesday, Federal Court Justice Richard Mosley said the invocation of the Emergencies Act led to the infringement of constitutional rights. A 33-year-old man has been arrested twice in roughly 48 hours after stalking Taylor Swift outside her Manhattan home, the police said on Tuesday. The man, David Crowe, of Seattle, was charged by the police on Monday with two counts of harassment and two counts of stalking. A neighbor and a security guard at the pop star’s building in TriBeCa had spotted Mr. Crowe, who was first arrested near Ms. Swift’s residence over the weekend. Around 1:30 p.m. Saturday, security personnel called 911 to report that Mr. Crowe had tried to enter the residence, the police said. A judge had issued the warrants after Mr. Crowe failed to show up to court to answer those summonses.

Over 100,000 people have used such “same-day registration” in North Carolina during each of the last two presidential election years, so slight adjustments in the closely divided state could make a difference in this November's elections for president, governor and other statewide positions. WASHINGTON (AP) — The Supreme Court on Monday rejected an appeal from a former business partner of presidential son Hunter Biden who was seeking to overturn his criminal conviction for securities fraud. As is typical, the justices did not comment in leaving in place a federal appeals court ruling that reinstated the fraud conviction of Devon Archer. A lower court judge had earlier set aside a jury verdict that found Archer guilty of fraud and ordered a new trial. It was the second time the Supreme Court denied Archer's appeal. His conviction was overturned later that year before the court of appeals in New York reinstated it in 2020.

A lawyer for a writer who says Donald Trump sexually abused her in the 1990s and then defamed her while president in 2019 said Saturday that the infamous “Access Hollywood” tape and two women who accused Trump of abuse will not be put before a New York jury considering defamation damages. CNN —New York’s top court has dismissed an appeal from Donald Trump’s lawyers to remove the gag order placed on the former president in the New York Attorney General’s civil fraud trial. New York’s appellate court had reinstated the order from Judge Arthur Engoron, which prohibited Trump and his attorneys from making public statements about the courtroom staff in the $370 million trial that wrapped up this month, in November, 2023. Tuesday, the New York’s Court of Appeals dismissed the appeal, stating that “no substantial constitutional question is directly involved.”The order, initially issued by Engoron in October, bars Trump from making public statements about court staff after Trump made numerous comments about a clerk, who the former president said is biased against him.
