While the rest of America is celebrating, I'm reliving the day my brother drowned, the day my family went from eight kids to seven. My brother Dave and I drove up together on July 3. Janet Funk and her oldest brother, Paul. Paul, Dave, and Tom jumped up and followed him. They were halfway there when Robbie went under.

And if you're not going to do a job, don't do a job." AdvertisementThe next summer, I got a product management internship at a startup called Travelnuts, which I liked. At a certain point, maybe I'll plateau or stop progressing, and I'll have to choose to stop because I'm just not good enough. I'm 29 now, so the idea that in about five years, I'm supposed to roughly know my trajectory kind of haunts me. I'm pretty confident in my comedy, so I'm full speed ahead on being a comedian.

Even if you don’t know Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony, you probably know its finale, the famous “Ode to Joy.”Written 200 years ago, the “Ode” is crafted like the best of pop songs, with easily hummable, simple phrases that use the same techniques you hear in a Taylor Swift hit today. But the “Ode” is more than pop. It’s a supranational anthem that aspires to a world in which “all men become brothers,” as its lyrics say. Since its premiere, the “Ode” has become shorthand for unity and hope, whether sincere or ironic. Sunny lyrics like “Be embraced, oh you millions!” and “Here’s a kiss for the entire world” have made it a fixture of the Olympics.

America has a serious ugly home problem

Recently she posted a video on her YouTube channel in which she phrased the question more bluntly: "Why are homes so 'ugly' now?" Most people agree that America needs more houses, but nobody seems all that thrilled with the ones being built. Related storiesThe blame for America's architectural nightmare, however, doesn't stop at production builders, rising costs, or local codes. Homes look this way because they're not just places where we live — they're also supposed to help us get rich. As they stare down these rising costs, builders and architects have almost no choice but to streamline or opt for cheaper design elements.

How Steve Bannon Sees the Future - The New York Times
  + stars: | 2024-07-01 | by ( David Brooks | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +2 min
I was sitting in Steve Bannon’s Washington living room in 2019. By then populists had already racked up some big wins — Brexit in Britain, Trump’s victory in 2016. Bannon knew I opposed him in every particular and abhorred much of what he said, but he laid out his grand vision cheerfully, confidently. I found Bannon, currently the host of the podcast “War Room,” to be embroiled and embattled as usual. I should emphasize that I wasn’t trying to debate Bannon or rebut his beliefs; I wanted to understand how he sees the current moment.

Kyiv, Ukraine CNN —World Athletics President Sebastian Coe said he invited Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to the Olympics as his personal guest during a surprise visit to Kyiv on Friday. But he’s at odds with the IOC when it comes to their stance on Russian athletes. Following Moscow’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine – supported by Belarus – in February 2022, World Athletics is the only Olympic sports federation to have banned all Russian and Belarussian athletes from elite competition. In the meeting with the Ukrainian president, World Athletics committed to keep providing financial support for the country’s athletes. Coe also stopped by the Ukrainian Athletics Championships in Lviv, the event that determined which athletes will compete in the Olympics.

Basic income programs are the next victim, now on Fox. "Universal Basic Guys" stars a pair of brothers who join a $3,000-a-month basic income program after the hot dog factory where they work becomes automated. A universal basic income is often cited as a potential solution to the likely job losses created by artificial intelligence. A universal basic income would give monthly no-strings-attached cash payments to everyone, regardless of their financial status. While more cities are experimenting with basic income programs, they have also been the target of conservative ire.

In my career, I've spent the last 12 years studying how the most successful, effective, and influential people speak. Over time, I noticed that there was a missing factor in our models that could make or break these deals: effective communication. Here are three communication strategies the most visionary leaders use. They use clear and simple languageWhen visionaries speak, they aren't overly complex or theoretical. Another visionary example I love comes from Nelson Mandela, who famously said "education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world."

CNN —U.S. Soccer said it was “deeply disturbed” by the racist abuse directed at two of the men’s national team’s players following it’s surprise 2-1 defeat by Panama at the 2024 Copa América in Atlanta on Thursday. Defender Chris Richards and striker Folarin Balogun posted on their Instagram stories the racist messages they had received over the social media platform. Just inside the door to the studio of the Brazilian artists Osgemeos is a self-portrait. Spray painted onto the concrete wall of the old metal workshop’s entryway, the image shows the identical twins Otávio and Gustavo Pandolfo, 50, standing next to each other, hands at their sides and looking forward. They’re wearing colorful printed clothing, bags slung over their shoulders and baseball caps propped on their heads. Here, preparations are underway for “Endless Story,” their first museum survey of work in the United States. One of the brothers’ imposing sculptures, wrapped in black plastic so it can be shipped for the exhibition, hangs from chains on the sweeping ceiling and another is tucked away in a corner, a smidgen of what looks like a subway car visible.

A police officer in a Seattle suburb was found guilty on Thursday in the 2019 shooting death of a man outside a convenience store, the first such conviction under a Washington State law making it easier to hold the police accountable for the unjustified use of deadly force. A jury found the officer, Jeffrey Nelson, guilty of second-degree murder and first-degree assault for the killing of Jesse Sarey, 26, during an arrest on a disorderly-conduct charge outside Sunshine Grocery in Auburn, Wash., on May 31, 2019. Mr. Sarey’s mother, Kari Sarey Hart, and his younger brother, Torell Sarey, died as the case wound its way through the legal system, said Elaine Simons, 64, who was a foster mother to the brothers. Mr. Sarey’s mother and family fled Cambodia during the Khmer Rouge regime. “Neither of them got to be here today, except spiritually, for this kind of justice,” she said of Mr. Sarey’s mother and brother.

Who Was Harriet Tubman? A Historian Sifts the Clues.
  + stars: | 2024-06-26 | by ( Jennifer Szalai | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +2 min
“Where others saw shut doors and unscalable brick walls, she dreamed into being tunnels and ladders,” the historian Tiya Miles writes in “Night Flyer,” a short biography of Tubman that is the first in a new series, called Significations and edited by Henry Louis Gates Jr., about notable Black figures. For decades after her death in 1913, Tubman’s extraordinary life was mostly relegated to books for children and young adults. Thorough, probing biographies by the historians Catherine Clinton and Kate Clifford Larson were published two decades ago. More recently, Tubman was the subject of a Hollywood biopic and “She Came to Slay,” an illustrated volume by the historian Erica Armstrong Dunbar, featuring a drawing of a pistol-toting Tubman on the cover. Perhaps inevitably, all the pop-cultural attention has been double-edged, commemorating Tubman’s formidable accomplishments while also making it harder to discern who she actually was.

At least 11 Americans were among those who died while making the Islamic pilgrimage of hajj to Saudi Arabia this month in searing temperatures, the U.S. State Department said on Tuesday, adding that it was possible that more deaths could be confirmed in the coming days. The daughter, Saida Wurie, said she and her brothers had not yet been told where their parents, Isatu and Alieu Wurie, had been buried. She says she plans to travel to Saudi Arabia as soon as she learns where they are. “Losing a loved one is hard,” she said on Tuesday. “But then not being able to bury them is just an indescribable feeling.”
