CNN —Scientists have uncovered communities of animals such as tube worms and snails living in volcanic caves beneath the seafloor, revealing a previously unknown but thriving ecosystem. An eelpout swims by a tower of tube worms at the Tica Vent, a hydrothermal vent site on the East Pacific Rise. Tube worms are immobile creatures that settle and grow in one place without moving, like barnacles. A large cluster of stationary tube worms thrives at the Fava Flow Suburbs, a site on the East Pacific Rise. Researchers use a robotic arm to lift a small portion of volcanic rock to verify that life exists beneath the ocean floor.

This report is from today's CNBC Daily Open, our international markets newsletter. CNBC Daily Open brings investors up to speed on everything they need to know, no matter where they are. Data on employment, inflation and economic growth have signaled that the "economy may not be slowing as much as desired," Waller said. A soft landing is the scenario in which inflation drops to the Fed's 2% target while economic growth and employment remain healthy. A "no landing," on the other hand, is when the economy continues expanding as inflation remains high.

After years of living in highly populated cities, my husband and I moved to Raleigh, North Carolina. AdvertisementI grew up in a small city in South Carolina and went to college in rural Virginia. Here are a few of my favorite things about life in the Southern city. The best part is that we pay less a month for our mortgage than we did for our small NYC rental. Tokyo Metro's initial public offering could drive momentum in the Japanese market and attract more companies into the country, analysts said, as China continues to lose steam. In Japan's biggest IPO in six years, Tokyo Metro raised 348.6 billion yen ($2.3 billion) after pricing its shares at 1,200 yen apiece, according to the company's regulatory filing on Tuesday. "I think both the Tokyo government as well as the Ministry of Finance, obviously, won't want the IPO to fail." Hyundai India also started taking orders for its $3.3 billion IPO in Mumbai this week, in a deal set to become the country's biggest listing. The biggest worry for allocators to hedge funds is crowding, according to a new Bank of America survey. AdvertisementAllocators are growing more worried about crowding at hedge funds. The survey — which spoke to 160 allocators with roughly $680 billion invested in around 4,300 hedge funds globally — found that the biggest hedge fund managers in the industry are still gobbling assets and market share despite their investors bickering about costs. This flavor of hedge fund brought in $10 billion in net flows in 2024's first six months, and the average multimanager firm runs $1.7 billion. Despite this, allocators, paradoxically, have grown even more concerned about crowding risks in their hedge fund portfolios.

CNN —Prague, a city as famous for its beer as its historic architecture, is set to ban late-night bar crawls, seeking to end its reputation as a party destination. Prague’s deputy mayor, Jiri Pospisil, said the city wants to discourage tourists who come “for a short time only to get drunk” in favor of “a more cultured, wealthier tourist,” according to the AFP news agency. The news, announced on Monday, follows complaints from residents in Prague 1, the city’s historic district – home to the UNESCO-protected Old Town Square, Prague Castle and the Charles Bridge – over noise caused by rowdy pub crawls. Prague joins many cities across Europe that have been pushing back against tourists in recent months. Horror fans are calling the main character, Art the Clown, a new icon for the genre. Fans say the success of "Terrifier 3" has cemented its lead character, the demonic, mute serial killer Art the Clown, as a horror icon. Now, fans have hailed Art as a modern horror icon akin to other slasher villains such as Norman Bates, Leatherface, Michael Myers, and Freddy Krueger. My horror hot take:Art the Clown is the first true horror icon to emerge thus far this century (Pennywise was already an icon under Tim Curry, and the “Saw” films have gone on without Jigsaw). Contradictory messages about inflation and the labor market have investors on guard. Price growth is slowly falling from its peak, but it exceeded expectations in September after a hot reading in August. AdvertisementInflation is a threat that won't sink the economyWhile there's plenty of economic data to get excited about, persistent price growth is a problem. "If we're going to be data dependent, we have to at least look at the data," Sosnick said. Higher-than-hoped inflation is rarely compatible with an economic downturn, so if price growth does persist, it likely won't be in an earnings-crushing contraction.
