Now, despite a rocky start three years ago, Meta's smart glasses are doing better than expected. Meta's Ray-Bans have a camera and speaker and are packed with AI. Meta's loftier goal, the Orion glasses , aren't quite there. Yet getting people into the Orion glasses may depend on getting people comfortable with smart glasses generally, and that's where the Ray-Bans could come in. And the Meta Ray-Bans make it even easier to use AI as you move through the world — no hands (and awkward air-pinching ) required.

Those officials were clear: The question was not if Israel and Hezbollah would accept the ceasefire proposal, but precisely when. But only hours later, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu would throw cold water on the multi-national proposal. “I can’t speak for Prime Minister Netanyahu, I can’t answer the question why he said what he said,” he told reporters. Secretary of State Antony Blinken met with top Israeli officials in New York Thursday afternoon. Dermer and Israeli Ambassador Michael Herzog demurred when asked by CNN ahead of that meeting if they are going to accept the ceasefire proposal between Israel and Hezbollah.

Hezbollah’s main base is on the Israel-Lebanon border, where the militant group and Israel have seen near-daily clashes since the war in Gaza began. The rise of Hezbollah: As droves of Palestinian fighters left Lebanon, a band of Shia Islamist fighters trained by Iran burst onto the scene. Support for Gaza: Hezbollah is part of a larger Iran-led alliance of militant groups spanning Yemen, Syria, Gaza, and Iraq that has increasingly clashed with Israel and its allies since the war with Hamas started — and has vowed to continue until the war ends. Displaced residents: The increase in cross-border fighting has forced people from their homes in both Israel and Lebanon. On Tuesday, Israel made it a new war objective to return tens of thousands of Israel’s northern residents to their homes near the border.

CNN —The company that built and operated the Titan submersible asked employees to forego their pay as it faced economic challenges, according to former employees testifying before the US Coast Guard panel probing the vessel’s deadly implosion last year. OceanGate employees were asked to “defer our paychecks” at the start of 2023, Amber Bay, the company’s former director of administration, said Tuesday as part of a two-week hearing before the Marine Board of Investigation – the highest level of Coast Guard inquiry. The board is reviewing the cause of the June 2023 implosion during the submersible’s dive to the Titanic, which claimed the life of OceanGate CEO Stockton Rush and four others. Members of the Coast Guard's Titan Submersible Marine Board of Investigation listen during the hearing inside the Charleston County Council Chambers on September 23, 2024, in North Charleston, South Carolina. At risk of collapsing before the year is out, the new lineup will have to do a delicate dance with the far right in order to survive. By pandering to the right, Macron hopes his government can safeguard his legacy after the left pledged to repeal some of his key policies, such as controversial pension reforms. New faces include veteran conservative Bruno Retailleau at the interior ministry whose hardline stance on immigration appeals to the far right. The president – a former left-wing minister – is now beholden to the support of the far right. Yet in this summer’s snap election, they are the very group Macron tried to keep out of government through his party’s “cordon sanitaire” voting alliance with France’s left.

Sovereign wealth funds out of the Middle East are emerging as key backers of Silicon Valley's artificial intelligence darlings. In the past year, funding for AI companies by Middle-Eastern sovereigns has increased fivefold, according to data from Pitchbook. Few venture funds have deep enough pockets to compete with the multibillion-dollar checks coming from the likes of Microsoft and Amazon . MGX was launched as a dedicated AI fund in March, with Abu Dhabi's Mubadala and AI firm G42 as founding partners. For the U.S., having sovereign wealth funds invest in American companies, and not in global adversaries like China, has been a geopolitical priority.

Seconds after that brief communication, the Titan was “pinged” for the last time, according to the opening presentation of the two-week hearing. Days later, authorities found its wreckage on the floor of the North Atlantic Ocean, several hundred yards from the remains of the Titanic, according to the Marine Board of Investigation, which is the highest level of inquiry by the Coast Guard. Lochridge testified he was supposed to pilot the submersible and objected when Rush decided he wanted to pilot the vessel. Rush made multiple errors during the dive, Lochridge said, including ignoring issues with the current and keeping his distance from the wreck. “It just didn’t seem to me that it had been particularly well-thought-out or executed,” he said of the submersible.
