China’s ruling Communist Party views Taiwan as part of its territory, despite having never controlled it. In an initial response, Chen Binhua, spokesperson for China’s Taiwan Affairs Office said Taiwan’s presidential election result “will not change the basic layout and course of development in cross-strait relations.”“Taiwan is China’s Taiwan,” he said. While the stock market raced toward record highs in late 2023, some hedge funds mounted bets against a myriad of names. Against this backdrop, CNBC Pro screened FactSet data for stocks trading on the New York Stock Exchange and Nasdaq Exchange with the most short interest as of Dec. 15. Lucid Group , another EV maker, also saw a notable short interest increase, to about 27% of its float. Short interest also increased for used car retailer Carvana , climbing more than 7% to 35 million shares, or about 37% of its float. Companies that have continued to see notable short interest since November include plant-based meat producer Beyond Meat and solar energy companies Sunnova Energy and SunPower .

In a grave blow to its prospects, Ukraine aid has now been embroiled by Republicans in a separate imbroglio over immigration. While Ukraine’s survival is at stake, so is the reputation of the United States as a global leader. Johnson may struggle to retain his tenuous hold on his job if he uses Democratic votes to pass a Ukraine funding package. The Ukraine aid package is now caught in the most intractable US political issue — immigration. “We are at a moment in history.”But a group of Republican senators who normally back Ukraine aid signaled Monday they couldn’t move forward without immigration changes attached to the measure.
