In December, the policymakers collectively forecast that they would cut their rate three times this year. The Fed prefers for inflation to be about 2%, which it sees as having little negative effect on the economy. Fed officials, he added, will want to see further evidence that inflation is still on track to 2% before embarking on rate cuts. Before Waller spoke, Wall Street investors had placed a 72% likelihood of a rate cut in March, based on futures prices. Waller's comments followed similarly optimistic remarks from John Williams, president of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, last week.

December's inflation data provided just enough evidence to show that the pace of price increases is continuing to cool while also serving up a reminder that the war isn't won yet. One is that regardless of the headline numbers, the parts of inflation that don't fluctuate as much have been fairly stubborn. So-called sticky inflation, which includes things such as housing costs, auto insurance, medical care services and household furnishings, are indeed holding higher. On a one-month annualized basis, the measure also was at 4.6%, but that's up a full percentage point from the previous month. Fed policymakers also are attuned to the relationship between wages and inflation.

Firms hiking prices likely helped avoid a deeper slump in profits stemming from a slowing economy, Société Générale strategist Albert Edwards said. "The Greedflation driven surge in margins helped stop the profits slowdown turning into a deep downturn. A recession still poses a decent risk to the economy, though investors have warmed up to the prospect of a soft-landing.

Households have been hit hard by rate hikes while Wall Street has thrived, economist Stephanie Pomboy says. Pomboy flagged a surge in consumer credit-card debt in November as proof of mounting pressure. AdvertisementAmerican households are bearing the brunt of higher interest rates, while financial firms are raking it in, according to economist Stephanie Pomboy. She cautioned in September that the Fed's rate hikes would ultimately have a "severe impact" on the economy, companies, and household credit. She also predicted that in the aftermath of the disaster, Americans would balk at racking up credit-card debt again as they did after the mid-2000s housing bubble burst.

Dividend-paying stocks took a backseat to this year's tech-driven market rally, but 2024 could be the year that they come back in vogue. A couple of catalysts could swing the pendulum back in favor of dividend payers in 2024, including the Fed's forecast for three rate cuts in the new year. "Not only do you get the dividend yield and dividend growth, but you get some capital appreciation perhaps – that's where it gets interesting," he added. Special dividend payers Kim Abmeyer, certified financial planner and founder of Abmeyer Wealth Management in Dallas, sees dividend-paying stocks coming into focus for 2024. The energy company in November announced that it raised its regular dividend by 10% and it declared a $1.50 per share special dividend.

Many biotech stocks struggled in 2023 despite a robust year for U.S. drug approvals. "We expect this environment to continue but look forward to the prospect of lower interest rates in 2024." When that happens, Canaccord Genuity said to expect a "strong rally across the biotech sector rewarding innovative, but riskier assets." Analysts have said the rich price reflects the opportunity for ImmunoGen's Elahere cancer treatment , which has quickly established itself as the standard of care for types of ovarian cancer. The market is going to worsen early in 2024 before recovering, according to Evercore ISI. The firm sees the S & P 500 falling in the first half of next year to 3,970 as a "recession materializes and politics [amplify] volatility." An inverted yield curve also portends the start of a recessionary period in the first quarter of 2024, he added. "'Defense Wins Championships' is a consistent theme between [the] last hike and first cut in the recession playbook," said Emanuel. By comparison, the S & P 500 is up 20.1% year to date.

Spotify is cutting two big podcasts, "Heavyweight" and "Stolen," Bloomberg reported. The podcasts in question, "Heavyweight" and "Stolen," will be canceled after completing their current seasons, the report said. Given the cancellations, the streaming giant's viral Spotify Wrapped campaign might soon be overshadowed by a new mantra: "Spotify Scrapped." "Heavyweight" was listed as one of The New York Times' top podcasts of the year and "Stolen" won a Pulitzer Prize and Peabody Award. The news of the podcasts' axing comes as Spotify made its third round of layoffs this year.

Broadridge Financial Solutions , which provides proxy services for big corporations during boardroom brawls, could generate as much as $50 million in event-driven revenue from the Peltz-Disney war, according to Evercore ISI analyst David Togut.
