New York CNN —Beyoncé was crowned “queen of the box office” after her concert movie topped the box office in its opening weekend. “Renaissance: A Film by Beyoncé,” a documentary about the artist’s record-breaking world tour, raked in $21 million since its Friday opening, according to BoxOfficeMojo. “The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes” placed second, grossing $14.5 million and “Godzilla Minus One” debuted with an $11 million opening. Notably, “Renaissance” became the first film in two decades to cross the $20 million benchmark for its opening weekend following Thanksgiving, a typically sluggish one. REUTERS/Mario Anzuoni/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsDec 4 (Reuters) - "Renaissance: A Film by Beyonce" premiered at the top of the U.S. box office, raking in $21.8 million during the typically anemic first weekend of December, according to research firm Comscore. Beyonce Knowles' concert film marked the first time a movie crossed the $20 million mark on this weekend since the 2003 movie "The Last Samurai" starring Tom Cruise, Comscore said. Live Nation reported that the superstar’s 56-stop Renaissance World Tour earned more than $579 million worldwide - a hot ticket that economists say may have fanned inflation in Europe. In addition to the concert scenes, the film gave a rare glimpse at how Beyonce grapples with stardom and motherhood. Although "Renaissance's" box office fell short of Swift's $96 million opening weekend, Comscore's Dergarabedian said the result will likely be the same.

I love the Black church and admire its noble commitment to moral ardor and social justice. But too often it has slacked on love and compassion for queer folk. So, for Black queers, Beyoncé’s stadium has become a sanctuary. But Beyoncé’s attitude suggests a seismic shift, by explicitly embracing the forces that have previously only secretly shaped the Black religious sensibility. In a way, Beyoncé is what we call a process theologian: a theologian who believes that becoming takes priority over being and that temporal processes influence our understanding of God.

“I’m excited for people to see the show,” Beyoncé says early in “Renaissance: A Film by Beyoncé,” based on her recent world tour and seventh studio album. “But I’m really excited for everyone to see the process.”I’ve long wanted to understand her process better, too, especially because she has taken to rarely giving interviews. Instead she has let her art speak for itself, a risky venture when critics do the interpreting without her input. If “Renaissance” was only a film about her beaming audience, dazzling performances and the making of the tour, that would be more than enough. However, it’s clear early on that Beyoncé is not entirely interested in fetishizing her “process” to validate her artistry.

When Blue Ivy Carter made her on-stage performance debut during her mother Beyoncé's Renaissance World Tour in May, the accomplishment didn't come without controversy. "There [were] lots of negative things that people had to say," Carter, 11, said during "Renaissance: A Film by Beyoncé," a documentary and concert film released on Friday. Joining her mom's tour was already a one-time deal — a reward for practicing her dancing and showing her commitment to building a work ethic, Beyoncé said. The film cut directly to the tour's final show in Kansas City, Missouri, where Carter joined Beyoncé on stage again, seemingly more confident and comfortable this time around. "I feel so honored to be on stage with you," Beyoncé told her daughter, in the documentary.

“Her music is unapologetically, boundlessly and globally Black,” Thomas said. In many cases, lighter skinned slaves were the product of sexual violence by White men against enslaved Black women. Lighter skinned Black women were often deemed “redbones,” a term that for some undermined their Black heritage by implying that the women were mixed non-Black ancestry. A 2023 survey by nonprofit Catalyst found women with darker skin tones were more likely to experience workplace racism than women with lighter skin. “I also get to be critical of Beyoncé,” Thomas said.
