How Dogs Help Us Lead Longer, Healthier Lives
  + stars: | 2023-11-10 | by ( Jen Golbeck | Stacey Colino | ) www.wsj.com   time to read: +1 min
Dogs seem to make us healthier than we would be without them. Social psychologist Bruce Headey conducted a survey of Australian dog-owners and found that they take fewer trips to the doctor and sleep better than non-dog-owners. It’s not that dog-owners are naturally healthier; bringing a dog into your life somehow brings these benefits along. James Serpell, a professor of animal ethics at the University of Pennsylvania, conducted a study in the U.K. that followed pet owners through the 10 months after they adopted their pet. Their scores on measures of general health also improved, and dog-owners increased their physical activity considerably.

Nov 10 (Reuters) - U.S. President Joe Biden's re-election campaign on Friday will register for the South Carolina Democratic primary, the party's first official clash and an early enthusiasm test for a president dogged by a rash of recent polls that show declining support among Black voters. It will mark a return to a state that Biden credits with catapulting him to the White House. Biden ousted Iowa and New Hampshire from the top spots on the party's nominating calendar in favor of South Carolina. James Clyburn, a South Carolina congressman and one of the nation's most influential Black leaders, is filing on behalf of the Biden campaign. A CNN poll published on Oct. 31 found that Biden's overall approval rating in South Carolina was just 33%, lower than his national approval, which has hovered around 40% in most polls.

CNN —A British couple died from carbon monoxide poisoning while on holiday at a luxury resort in Egypt after the room next door was sprayed with pesticide to kill bed bugs, a coroner has found. In some countries, Lambda is diluted with the substance dichloromethane, which causes the body to metabolize or ingest carbon monoxide. The fumigated room, which was sealed with masking tape around the door, was connected to theirs with an adjoining door, according to PA. The married couple returned to their room for the night but were found seriously ill the next day by their daughter. John Cooper, 69, was declared dead in the room, while his wife Susan, 63, died hours later in hospital.

Representative Elise Stefanik, a member of the House Republican leadership and an ally of former President Donald J. Trump, filed an ethics complaint Friday attacking the judge presiding over Mr. Trump’s civil fraud trial, the latest salvo in a right-wing war against the case. The New York attorney general, Letitia James, has accused Mr. Trump of fraudulent business practices, and in a pretrial ruling Justice Engoron agreed, validating the heart of her case. The letter, to a judicial conduct commission, is unlikely to have any immediate repercussions in the trial, which will determine the consequences Mr. Trump and his company will face as a result of the fraud. The judge has placed narrow gag orders on both the former president and his lawyers, but nothing bars Mr. Trump’s allies from their criticism. “I filed an official judicial complaint against Judge Arthur Engoron for his inappropriate bias and judicial intemperance in New York’s disgraceful lawsuit against President Donald J. Trump and the Trump Organization,” Ms. Stefanik said in a statement Friday.

Japan has become a gold mine for value investors

Having experienced a multi-decade decline after 1990, Japanese stocks have escaped the doldrums. Reuters GraphicsAnother shadow that has long lingered over corporate Japan is management teams which tended to neglect shareholders and prioritise the interests of other stakeholders. METI is also redefining the aim of Japanese companies, says Stephen Codrington, founder of the independent research firm Codrington Japan. Japan, whose regime was formerly unfriendly to equity investors, is moving in the opposite direction, says Drew Edwards, head of GMO Usonian Japan. The transplant surgery took 21 hours. Initially, doctors were just planning to include the eyeball as part of the face transplant for cosmetic reasons, Rodriguez said during a Zoom interview. Presently, the transplanted eye is not communicating with the brain through the optic nerve. James, who had retained vision in his right eye, knew he might not regain vision in the transplanted eye. "Hopefully this opens up a new path.”James might still regain sight in the transplanted eye, Rodriguez said.

James is recovering well from the dual transplant last May and the donated eye looks remarkably healthy. Whatever happens next, James' surgery offers scientists an unprecedented window into how the human eye tries to heal. The hurdle is how to regrow the optic nerve, although animal studies are making strides, Goldberg added. James’ optic nerve clearly hasn't healed. Ivanka Trump spent five hours on the witness stand on Wednesday, two days after her father testified in a fraud trial that threatens his business empire as he kicks off another run for the White House. Ms. Trump was the final Trump family member to testify at the trial, which stems from a lawsuit brought by New York’s attorney general, Letitia James. The judge, Arthur F. Engoron, ruled even before the trial began five weeks ago that Mr. Trump and the other defendants were liable for fraud. Ms. James has asked that Mr. Trump pay $250 million and that he and his sons be permanently barred from running a business in New York. Mr. Trump has denied wrongdoing.

Now it's Ivanka Trump's turn to face questioning in the civil fraud trial that is publicly probing into the family business. James alleges that Donald Trump's asset values were fraudulently pumped up for years on financial statements that helped him get loans and insurance. James, a Democrat, is seeking over $300 million in penalties and a ban on Trump doing business in New York. Like her brothers, who are still Trump Organization EVPs, she has professed minimal knowledge of their father's annual financial statements. As her father's inauguration neared, she announced in January 2017 that she was stepping away from her Trump Organization job.

After her father’s election loss in 2020, Ms. Trump sought to distance herself from his company — and his mounting legal problems, which now include four criminal indictments. Ms. Trump also hired her own lawyer, separate from the legal team representing her family in Ms. James’s case, a move that rankled some in the former president’s camp, a person with knowledge of the situation said. The last time Ms. Trump testified about her father — before a congressional committee investigating the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol — it was a major embarrassment for the former president. In the testimony, broadcast at a prime time congressional hearing, Ms. Trump acknowledged that her father had lost the 2020 election, prompting him to lash out at her for being “checked out” in the final days of his administration. Though their relationship was strained for a time, the two have had something of a rapprochement and speak regularly, the person with knowledge said.

The long-awaited move by Rep. James Comer, the chairman of the House Oversight Committee, to subpoena the president's son Hunter and his brother James comes as Republicans look to gain ground in their nearly yearlong investigation. Lawmakers also requested that James Biden's wife, Sara Biden, and Hallie Biden, the wife of the president's deceased son Beau, appear voluntarily for transcribed interviews. Requests for comment from Hunter Biden and James Biden were not immediately returned. The five-year investigation into Hunter Biden had been expected to end with a plea deal this summer, but it imploded during a July plea hearing. Weiss has now charged the president’s son with three firearms felonies related to the 2018 purchase of a gun during a period Hunter Biden has acknowledged being addicted to drugs.

Ms. James has asked that Mr. Trump pay $250 million and that he and his sons be permanently barred from running a business in New York. Mr. Trump has denied all wrongdoing. Illegal border crossings have reached records over the past two years. The one-page proposal, put forward by a group of Republican senators including Sens. James Lankford (R., Okla.), Lindsey Graham (R., S.C.) and Tom Cotton (R., Ark. ), represents the opening bid in negotiations with Senate Democrats and the White House, which has signaled some openness to immigration-policy changes. Biden’s request included money for border operations, but didn’t include any policy changes.

Just 30 minutes after Trump was sworn in, Judge Arthur Engoron – frustrated by the former president’s non-answers – turned to the former president’s defense team for help. Trump is known for being long-winded and talking around an issue instead of answering questions directly. “This is not a political rally.”But Trump’s two lead attorneys, Chris Kise and Alina Habba, did little to help. “This is a very unfair trial,” Trump said from the witness stand. That narrative is a markedly different one than Trump’s two adult sons provided in testimony last week.

Persistent inflationary pressures have led to depressed levels of consumer spending all year, according to Bank of America. Consumers are still spending — in fact, they're spending more than they are earning — as employment levels and hourly wage growth remain fairly strong . Some analysts see an opportunity to pick up shares of battered-down retail stocks. According to Barclay's Yih, spending levels "almost have to be worse" next year. LPL's Roach similarly expects consumers spending to hit a roadblock in the coming months.

Trump Can’t Resist Turning Testimony Into Tirade

Trump, at times seemingly unable to stop himself from melting into a temper tantrum, claimed repeatedly, “It's election interference.”“We have a very hostile judge,” he said at one point. I wanted a jury.”To be clear, this particular type of case proceeding – determining damages in a civil fraud case – doesn’t use juries. That narrative is a markedly different one than Trump’s two adult sons provided in testimony last week. But Engoron already dismissed that defense in finding Trump liable for fraud. The defense team is expected to call many of the witnesses who have already testified, including Trump himself and his two adult sons.

The outbursts demonstrated the former president’s disdain for a case that has already imperiled his family business and labeled him a fraud and a cheat. Mr. Trump, who was accused by Ms. James of inflating his net worth to defraud banks and insurers, acknowledged helping to assemble annual financial statements submitted to the banks. “I would look at them, I would see them, and I would maybe on occasion have some suggestions,” said Mr. Trump, who began the day looking tired but soon grew animated. Although the admission appeared to bolster the attorney general’s case, Mr. Trump, seated 30 feet from Ms. James, also sought to minimize the import of the financial statements, which he said he largely left to aides. He noted that they contained numerous disclaimers, making them essentially “worthless.” Banks paid little attention to them, he said, before promising, unprompted, that some of his bankers would soon testify in his defense.

Newcastle condemned Sunday the discriminatory abuse sent to Bruno Guimarães and Joe Willock in the wake of a controversy-laden Premier League match against Arsenal that has sparked heavy criticism by the London club about the standard of officiating in England’s top division. Willock, who is Black, used his Instagram account to highlight racist messages he received after Newcastle's 1-0 win on Saturday. Guimarães, a Brazil international, was also involved in some of the most heated incidents of the match at St. James' Park. Newcastle said it “strongly condemns” the abuse toward its midfielders, adding: “We are providing support to Bruno and Joe and will work with relevant authorities and social media platforms to identify those responsible so that they can be held to account.”Kick It Out, a leading anti-discrimination group in soccer, called on social media companies to offer better safeguards against the abuse. On the issue of intent, in last week’s testimony, Donald Trump Jr. and Eric Trump both attempted to shift the blame onto their accountants. First, the judge has already rejected a key route Trump tried to avoid an admission that he intended to defraud the victims. He fined Trump’s lawyers for doing just that. Again, the attorney general wins whether Trump denies it, or whether he doubles down on what the judge has called Trump’s “fantasy world” financial claims. If the past is prologue, Trump likely will continue to deny liability: Blowing smoke is simply in the nature of a narcissist.
