CNN —Texas has separated at least 26 migrant family units on the southern border since July 10 under Gov. Greg Abbott’s Operation Lone Star border initiative, according to Texas Rio Grande Legal Aid immigration attorney Kristin Etter. “This is just a very harsh and cruel detour from the asylum process,” Etter told CNN in an interview Wednesday. This is a shift in Texas DPS policy on the border, Etter says. Children and their mothers were never separated, but instead turned over to the US Border Patrol together,” Texas DPS Communications Chief Travis Considine said in a statement.

U.S. fast-food chains add automation to boost speed

With mass shortages of low-cost labor due to the pandemic, chains shifted to technology investments in their kitchens to fill the gap. The addition of automation tools in restaurant chains could cut down on wait times, driving higher consumer engagement and increasing sales for the rest of the year, restaurant executives say. Thirty-six percent of 1,000 U.S. people told HungerRush in a survey in May that they believed major restaurant chains don’t have enough staff to take orders, prepare food, and handle deliveries. Last year, Domino's Pizza Enterprises announced an automated pizza prep device in partnership with Picnic Works, a Seattle-based food-automation startup. "Anytime there's new automation, it creates new kinds of jobs," said Gaurav Kachhawa, chief product officer at Gupshup, a conversational messaging platform.

New York CNN —The photos online of Taco Bell’s Mexican Pizza last September reeled in New York resident Frank Siragusa. From webbedgiant/RedditThese claims against Taco Bell are not the first of its kind for Siragusa’s lawyers, James Kelly and Anthony Russo. Siragusa is seeking $5 million for customers who purchased Taco Bell menu items affected by false advertising practices. The lawsuit comes just as Taco Bell wrapped up its battle against Taco John’s for the “Taco Tuesday” trademark, in which the taco chain successfully petitioned for the phrase to be available for all. Taco Bell did not immediately respond to CNN’s request for comment.

In a proposed class action filed on Monday in Brooklyn federal court, Siragusa accused Taco Bell of deceiving consumers by falsely advertising its Mexican Pizza, Veggie Mexican Pizza, Crunchwrap Supreme, Grande Crunchwrap and Vegan Crunchwrap as containing "at least double" their actual content. He is not alleging that the items contain less content than Taco Bell describes on its website. Taco Bell, a unit of Yum Brands (YUM.N), did not immediately respond to requests for comment. What Is It About Montecito?

Montecito is where Gwyneth Paltrow goes when the pressures of Brentwood are too much. Jennifer Aniston bought a $16.5 million property from Ms. Winfrey, who had not had time to use it. But it’s not just the famous who come to Montecito, it’s also the straight-up rich. Montecito is loaded with the less-recognizable names behind very recognizable things, including Ty Warner, the press-shy inventor of Beanie Babies, who lives in a rose-colored mansion with views of the whole landscape. It’s a dizzying combination of old wealth, new wealth and outrageous physical beauty that has begun to attract an ever-wider range of dreamers.

Along Texas’ 1,200-mile-long border with Mexico, state troopers routinely arrest migrants for trespassing. Texas National Guard troops unspool razor wire along the banks of the Rio Grande. Greg Abbott has been testing the legal limits of what a state can do to enforce immigration law. He has overseen aggressive deterrence by state police officers at the border and mounted a brazen challenge to federal authority by placing a floating barrier in the middle of the Rio Grande. In the small border city of Eagle Pass, the state police bulldozed vegetation from a sandbar in the middle of the river last month to create a new security outpost.

The downside of car camping is the fact that these campgrounds are often packed to the rafters with other campers. While RV camping may seem like a recent phenomenon, it’s actually been around for more than 100 years. Among the websites that list RV campgrounds and post very useful user ratings are RVshare/Hipcamp, RV Life and Good Sam. Other than maybe car camping, it requires the least expense and equipment. The U.S. Forest Service and Bureau of Land Management has set aside areas for free camping in national forests, national grasslands and BLM-managed lands.

This “prevention through deterrence” framework risks worsening the humanitarian crisis at the border. Mr. Biden must change course, and that begins by stopping Mr. Abbott. The president should order the immediate removal of the lethal razor wire and obstructions in the Rio Grande and ensure that Border Patrol are unimpeded by Texas Department of Public Safety officers— today. And I can see why it might be tempting to allow the governor to assume ownership over the Texas border rather than pursue a public confrontation on an issue that is this politically charged. Be on the right side of history, demonstrate the kind of strong, decisive leadership that Americans are desperate for, and the politics will follow.

Migrants seeking asylum rest on an island while attempting to cross the Rio Grande river into the United States on July 18, 2023 in Eagle Pass, Texas. Greg Abbott over a floating barrier that the state placed on the Rio Grande to stop migrants from crossing into the U.S. from Mexico. The suit also claims that Texas unlawfully installed the barrier along without permission near the border city of Eagle Pass. In anticipation of the lawsuit, Abbott sent President Joe Biden a letter Monday that defended Texas' right to install the barrier. The letter said the buoy wall "poses a risk to navigation, as well as public safety, in the Rio Grande River, and it presents humanitarian concerns."

Greg Abbott will not be ordering floating barriers to be removed from the Rio Grande, in defiance of the US Department of Justice. The Justice Department gave Texas a deadline of Monday at 2 p.m. ET to commit to the removal of the floating border barriers or face legal action, according to the letter sent to Abbott. The governor’s actions are cruel and putting both migrants and border agents in danger,” White House spokesman Abdullah Hasan said. Among the complaints are reports that Texas troopers were told to push back migrants into the Rio Grande and ordered not to give them water.

The Justice Department filed suit on Monday against the State of Texas over its installation of a floating barrier meant to stop people from swimming across the Rio Grande, arguing that the interlocking buoys placed in the river by the state violated federal law. Greg Abbott of Texas, who heralded the installation of the 1,000-foot barrier this month, refused a request from the Justice Department to remove the buoys voluntarily, vowing instead to fight in court to keep them in place. Mr. Abbott has blamed President Biden for the large numbers of migrants crossing the border illegally. “If you truly care about human life, you must begin enforcing federal immigration laws,” Mr. Abbott wrote in a letter to President Biden on Monday. State police officers have been shouting at migrants to turn back and, in some cases, refusing to provide water to people who request it.

WASHINGTON, July 24 (Reuters) - The U.S. Justice Department on Monday sued Texas over floating barriers installed by the state in the Rio Grande river to block migrants crossing from Mexico. "This floating barrier poses threats to navigation and public safety and presents humanitarian concerns." The lawsuit, filed in the U.S. District Court in the Western District of Texas, seeks "to remove all structures and obstructions, including a floating barrier and all infrastructure related to the floating barrier, in the Rio Grande," according to the court filing. In recent months, National Guard troops have strung up razor wire to block migrants from crossing the Rio Grande. The number of migrants caught crossing the U.S.-Mexico border illegally has dropped since Biden implemented a restrictive new asylum policy in May.

The Department of Justice has warned Texas that its border policies violate federal law. Texas' actions "violate federal law" and "present serious risks to public safety," it said. Of particular concern is a floating barrier that Texas recently placed in the Rio Grande. "This floating barrier poses a risk to navigation, as well as public safety, in the Rio Grande River, and it presents humanitarian concerns," the department said. Texas' actions "violate federal law, raise humanitarian concerns, present serious risks to public safety and the environment, and may interfere with the federal government's ability to carry out its official duties," the department said.

“The department is aware of the troubling reports, and we are working with DHS and other relevant agencies to assess the situation,” DOJ spokeswoman Xochitl Hinojosa told CNN. CNN previously reported that the Department of Homeland Security and Justice Department were in ongoing discussions about what actions could be taken against the state. That suit lists the state of Texas and Abbott, as well as the Texas Department of Public Safety and the Texas National Guard.
