In the spring of 2020, at the height of the pandemic, the always bustling Dam Square in Amsterdam was deserted, silent and surrounded by concrete counterterrorism blocks. The Dutch street artist Frank de Ruwe, who goes by the name of Frankey, decided these daunting studded blocks resembled something more innocent — giant Lego blocks — and that the city needed something to lighten the gloom. The result? Later that summer, Frankey created and placed a giant yellow-and-black Lego figure of the Dutch folk singer André Hazes, whose songs have been pub favorites in the Netherlands for more than 40 years.

Currently nearing completion and set to reach a height of 301 meters (988 feet), Foster’s Lusail Towers are poised to claim the title of Qatar’s tallest buildings, surpassing the current record holder, The Torch Doha. New York CNN —Shares of New York Community Bank (NYCB) fell by as much as 20% in after-hours trading on Thursday after the beleaguered regional lender said in a filing it had identified “material weakness” in the company’s controls. The issues caused a $2.4 billion loss to shareholders last quarter, NYCB said. The bank also announced that Alessandro DiNello, its recently appointed executive chairman, will be the new president and CEO, effective immediately. In the same filing, NYCB disclosed Hanif (Wally) Dahya resigned from serving as director of the board. In his February 25 resignation letter, he said he “did not support the proposed appointment” of DiNello to president and CEO.

☆ Excessive alcohol drinking drove about 488 deaths per day during the pandemic, CDC says

The average number of deaths related to excessive alcohol use increased more than 29% from 2016-17 to 2020-21, said the report, published Thursday. Drinking excessively can lead to deaths directly related to alcohol, such as alcoholic liver disease, alcohol poisoning, suicide by excessive alcohol use, crashes and falls, and fetal alcohol syndrome, among others. For the past two decades, deaths from excessive alcohol use have been increasing in the United States, the CDC said. “We know that there’s a lot of evidence about what works to prevent excessive drinking, and to reduce alcohol-related harm. While the new study focused on excessive alcohol use, it isn’t measuring the harms of all levels of alcohol use.
