Ann Lurie, a self-described hippie who went on to become one of Chicago’s most celebrated philanthropists, in one instance giving more than $100 million to a hospital where she had once worked as a pediatric nurse, died on Monday. Her death was announced in a statement by Northwestern University, to which Ms. Lurie, a trustee, had donated more than $60 million. An only child raised in Miami by a single mother, Ms. Lurie protested the Vietnam War while in college and planned to join the Peace Corps after she graduated. In interviews, she said she chafed at the trappings of wealth even after marrying Robert H. Lurie. Mr. Lurie held stakes in the Chicago Bulls and the Chicago White Sox.

LONDON — European stocks are poised to open higher Friday as investors look ahead to key inflation data from the euro zone and U.S. Regional stocks ended the previous session lower, as retail was dragged lower after a profit miss for H&M. Markets are watching out for fresh inflation data from France, Italy and Spain later in the session, while Germany releases unemployment figures and retail sales. Asia-Pacific markets climbed on Friday as investors assessed key economic data out of Japan. Meanwhile, U.S. stock futures were mixed ahead of the release of May's core personal consumption expenditures price index, the U.S. Federal Reserve's preferred inflation gauge, Friday morning.

The Biden administration said this week that it opposed gender-affirming surgery for minors, the most explicit statement to date on the subject from a president who has been a staunch supporter of transgender rights. The draft guidelines would have lowered the age minimums to 14 for hormonal treatments, 15 for mastectomies, 16 for breast augmentation or facial surgeries, and 17 for genital surgeries or hysterectomies. The final guidelines, released in 2022, removed the age-based recommendations altogether. Levine shared her view with her staff that publishing the proposed lower ages for gender transition surgeries was not supported by science or research, and could lead to an onslaught of attacks on the transgender community,” an H.H.S. spokesman said in a statement on Friday evening.

But that gave too much power to unelected government officials, according to conservatives, who ran a coordinated, multiyear campaign to end the Chevron doctrine. The Environmental Protection AgencyEnvironmentalists fear that the end of the Chevron doctrine will mean the elimination of hundreds of E.P.A. “I would expect the industry to attack the F.D.A.’s authority to do premarket review at all,” said Desmond Jenson, deputy director of the commercial tobacco control program at the Public Health Law Center. Shares of H&M plunged more than 14% on Thursday morning after the company reported a smaller-than-expected increase in second-quarter profits and cast doubt over its June sales and full-year profit margin target. The world's second largest retailer said operating profit for the period between March and May came in at 7.1 billion Swedish kroner ($672 million), below the 7.37 billion Swedish kroner anticipated by analysts, according to an LSEG poll cited by Reuters. The second-quarter result was nevertheless above the 4.7 billion Swedish kroner recorded in the same period last year. Further weighing on stock, H&M CEO Daniel Ervér cast doubt over the company's ability to meet its margin target this year. "Our goal of an operating margin of 10 percent for full-year 2024 remains in place," he said.

CNN —The confrontation in Atlanta between Joe Biden and Donald Trump Thursday night has a good chance of becoming the most fateful presidential debate in US history. The momentous nature of this debate can only be fully understood against the backdrop of the unprecedented politics of the times. But the tension surrounding this year’s first debate in June, rather than in September or October as usual, is palpable. “The closer the election, the greater the chance that a debate could influence it,” said Aaron Kall, director of debate at the University of Michigan, who has conducted an in-depth study of every presidential debate. Biden has raised the stakes for himself heading into the debate higher than those any modern president faced.

When President Biden and former President Donald J. Trump take the debate stage on Thursday, each will be on guard against a gaffe or looking to deliver a one-liner that could dominate the news. Such presidential debate moments — missteps, one-liners, flops and various “Oops” moments — can even land in the history books. In the first televised presidential debate, in 1960, a confident Senator John F. Kennedy dominated Vice President Richard Nixon, who appeared sweaty and disheveled as he recovered from an illness. Bush impatiently checked his watch in full view of the cameras. President Ronald Reagan — in a move relevant to both candidates this cycle — used a joke to deflate concerns about his age in 1984.

Coming into and through 2019, the economy was strong and the Consumer Price Index, a key measure of inflation, was low. For some, that seemed like a bad thing — economists worried that chronically low inflation could increase the risk of future economic stagnation. The Personal Consumption Expenditures index, a slightly delayed price measure that the Fed uses for its 2 percent inflation target, similarly fell. Within a few months, inflation began to pick up. Price jumps began to moderate even in service categories, which made economists hope that the deceleration might be the real deal.

The country is confronting a perilous moment, internally estranged over politics and culture and as multiple foreign policy crises deepen. Biden has dedicated his term to expanding NATO to counter the Kremlin’s onslaught on Ukraine and threat to wider Europe. This leaves Biden badly needing to use Thursday night’s debate to convince voters that he can make their lives better — and soon. Post-game coverage of Thursday’s debate is certain to zero in on the best verbal jabs, soundbites and the stamina and energy of the rival candidates. But the most meaningful impact of the clash between Trump and Biden will only begin to unfold after noon on Inauguration Day, January 20, 2025.

To the Editor:Re “Social Media Platforms Need a Health Warning,” by Vivek H. Murthy, the U.S. surgeon general (Opinion guest essay, June 18):Dr. Murthy makes a compelling case for social media warning labels and offers parents sound suggestions for protecting their kids from toxic content. An entire generation of children is growing up watching their parents, older siblings and other family members glued to their phones, posting pictures, sharing memes, debating politics and doomscrolling day and night as life passes them by. Consistently modeling the behavior they’d like to see in their kids would circumvent even the most powerful algorithms and make parents the ultimate social media influencers. I’ve learned this from studying American reactions to almost every general election presidential debate since 1992. Yet those things often have little to no discernible impact on the opinions of many people watching at home. To be fair, some of the debates I watched with voters, like Bill Clinton and Bob Dole’s in 1996, had no major impact on the electorate’s mood. Others — like the three-way town hall debate with Mr. Clinton, George H.W. Bush and Ross Perot in 1992 and the first George W. Bush-Al Gore debate in 2000 and the three Donald Trump-Hillary Clinton collisions — arguably changed history.

In some ways, that puts both men on equal footing when they walk onto Thursday’s debate stage. National ArchivesRonald Reagan, who like Biden retreated to Camp David for debate preparations in 1984, did not appear to his aides entirely engaged in the exercises. Walking off the debate stage after a rambling final answer, Reagan confessed to aides that he’d flopped. “They’re making me do my homework.”Walking off the debate stage in Denver, Obama did not initially realize just how bad his confrontation with Romney had gone. “On Social Security, we’ve got a somewhat similar position,” Obama told Romney during one of the exchanges that caused Obama’s advisers to cringe.

We’re looking back at the strongest, smartest opinion takes of the week from CNN and other outlets. When Biden and Trump meet in a debate on CNN Thursday, expect part of the audience to be wondering exactly who and what will come next. Biden, who’s battling low approval ratings, is sticking with Vice President Kamala Harris, whose polls are also bleak. There were 28, and we’ve had 11 so far this year, Bridget Johnson noted in the first of a CNN Opinion series about America’s preparedness. “It’s a measure of his hold on American society that he’s still revered a half-century later,” wrote Frederic J.
