Nicka Sewell-Smith, a professional genealogist with the family history website Ancestry.com, said people frequently ask her what to do with such documents. The top Democrat on the House Foreign Affairs Committee, Meeks said in an interview that he has spent years trying to trace his family history back before 1870.

Analysts expect earnings for S&P 500 companies to fall 5.6% in the second quarter from a year ago, according to IBES data from Refinitiv. Fourth-quarter 2022 earnings for S&P 500 companies declined 3.2%, so a first-quarter profit fall would have been a second straight quarterly decline, which some strategists call an earnings recession. Package delivery firm FedEx (FDX.N) this week posted disappointing quarterly earnings and said waning global demand is pressuring its profit margins. "S&P 500 EPS estimates and stock prices will need to reset lower." The S&P 500 (.SPX) is down about 1% this week, but remains up more than 13% for the year to date.

Union workers missed out on a frenzy of wage increases by employers desperate for workers during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. Low unemployment makes it easier for union workers to stand firm during negotiations. Union workers also want more affordable healthcare, paid sick time and more-flexible scheduling for greater work-life balance. Some workers said the base wage increase was insufficient and balked at higher out-of-pocket medical costs. Late last year, U.S. freight railroad workers rejected a five-year contract that included a 24% wage increase, citing lack of paid sick leave.

All S&P 500 sub-sectors fell, with the rate-sensitive real estate sector (.SPLRCR) leading the declines, with a 0.8% drop. In the previous session, Wall Street's main indexes fell as investors booked profits in the wake of a sustained market rally amid signs of weakening global demand. Still, the benchmark S&P 500 (.SPX) has advanced around 14% so far this year. If a U.S. recession becomes more likely, Goldman Sachs (GS.N) said investors should maintain upside exposure to equities by using options to hedge a potential 23% fall in the S&P 500 index (.SPX). When Western nations imposed sanctions on Russian oil as a result of the unprovoked war in Ukraine, India doubled down on its purchases. Russian oil currently accounts for almost 20% of India's annual crude imports, a significant increase from just 2% in 2021, Reuters reported. The global shipping downturn has hurt margins for the sector and FedEx's challenge is matching costs and capacity to lower demand. Last fiscal year, FedEx slashed 29,000 jobs, retired 18 planes, shuttered offices and pared back profit-sapping Sunday deliveries in a bid to cut $4 billion in permanent costs by the end of its 2025 financial year. For fiscal 2024, FedEx forecast flat to low-single-digit-percent revenue growth versus the prior year. The company said it would buy back $2 million of its common stock in the new fiscal year.
