Read previewProductivity for many companies is soaring — all thanks to the "Big Stay." AdvertisementThere are a couple of reasons workers have shifted to the Big Stay, Glassdoor Chief Economist Aaron Terrazas told Business Insider. The US economy added 275,000 jobs last month, but the job market recovery from the pandemic is slowing. The Big Stay has benefits, but they may be short-livedTerrazas said lower quit rates are giving way to high productivity across companies. At the same time, job openings have tumbled since post-pandemic highs, forcing a lot of workers to stay in their roles.

ROME (AP) — For nearly six decades, the Tirelli atelier in Rome has woven itself into the fabric of Italian and international film history, earning the nickname the “Oscar tailor’s shop” for its contribution to cinematic costume design. North Carolina Sets Up Combative Race for Governor

North Carolina voters Tuesday set up a historic – and likely combative and extremely expensive – race for governor, nominating Democrat Josh Stein and Republican Mark Robinson for what is shaping up as the most closely watched gubernatorial race of the year. With 8% of ballots counted, Stein had won 72% of the Democratic primary vote, while Robinson captured 63% of the Republican primary vote. North Carolina is a nominally red state that is nonetheless politically competitive. Robinson has called public school teachers "wicked people" and has referred to survivors of school shootings as "prosti-tots." Robinson, Cooper says, is very much like Trump, who recently called Robinson "Martin Luther King on steroids."

New York CNN —JetBlue Airways announced Monday it is pulling out of its deal to purchase Spirit Airlines. The Justice Department had argued that airfares could go up if Spirit was no longer an independent airline. JetBlue agreed to pay Spirit $69 million as part of its decision to end the deal, JetBlue said. Spirit said it was always prepared to continue as an independent airline, given the regulatory challenges the deal faced. “We are disappointed we cannot move forward with a deal,” Spirit CEO Ted Christie said.

While loneliness among older adults has been an issue for years, the pandemic exacerbated it across all age groups. Some experts told me that cities could help counter loneliness with policies that bolster senior centers and ensure accessibility to vital resources and that governments should invest more in mitigating loneliness for older adults. That's largely why Lamy felt compelled to organize an easy way for older adults in the community to meet and talk to one another. What we know is that isolation and loneliness among older people tend to lead to pretty serious health complications very quickly. So there is a real reason for us to try to help older people find connection."

Meet the Artist Delighting Amsterdam

In the spring of 2020, at the height of the pandemic, the always bustling Dam Square in Amsterdam was deserted, silent and surrounded by concrete counterterrorism blocks. The Dutch street artist Frank de Ruwe, who goes by the name of Frankey, decided these daunting studded blocks resembled something more innocent — giant Lego blocks — and that the city needed something to lighten the gloom. The result? Later that summer, Frankey created and placed a giant yellow-and-black Lego figure of the Dutch folk singer André Hazes, whose songs have been pub favorites in the Netherlands for more than 40 years.

The average number of deaths related to excessive alcohol use increased more than 29% from 2016-17 to 2020-21, said the report, published Thursday. Drinking excessively can lead to deaths directly related to alcohol, such as alcoholic liver disease, alcohol poisoning, suicide by excessive alcohol use, crashes and falls, and fetal alcohol syndrome, among others. For the past two decades, deaths from excessive alcohol use have been increasing in the United States, the CDC said. “We know that there’s a lot of evidence about what works to prevent excessive drinking, and to reduce alcohol-related harm. While the new study focused on excessive alcohol use, it isn’t measuring the harms of all levels of alcohol use.
