AdvertisementRich Americans want their mansions to stay in the family without causing sibling strife. Even among rich heirs, passing on real estate without proper planning can lead to sibling strife. Instead of leaving thorny questions up to the kids, parents can control how the property will be managed after they die. When equal isn't equitableParents often assume their adult children will share the property equally after they pass, Ludman said. While Ludman encourages allowing the heirs some control, it's important to have a decision-maker in case the siblings reach a stalemate.

The higher rate of side gigs among remote workers, though small, could also stem from some evidence that productivity slows when workers are pushed to return to the office. Stanford economists found 10% lower productivity for fully remote work compared to fully in-person work. Some remote workers told BI they drive for Uber or DoorDash while working as accountants or analysts. AdvertisementBI has also reported on dozens of "overemployed" remote workers who secretly work multiple jobs to earn six-figure incomes. Many said they don't feel guilt for working multiple remote positions, even as remote roles become scarcer and harder to get.

Credit and debit card fees were always a big business expense for Patti Riordan, who owns a hobby shop in Lancaster, Ohio. Now, so-called swipe fees are her third biggest expense, behind payroll and rent, amounting to roughly $18,000 a year. “There is no room to pay more — we’re just operating so thin,” Ms. Riordan said. Debit and credit card fees are among the top monthly expenses for many small businesses, which say the costs are becoming more onerous as fewer consumers carry cash. When they swipe a credit card, businesses pay fees to the bank that issues the card, to the payment network and, often, to companies like Toast and Square that help process the transaction.

Ukraine's navy has revealed a fresh paint job on some of its vessels, which appear to have adopted a World War I-era tactic of using dazzle camouflage. The Ukrainian navy shared the images on social media on Thursday, showing versions of the paintwork. The boats were pictured taking part in a demonstration for naval experts from Denmark, which is cooperating with Ukraine on various naval issues, Ukraine's navy said. Dazzle camouflage first emerged in World War I as a means to confuse enemy submarines and reduce their ability to effectively aim torpedoes. Ukraine's navy has no large ships on active duty and consists mainly of small vessels, like those seen in the recent images.

Elon Musk is asking a federal court to stop OpenAI from converting into a fully for-profit business. Attorneys representing Musk, his AI startup xAI, and former OpenAI board member Shivon Zilis filed for a preliminary injunction against OpenAI on Friday. The injunction would also stop OpenAI from allegedly requiring its investors to refrain from funding competitors, including xAI and others. Musk had originally sued OpenAI in March 2024 in a San Francisco state court, before withdrawing that complaint and refiling several months later in federal court. Thrive Capital led the financing while investors, including Microsoft and Nvidia, also participated.

Those who threw in the towel might be licking their wounds as growth stocks continue to outperform value dramatically. Instead, it builds a simple filter based on backtested factors dating decades to determine the key variables that have worked over time, says Ryan Kelley, CIO of the fund. For the Hennessy Cornerstone Mid Cap 30 Fund, that filter has been boiled down to a four-step process used for 21 years. "We absolutely just let the numbers dictate what we own, and it takes some discipline and it takes some trust in the process," Kelley said. By the time the filter process is complete, thousands of US stocks have been filtered down to about 125 to 150, which is still too much.
