Iya Forbes | Bloomberg | Getty ImagesInflation in consumer goods will persist as a "new normal" as the global economy undergoes structural changes, Asian business leaders warn. While rising interest rates might eventually temper asset prices, deglobalization and decarbonization could continue to drive up costs for everyday goods, said V. Shankar, chief executive of emerging markets investment manager Gateway Partners. "Despite helicopter money and zero interest rates, the reason why the price of goods stayed down for so long is because of a vast efficient manufacturing agent called China, and the integration of global supply chains." Ho Kwon Ping, executive chairman of Singapore's multinational hospitality group Banyan Tree Holdings agreed, saying higher interest rates are not the new normal, rather, zero or low interest rates were "abnormal." "The world is going, in my view, back to probably a long-term situation of low interest rates, and hopefully, low inflation, but zero inflation, zero interest rates, that's the abnormality, and not the future that we're looking at."
CNN —A monoclonal antibody treatment for Alzheimer’s disease called lecanemab slows the progression of cognitive decline by 27% compared with a placebo, drugmakers Biogen and Eisai said Tuesday. Alzheimer’s is a very heterogeneous disease.”But he says that does not diminish the potential significance of the trial. “In the past, reducing amyloid in the brain has not always been tied to cognitive improvements or any meaningful clinical improvements. Biogen is also the company behind another Alzheimer’s drug, Aduhelm, which was controversially approved by the FDA in June 2021. Aduhelm was the first new Alzheimer’s drug approved in nearly 20 years, but there were questions about its efficacy and cost.
Doctors are urging more research into a little-known sexually transmitted infection that may be more common than thought. However, it wasn't until 2019 that the first Food and Drug Administration-approved test for M. gen. became commercially available. Similar to chlamydia and gonorrhea, M. gen. is sometimes asymptomatic, but it may lead to severe complications in both men and women. In women, M. gen. is associated with cervical swelling, pelvic inflammatory disease, miscarriage, preterm birth, and infertility. However, more research is needed to determine the longterm risks from M. gen infection, experts said.
Hurricane Fiona hammered Bermuda with heavy rains early Friday as the now-Category 3 storm marched toward northeastern Canada. The center of the storm was passing northwest of Bermuda by Friday morning with maximum sustained winds nearing 125 mph, with higher gusts, the U.S. National Hurricane Center said. The storm was downgraded from a Category 4 hurricane as it made its way past the island, it said. The hurricane center said the severe winds and rain expected to come with Fiona would have "major impacts" for eastern Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, western Newfoundland, eastern Quebec and southeastern Labrador. The hurricane center also warned of the possibility of downed trees and power outages, noting that "most regions will experience hurricane force winds."
Some real-estate developers are increasingly targeting offices and hotels for conversion into apartments because, they say, these projects are the only ones that make financial sense right now. The company spent a total of $14.2 million to acquire the properties, which Hubbard described as "on the run-down side." With conversions, developers are also hoping to capitalize on the increased demand for rentals as buying a home becomes less affordable. By extension, the value of office space is declining — making conversion projects more profitable when financing can be secured. The program includes zoning reforms designed to make the conversion projects easier and funding from the federal American Rescue Plan, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported.
Cancerous tumours are not the body’s attempt to heal itself, as has been claimed online. According to Cancer Research UK (here), cancer cells survive by sending out signals that encourage new blood vessels to grow into the tumour so it too can grow. The charity also reports that there were 9.6 million deaths from cancer worldwide in 2018 (here) and 167,142 deaths in the U.K. between 2017 and 2019 (here). Additionally, not all cancers form solid tumours, according to the U.S. National Cancer Institute (here), e.g., cancers of the blood, such as leukemias. Cancerous tumours are not the body’s process of trying to heal itself.
It was 1988, and he'd approached President Ronald Reagan in the Cabinet room at the White House. People scoffed at the glowing hourlong media conference that President Donald Trump's White House doctor gave about his health. Reagan publicly announced he had Alzheimer's disease five years after he left the White House. Francis Shen, who teaches psychiatry at Harvard Medical School's Center for Bioethics, would like to see information about political leaders' cognitive health made public. Cognitive health should be no different, he said, because it also might affect the way presidents and members of Congress make important decisions.
George Conway said "any fair jury" would convict Trump over his handling of classified documents. "The one way he had out of this was to basically turn the documents over a year ago," Conway said. "I think it's going to be very difficult for the Justice Department to decline prosecuting him," Conway said. "I think before any fair jury, he'd have to be convicted based upon what we're seeing. When Jong-Fast asked what a "good lawyer" could do for Trump, Conway replied: "Nothing."
UN report on China’s Uyghurs: What you need to know
  + stars: | 2022-09-01 | by ( Jessie Yeung | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +7 min
CNN —Just minutes before the end of her term on Wednesday, the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights dropped a damning report on China’s treatment of Uyghurs and other Muslim minorities. China has repeatedly and vehemently denied accusations of human rights abuses in the region, and decried the UN report on Wednesday as “based on the disinformation and lies fabricated by anti-China forces.”Here’s what you need to know. The 45-page report was the final offering from Michelle Bachelet, the head of the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), whose term ended at midnight Geneva time. China responded to the report with its own 131-page document, saying the UN’s investigation “distorts” China’s laws and policies. However, activists and overseas Uyghurs have welcomed the report as a symbolic step and a new level of recognition by the UN of the human rights violations alleged in Xinjiang.

The state’s restrictive abortion laws spotlight existing gender disparities within the VA medical system, according to former military women who shared their personal experiences during a listening tour held by Rep. Julia Brownley, D-Calif., chairwoman of the House Veterans Affairs Subcommittee on Health. The VA does not provide any abortion services, even initial consultations, to women seeking more information about terminating their pregnancies. And that doesn’t end when we get out,” veteran Amber Davila, 37, said outside of the session in Austin, Texas. “We will continue to make sure they have timely access to the full suite of reproductive care,” the VA said. “This is fuel to the fire,” said Plescher, lead outreach coordinator for Grace After Fire, a female veterans group based in Houston.

“Some of the prior studies had suggested that sex goes downhill and all women lose interest in sex as they get older,” Thomas said. For example, more highly educated women may have higher incomes and feel more stable in their lives with less stress. “I can’t tell you enough about the impact of anxiety and stress on sex,” Faubion said. “Then there’s what society teaches us about aging women,” Faubion said. Faubion added, “Bottom line: Women should talk to their providers if they’re having concerns about their sexual health.

Water's edge: the crisis of rising sea levels

But sea levels have been rising for 100 years in Baltimore.”ROCKET SCIENCEThe irony is evident at Wallops Flight Facility. Yet this bastion of climate research has been slow to apply the science of sea level rise to its own operations. Reviewers from state and federal agencies criticized the 348-page document for failing to adequately take rising sea levels into account in the project design and impact, or to temper future plans for expansion. Joshua Bundick, Wallops’s environmental planning manager, explained that he distilled the issues “down to only the highest points,” and sea level rise wasn’t among them. The cost to American taxpayers of repeated destruction of the parking lot and causeway from rising sea levels would only increase, Fish and Wildlife officials said.
