WASHINGTON — The Supreme Court on Tuesday dealt a setback to former White House chief of staff Mark Meadows in his defense against 2020 election interference charges in Georgia, turning away his attempt to transfer his case from state to federal court. His lawyers argued that the case should be moved because he was acting as a “federal officer” at the time and could therefore argue for immunity from prosecution. Circuit Court of Appeals concluding that because Meadows is no longer a federal official, the provision that would allow the case to be moved to federal court does not apply to him. The appeals court also found that even if he was deemed to be a federal officer, "the events giving rise to this criminal action were not related to Meadows' official duties." Meadows faces two counts in the sprawling Georgia election interference case over his role in efforts to keep Trump in power after he lost the 2020 election.

The Pentagon’s latest public report on China’s military modernization, released in October 2023, noted a naval version of the Z-20 was under development. The exhibition showcases the latest in Chinese military aviation, some seen for the first time in public. He said he expected the Z-20 to soon become the standard naval and anti-submarine helicopter, given its ability to land on ships ranging from corvettes and destroyers to aircraft carriers. Tuesday’s display followed state media reports in May that the Z-20 now had an assault capability and that anti-submarine versions were being developed. In its latest annual assessment of international military deployments, the London-based International Institute for Strategic Studies notes that China has fielded 15 Z-20 helicopters for search and rescue work.

FBI Director Christopher Wray and Donald Trump's team are planning for the possibility that the president-elect will replace Wray during the new administration, three people familiar with the matter told NBC News. Wray, whom Trump appointed in 2017 to a 10-year term, enjoys leading the FBI and had intended to serve out his term, a source said. Wray could resign if he was told Trump wants him gone, as is widely expected. “I assume that’s the best apology that we’ll get from Director Wray, but it is fully accepted!” he wrote. Installing a new FBI director would require confirmation in the Senate, where Republicans will be in the majority starting in January.

They’ve pressed forward even though a majority of Americans still see the Capitol rioters as responsible for an attack against democracy, according to the most recent polling. The most pressing concerns are for convicted rioters required to report to prison before Trump’s inauguration in January, and for rioters with sentencing hearings coming up, according to a source familiar with the discussions. “They’re thrilled with the election, but there’s a lot of uncertainty from their perspective,” the source told CNN. For convicted rioters already serving prison sentences, there’s even less hope to get them out based on Trump’s campaign rhetoric, the source said. She later told CNN that her strategy guide has already been sent to Trump and the Republican National Committee.

Donald Trump meets with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at Mar-a-Lago on July 26, in Palm Beach, Florida. CNN —Donald Trump’s lawyers and the Manhattan district attorney’s office have agreed to delay activity in the hush money case until November 19 to give the president-elect’s lawyers time to make new arguments on how his election victory impacts the case. Judge Juan Merchan was expected to rule Tuesday on whether to overturn the business fraud conviction based on this summer’s Supreme Court ruling on presidential immunity. “The stay, and dismissal, are necessary to avoid unconstitutional impediments to President Trump’s ability to govern,” Bove wrote. The Supreme Court’s immunity decision also indefinitely tied up Trump’s federal election subversion case in Washington, DC. The jury should not have heard any testimony from Hope Hicks about events in 2018 when she was the White House Communications Director, Trump’s lawyers argued.

Boston AP —A federal judge on Tuesday sentenced a Massachusetts Air National Guard member to 15 years in prison after he pleaded guilty to leaking highly classified military documents about the war in Ukraine. Jack Teixeira pleaded guilty earlier this year to six counts of willful retention and transmission of national defense information under the Espionage Act following his arrest in the most consequential national security case in years. He was brought into court in an orange jumpsuit and showed no visible reaction as he was sentenced by US District Judge Indira Talwani. Prosecutors had originally requested a 17-year sentence for Teixeira, saying he “perpetrated one of the most significant and consequential violations of the Espionage Act in American history.”Defense attorneys had sought an 11-year sentence. The security breach raised alarm over the United States’ ability to protect its most closely guarded secrets and forced the Biden administration to scramble to try to contain the diplomatic and military fallout.

Russia's economy faces stress as high interest rates fail to control inflation. Business leaders criticize high rates, warning of potential bankruptcies and an economic slowdown. The data from Rosstat, Russia's federal statistics service, show that food prices have generally risen across the board this year. To tame prices, Russia's central bank has hiked its key interest rate to a record high of 21% last month. High interest rates are irritating business leaders, who are more loudly critiquing the central bank's policies.

Trump didn't specify where cuts will take place or when the department may be formed. The United States announced Tuesday that there will be no significant policy shift towards Israel, at the conclusion of a 30-day U.S. deadline for improvement in humanitarian aid delivery to Gaza. We believe that, had it not been for U.S. intervention, these changes may not have ever taken place," said Patel. The demands and the deadline were laid out in a joint letter from Secretary of State Anthony Blinken and Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin, delivered Oct. 13. If Israel wants to continue to qualify for foreign military financing under U.S. law, Blinken and Austin wrote, at least 350 trucks per day of aid must be allowed to enter the war-ravaged Gaza Strip. The letter also called on Israel to provide heightened security for humanitarian sites, and an increase in the number of humanitarian pauses to its military operations.
