Strong earnings, or rate cuts? Instead of worrying about weak earnings growth and persistently high interest rates, investors are now counting on the opposite. Markets should cut their expectations by half and prepare for mid-single-digit profit growth and three to four rate cuts, Doll said. At that point, a flurry of rate cuts from the Fed wouldn't be enough to save stocks, the Crossmark CIO said. However, there are two mega-cap growth stocks that Doll is enamored with: Meta Platforms ( META ) and Microsoft ( MSFT ).

The activist investor has built a roughly 13% position in the stock, a person familiar with the matter told CNBC. The position would make it Etsy's largest investor. Ether is ready to take the limelight in the month ahead after bitcoin and newly-launched bitcoin ETFs dominated crypto investor attention in January. Both bitcoin and ether are on pace to finish the month higher by nearly 2%, according to Coin Metrics. As investors came to expect slow, steady flows into bitcoin through newly institutionalized ETFs in coming months, ether and altcoins have been ready for a breakout. February is a historically strong month for both bitcoin and ether. The SEC is due to give decisions on spot ETH ETF applications beginning in May.

Quadir told CNBC she has a short position in the stock, meaning she is betting that the share price will decline. "We believe that Adtalem is completely uninvestable, the number of existential risks that exists today should cause alarm for any investor that's looking into this company," Quadir said. In 2017, DeVry Education changed its DV ticker symbol to Adtalem's current ATGE, completing the rebranding of DeVry into Adtalem. Quadir's report found that among Adtalem's properties, the online college Walden University has a graduation rate of just 29%. So far in 2024, for example, big technology firms including Amazon, eBay, Google and Microsoft have announced job cuts. BlackRock, the world's largest asset manager, on Monday upgraded its outlook for U.S. stocks to overweight, seeing upward momentum carry on as inflation eases. "So we upgrade broad U.S. stocks — our index level view plus AI theme preference — to overweight on a tactical horizon of six to 12 months." While the firm sees inflation falling near the Fed's 2% target, it expects prices to go up toward 3% next year. "We agree with markets that inflation will fall near 2% this year, helping the upward momentum extend into the year. The firm said wage growth in the U.S. is still running too hot for services inflation to slow enough to keep core inflation near 2%.

Among the most broadly played investment "factors" — including value, momentum, low volatility, dividend yield — quality has dominated the market, the representative iShares MSCI USA Quality ETF (QUAL) up 25% in the past year, compared to 13% for S & P 500 value and less than 5% for the equal-weighted S & P 500. Even within industry sectors, the stocks with higher quality scores have sped ahead ( Costco in retail, WW Grainger in industrials, etc.). The quality label is based on strong balance sheets, high and steady profit margins, consistency of earnings growth and the like. Sure, there are multi-year secular growth stories animating the AI innovators and weight-loss-drug developers, but most quality stocks stand out for steadiness. Any give-back of the leading quality growth names wouldn't be easily absorbed by the broader market.

BondBloxx is set to debut three new funds on Thursday: BBB Rated 1-5 Year Corporate Bond ETF (BBBS) , BBB Rated 5-10 Year Corporate Bond ETF (BBBI) and BBB Rated 10+ Year Corporate Bond ETF (BBBL). Bonds rated BBB or an equivalent are considered the last rung of investment grade credit. Tony Kelly, co-founder of BondBloxx, said BBB credit is the "not-so-secret sauce" for active managers trying to beat credit benchmarks. Of course, economic downturns are always a concern for corporate credit. This is not unusual for corporate bond funds since banks and other financial institutions issue a lot of short-term debt, but it does suggest that the funds could have some concentration risk.

There’s plenty for investors to celebrate right now, but a look under the hood reveals quite a bit of decay. But it’s largely Big Tech that’s driving markets higher, and that concentration of gains in so few stocks carries inherent risk. But investors are adjusting expectations: Investors eventually get used to strong data, and come to expect it. “It’s hard for data to keep surprising in the same direction, since investors simply adjust their expectations,” said Allen. Just one month ago, more than 75% of investors thought the central bank would cut rates at their March meeting.

New York CNN —EquiLend, a Wall Street firm that processes trillions of dollars of securities transactions a month, was hit by a cyberattack that has knocked some of its systems offline, the company said Wednesday. The financial technology firm, owned by Goldman Sachs, JPMorgan and other major Wall Street firms, said in a statement to CNN that it could take “several days” before services are fully restored. “We immediately launched an investigation and have identified a cyber security incident involving unauthorized access to our systems,” Gohlke said. EquiLend, owned by a consortium of Wall Street firms including BlackRock and Bank of America, is a significant player in the securities-lending industry through its NGT trading platform. In a sea of income-generating exchange-traded funds, BlackRock 's actively managed Flexible Income ETF (BINC) seeks to stand out with a multisector approach that balances high quality and high yield. "The way we built this portfolio is marrying high yield, investment-grade credit, agency mortgages and securitized [products]," Rieder said in an interview. Rieder said he's investing more in European high yield these days because of the strong U.S. dollar. "That is really attractive — and European high yield is cheaper than U.S.," he said. In U.S. high yield, single-B-rated debt is the most attractive, the investor said.

But geopolitical tensions are growing and Wall Street appears to be underestimating their potential impact on the global economy and markets. The United States and China are squabbling about trade, particularly high-powered AI chips that both believe carry consequences for national security. Less trade could mean lower supplies to meet demand — and that could be bad news for inflation around the world. Bank of America also gave geopolitical risk a top spot on its list of surprises that could affect markets in 2024. It’s the worst start to a year for Chinese stocks since 2016, when investors were ditching their holdings following a market crash in 2015.

Bitcoin extended its recent declines on Tuesday, falling further below $40,000 to its lowest level since the beginning of December. Some have pointed to short-term selling pressure from exits from the Grayscale Bitcoin Trust (GBTC), which has seen about $2 billion in outflows since Jan. 19 while BlackRock's iShares Bitcoin Trust and Fidelity's Wise Origin Bitcoin Fund have each seen more than $1 billion in inflow. Expectations around the event emerged last summer intensified in August, pushing the bitcoin price steadily higher. The move in bitcoin continued to pull the rest of the crypto market lower. Microstrategy , which has long traded as a proxy for the bitcoin price, lost 3%, while the biggest miners, Marathon Digital and Riot Platforms , fell 3% and 4%, respectively.

Inflation measures how fast prices are rising for goods and services — anything from concert tickets and haircuts to groceries and furniture. That means further broad disinflation likely won't come from consumer goods, economists said. In fact, attacks by Houthi rebels on ships in the Red Sea threaten to disrupt a key transit corridor and may trigger higher goods inflation if it persists, El-Erian explained. While down from more than 7% last year, services inflation still sits at 5.3%. Why this may all be 'nonsense'Not all economists think the last mile of disinflation will be harder than what came before, however.
