You may have noticed how desperate some politicians' fundraising appeals can sound. AdvertisementIf you're a person who's at all involved in politics, from the most seasoned operative to the casual observer, you're undoubtedly familiar — and perhaps a bit annoyed — with the desperate fundraising appeals uttered in the voice of politicians. If the candidate is inspiring to voters on their own, there's less need to scare people into sending them money. "There's an assumption that the more desperate the appeals become the better the fundraising works," Pennington said.

President Joe Biden's student loan forgiveness program can proceed after a judge Wednesday let a temporary restraining order on the plan expire. He wrote that he would transfer the case to the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Missouri. The states that brought the lawsuit have argued that the administration’s rule that would mass-cancel student debt would be detrimental to income tax revenue. Biden laid out the revised plan in April after the Supreme Court nullified the administration’s original student debt forgiveness program in 2023. If the administration’s proposed rules are finalized this fall, it would bring the total number of recipients of student debt relief under Biden's tenure to 30 million, the Department of Education said in August.

The Biden administration's sweeping student loan forgiveness plan was temporarily blocked again Thursday by a Missouri judge, just one day after a federal judge in Georgia said he would let a restraining order against the relief expire. St-Louis-based U.S. District Judge Matthew Schelp, an appointee of Republican former President Donald Trump, issued the latest preliminary injunction against Biden's relief plan. The latest order capped 24 hours during which federal student loan holders were subjected to judicial whiplash, as a lawsuit challenging Biden's aid package, brought by seven GOP-led states, bounced from Georgia to Missouri courts. The states bringing the suit — Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Missouri, North Dakota and Ohio — allege that the U.S. Department of Education's new debt cancellation effort is illegal. Hall directed the case to be transferred to Missouri, because the states claim that Biden's plan would most harm student loan servicer Mohela, or the Missouri Higher Education Loan Authority.

The decision underscores the fractious relationship Starbucks has had with organized labor as more and more workers at its stores unionize. In 2022, when Schultz was interim CEO, he attended a company event in Long Beach, California, to address and improve working conditions at Starbucks stores. According to the administrative law decision, he “had an angry expression on his face.” The NLRB decision upholds an administrative law judge’s decision in October 2023. CNN —Russia has captured the key eastern Ukrainian town of Vuhledar, ending months of resistance and underscoring the scale of Kyiv’s challenge as it heads into its third wartime winter. While not a transport and logistics hub like Pokrovsk, Vuhledar was heavily fortified and viewed as a crucial bastion at the intersection of Ukraine’s eastern and southern fronts. Just like Avdiivka, another strategic eastern town which fell in February, Vuhledar is a victim, not of Russian strategic prowess, but brute force attrition. For two years Ukraine had put up a formidable defense there, as Russia tried and failed several times to take the town. “It’s painful, Vuhledar or rather those who settled there, drank a lot of blood,” he said.
