Will Free Beer Make Travelers More Responsible?
  + stars: | 2024-07-30 | by ( Elaine Glusac | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
Earlier this month, when the tourism office of Copenhagen announced it would reward travelers with freebies for taking conscientious actions like using public transportation, proponents of sustainable travel cheered the adoption of a strategy that would encourage responsible behavior. “Tourists want to feel good about doing something sustainable without feeling ashamed,” said Paloma Zapata, the chief executive of Sustainable Travel International, which works with destinations and travel operators to address climate and community impacts. “These programs make sustainable tourism very tangible.”In the carrot-versus-stick debate, punitive policies like charging day visitors a fee in Venice have dominated the conversation. But an emerging set of policies is designed to guide and reward travelers’ good behavior. A new Booking.com survey of 31,000 travelers globally found that while 75 percent of travelers want to travel more sustainably in the next year, 45 percent admitted it was not a primary consideration when planning a trip.

Electric Cars Help the Climate. But Are They Good Value?
  + stars: | 2024-07-29 | by ( Jack Ewing | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
Electric vehicles cost more to buy than gasoline cars, and they may lose value more quickly. And because electric vehicles are a new technology, there is less certainty than for gasoline-powered vehicles about how the numbers will shake out over time. Most electric cars haven’t been on the road that long, so it’s hard to say definitively how long batteries will remain usable. Lithium-ion batteries, the kind used in virtually all electric vehicles, do lose range over time. Electric cars from Tesla and other automakers have software that does a good job of protecting batteries from excess heat or voltage that can cause damage, especially when charging.

Third-party food delivery is becoming the norm for American consumers, as delivery apps like Grubhub, DoorDash and Uber Eats take hold in day-to-day dining. It's also presenting customers and restaurants with an increasingly complicated equation of service fees, delivery costs and worker tips. San Francisco resident Zainab Batool, who said she orders delivery from either Uber Eats or DoorDash weekly, called the added fees "insane." The share of consumers choosing third-party delivery services over direct restaurant delivery is rising, up from 15% in 2020 to 21% in 2024, according to Technomic's 2024 Delivery & Takeout Consumer Trend Report. But using their delivery services instead of paying for in-house delivery is worth it for a business on the smaller side, he said.

Why do women’s haircuts cost more than men’s?
  + stars: | 2024-07-27 | by ( Anna Cooban | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +7 min
Last year, the average cost for a standard women’s haircut was $51.71 compared with $34.56 for a men’s haircut across the United States, according to transaction data provided exclusively to CNN by Square, a payment systems provider. A man gets his hair cut in a barber shop in Colchester, United Kingdom. That report found the average cost of a women’s haircut ranging between $45 and $75 across the country, while men’s toggled between $25 and $50, though it did not specify whether the typical women’s haircut included extra services such as a blow dry. “When you go to cosmetology school to become a hair stylist, you learn to how to cut hair,” they told CNN. Goldie x Bob is one such hair salon that, five years ago, threw out its gender-based price list.

Since Harris kicked off her presidential campaign, there’s been a string of good news for the US economy. Harris will have Biden’s mostly strong economy to run on. By June 2021, Biden’s sixth month in office, the nation’s inflation rate jumped to more than 5%. After the Federal Reserve hiked interest rate hikes to a 23-year high to stamp out inflation, the economy — eventually — started to run at a slower pace. Federal prosecutors and securities regulators filed criminal and civil fraud charges against a well-known investor who frequently appeared on cable TV business shows to discuss his often bearish views on stocks, the authorities said on Friday. They accused the investor, Andrew Left, of raking in at least $16 million in illegal profits from a multiyear scheme to manipulate market prices of roughly two dozen stocks on which his firm, Citron Research, had published reports. He is charged with illegally profiting through stock trades he made that were contrary to the public recommendations he was making to investors. The authorities in Los Angeles said Mr. Left essentially used a bait-and-switch strategy that was at odds with his Wall Street reputation of being a vocal short seller, with supposedly long-held negative views of the stocks on which he published critical reports. The charging documents said Mr. Left, 54, used his high profile on Wall Street to make quick profits from big price changes in a stock and misled investors by making them believe his economic interests were aligned with what he said in his reports.

London CNN —The head of one of the world’s biggest hedge funds says artificial intelligence systems are unlikely to replace traders anytime soon. London-based Man Group, whose assets under management hit an all-time high of $178.2 billion during the first six months of the year, makes its money by charging investors management and performance fees. “I don’t think of AI as making investment decisions anytime soon,” Grew said. In the interview with CNN, Grew said the era of rock-bottom interest rates that broadly defined the decade following the 2008 financial crisis had made way for a period of “volatility and dispersion” ushered in by the rise in inflation after the pandemic. In other words, traders navigating a volatile market can expect to make a greater range of — and possibly bigger — returns across various assets than during more stable times.

Tokyo CNN —Kudos to you if you can speak perfect Japanese and order food at a neighborhood sushi bar in Tokyo. But overtourism – fueled by a combination of pent-up post-Covid demands (aka “revenge travel”) and the weak local currency – has recently prompted restaurants in the country to consider the merits of differential pricing. This year, spurred by a weak yen that has fallen to its lowest level against the dollar in decades, the tourists are back - in big numbers. “Some people say, ‘We don’t do this in our country.’ But think about how bad Japanese people’s English skills are. As the less-expensive resident prices are often written in the local language, foreign tourists may not even know they paid more.

Many U.S. EV owners, in particular, are having second thoughts. EV adoption has slowed in the U.S., even as the recent earnings and delivery reports from both GM and Ford showed sizable increases in EV sales. Ford said EV sales were up 60%, to nearly 24,000 units, but CEO Jim Farley described a "more realistic and sharpened" EV plan during its earnings call. Drury said that some distinctions are becoming clear between all EV owners and those who are most satisfied. As battery range and density increase, and EV charging infrastructure improves, and prices continue down, Brauer said the picture should brighten for EV sales.
