Wells Fargo CEO calls consumers 'extremely resilient'

Wells Fargo CEO Charlie Scharf gave CNBC's Jim Cramer a positive read on the consumer landscape. "We don't sit here and say risks don't exist — But what we see looks pretty, pretty strong." Wells Fargo's most recent quarter topped Wall Street's expectations, and shares surged more than 4% last Friday just after the report. By Tuesday's close, Wells Fargo was up 1.40%. While Scharf said Wells Fargo does care about its quarterly results, he suggested the market can obsess over reports more than management does.

A doctor shortage is projected to hit 86,000 by 2036. According to the Rural Medical Training Collaborative, 133 rural residencies in family medicine and 69 rural-track programs are recruiting for 2025 enrollment, along with 30 internal-medicine residencies and 16 psychiatry residencies. Several pieces of legislation have also been introduced to Congress to address the doctor shortage. For example, HR 7855, the Association of American Medical Colleges-endorsed Rural Residency Planning and Development Act of 2024, would codify the Rural Residency Planning and Development Program, which funds the startup costs of residency training in rural areas, Dill said. From 2019 to 2024, the program has enabled the launch of 46 accredited rural residency programs across 38 states and Puerto Rico.

Walgreens to close 1,200 stores in the US over the next three years. AdvertisementUS pharmacy giant Walgreens announced Tuesday that it will close 1,200 stores across the US over the next three years as part of its turnaround effort; 500 locations will close next year. CEO Tim Wentworth told analysts on the firm's quarterly earnings call in June that "changes are imminent" for the 25% of Walgreens stores that were underperforming. The news of 1,200 closures came as the firm announced its fourth-quarter and full-year results for fiscal 2024, reporting a $3 billion loss during the quarter. Along with closing unprofitable stores, the pharmacy chain is also dialing back investments in its primary care clinics — VillageMD — as part of its plan to cut costs.

Israel is facing an interceptor missile shortage, sources told the Financial Times. The head of an Israeli manufacturer of interceptor missiles said its production lines are working 24/7. Stroul also noted that the US is reaching a "tipping point," and may struggle to keep supplying Ukraine and Israel with interceptor missiles at the current pace. According to estimates, the Iron Dome's "Tamir" interceptor missiles cost about $50,000 each.

The power needs of data centers will temporarily prolong the demand for coal, maintaining the reliability of the electric grid but delaying the nation's decarbonization goals, according to Moody's Ratings. The electricity demand from data centers could more than double to 35 gigawatts by 2030 compared to 17 gigawatts in 2022, according to a Moody's report published Monday. "It can be cost effective for them to supply coal to those power plants, and those power plants can, in turn, meet the incremental demand coming in from the new data centers," Sama said. The benefit to U.S. coal producers, however, will be temporary as data center developers transition to cleaner sources of power, according to Moody's. But sustained coal demand in the U.S. due to data centers could briefly lift prices before coal resumes its decline after a few years, according to Moody's.

Why a 'no landing' scenario may take place after all
  + stars: | 2024-10-15 | by ( Sean Conlon | ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +2 min
A soft landing occurs when economic growth slows just enough to bring down inflation below the Federal Reserve's 2% target without tipping the economy into a recession. She thinks the economy is experiencing a no-landing scenario as it continues to expand without slowing down. "So far, clearly bank earnings are coming in better than expected, both top line and bottom line. "The other thing that that's showing [is] that our call for the 'no landing' is actually playing out." It's not just bank earnings that point to solid economic growth.

Those working-class White women loom as a critical, potentially even decisive, factor in Trump’s third White House bid. But while White women with a college degree have trended toward the Democrats in the presidential campaigns since then, the White women without a college degree have moved sharply in the opposite direction. She acknowledges that Trump’s alarms have resonated among working-class White women, especially older ones. Not only college-educated White women, but also the equivalent White men were much more likely than the blue-collar White women to express positive views about Harris and negative ones about Trump, Gallup found. “I think there is a lot of implicit [gender] bias with” these working-class White women, Lake said.

We're about to enter the Digital Dark Ages

Without laborious renaming, everything behind those links — billions of them, a decade of digital content — will become inaccessible. We're about to enter the Digital Dark Ages. The Department of Veterans Affairs is legally required to preserve all medical records for 75 years after the death of a vet — but it's having problems, in part because of a balky digital records system. "Over the long term, you can't preserve a digital object in its original form," says Manoff, the former MIT librarian. The Dark Ages, as historians used to call the early centuries of medieval Europe, lasted for 500 years.

Tokyo Metro is expected to raise 348.6 billion yen ($2.3 billion) after pricing its initial public offering at the top end of its range, according to two sources familiar with the matter, in the largest IPO in Japan for six years. One of Tokyo's two major subway operators, the company is set to announce the pricing later on Tuesday and list on the Tokyo Stock Exchange on Oct. 23. The price gives Tokyo Metro a dividend yield of 3.3% based on its forecast dividend of 40 yen per share for the financial year ending March 2025. "That stands out compared to other private and JR railways," said Kazumi Tanaka, an analyst at DZH Financial Research. The central government, which owns 53.4% of Tokyo Metro, and the Tokyo government, which holds the remaining 46.6%, are selling half of their shares in the IPO.

A National Geographic documentary crew may have found partial remains of the foot of Andrew “Sandy” Irvine, the famed mountaineer who disappeared on Mount Everest 100 years ago. The climbers were trekking Everest in late September when they spotted a disembodied foot inside of a boot that appeared perfectly preserved yet undeniably old. It is not known whether the pair ever reached the summit — an important Everest mystery among climbers and historians alike. Fisher’s documentary team, which included photographer and director Jimmy Chin and filmmaker Erich Roepke, came across the boot while exploring the Central Rongbuk Glacier on the northern side of Mount Everest. “We haven’t done DNA tests yet, so we can’t 100% say with certainty that this is indeed Irvine’s boot, but like I said, the nameplate is perfectly stitched on there.

The Israeli military has launched a series of deadly strikes in the Gaza Strip over the past 24 hours, including on a flour distribution center, a school and a hospital where displaced Palestinians were sheltering. Video of a fire at a tent camp Sunday that started after Israeli forces launched an airstrike on Al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital in central Gaza's Deir al-Balah showed harrowing scenes. In multiple videos shared on social media and verified by NBC News, at least one person could be seen reaching their hands out from the flames as they were burned alive. Others could be seen racing from the fire, some carrying the injured, while others ran toward the blaze to help. Three U.S.-based academics won the 2024 Nobel economics prize on Monday for their research into why global inequality persists, especially in countries dogged by corruption and dictatorship. The laureates have demonstrated the importance of societal institutions for achieving this,” said Jakob Svensson, Chair of the Committee for the Prize in Economic Sciences. Last year, Harvard economic historian Claudia Goldin won the prize for her work highlighting the causes of wage and labour market inequality between men and women. In 2019, economists Abhijit Banerjee, Esther Duflo and Michael Kremer won the award for work on fighting poverty. The economics prize has been dominated by U.S. academics since its inception, while U.S.-based researchers also tend to account for a large portion of winners in the scientific fields for which 2024 laureates were announced last week.
