Morning Bid: Still seeking decisive stimulus in China
  + stars: | 2023-06-20 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +2 min
A look at the day ahead in European and global markets from Sonali DesaiDisappointment has been the prevailing sentiment so far this week as investors grow impatient with the wait for more decisive Chinese stimulus measures. China delivered the expected 10 basis-point reduction to its lending benchmarks, but disappointed those looking for a bigger cut to the mortgage-linked five-year loan prime rate. Chinese property stocks took a hit and the yuan came under further pressure, reversing much of its bounce against the U.S. dollar late last week when stimulus expectations were driving price action. Still, that helped Australian shares build on recent gains to reach a seven-week high, bucking declines across Asian bourses where rising Treasury yields and souring anticipation of Chinese stimulus efforts spurred broad declines. The wary investor mood is likely to spill into Europe, where the data calendar is confined to German producer prices for May.

An owner of a Northern California taqueria was the target of a federal wage theft investigation in November 2021 when he brought in a strange guest to talk to his employees. Eduardo Hernandez told workers at Taqueria Garibaldi in Sacramento that the man, who claimed to be a priest, was there to hear confession and “help with mental health,” according to an account that one employee gave federal regulators. But the employee, Maria Parra, found her interaction with the man to be more like an interrogation than a confession. Ms. Parra said that he told her he would ask her questions “to get the sins out of me.” But when the questioning began, the man “mostly had work-related questions,” she said. “The priest asked if I had stolen anything at work, if I was late to my employment, if I did anything to harm my employer and if I had any bad intentions toward my employment,” Ms. Parra said in a sworn declaration.

REUTERS/Jonathan ErnstWASHINGTON, June 14 (Reuters) - A collection of the nation's leading and biggest spending environmental groups endorsed President Joe Biden's re-election bid on Wednesday, an early sign that he has consolidated their support despite some recent policy moves that angered climate activists. The League of Conservation Voters (LCV) Action Fund, billionaire Tom Steyer's NextGen PAC, NRDC Action Fund and the Sierra Club endorsed Biden during an LCV dinner in Washington. This is the first time the four groups have ever jointly announced a presidential endorsement, according to the Biden campaign. LOS ANGELES, June 14 (Reuters) - Texas Governor Greg Abbott on Wednesday said the first group of migrants bused from his state to Los Angeles had arrived in the California city, the latest move by Republicans opposed to Democratic President Joe Biden's immigration policies. Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass, a Democrat, said more than 40 migrants had arrived in the city and called the bus trip "a despicable stunt that Republican Governors have grown so fond of." "Los Angeles is a major city that migrants seek to go to, particularly now that its city leaders approved its self-declared sanctuary city status." On June 9, a motion to draft legislation to make Los Angeles a "true sanctuary city" was passed by the City Council, one of its proponents, councilmember Eunisses Hernandez, posted on Twitter. Henriette Borgund knows attackers can find weaknesses in the defences of a big renewables power company - she's found them herself. She joined Norway's Hydro (NHY.OL) as an "ethical hacker" last April, bringing years of experience in military cyberdefence to bear at a time of war in Europe and chaos in energy markets. They're nervously monitoring a hybrid war where physical energy infrastructure has already been targeted, from the Nord Stream gas pipelines to the Kakhovka dam. It said Russia had tried to destroy digital networks and cause power cuts, and that missile attacks on facilities were often accompanied by cyberattacks. "Companies in the energy space, their core business is producing energy, not cybersecurity," said Jalal Bouhdada, CEO of cybersecurity firm Applied Risk, a division of DNV.

Morning Bid: China steals the show before US inflation
  + stars: | 2023-06-13 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +2 min
A look at the day ahead in European and global markets from Sonali DesaiThe People's Bank of China (PBOC) managed to liven up the wait for Tuesday's highly anticipated U.S. consumer price inflation (CPI) data by lowering a short-term lending rate for the first time in 10 months. Several analysts had been expecting a cut to the one-year medium-term lending facility rate on Thursday, when the PBOC is widely expected to roll over maturing loans. The move had little broader impact on markets in the run-up to tonight's U.S. CPI release and this week's major central bank decisions. Europe's calendar highlights include UK employment data, Germany's ZEW survey for June and final May inflation data, and Bank of (BoE) Governor Andrew Bailey's parliamentary testimony. In the U.S., CPI data is likely to dominate market interest and factor into the Federal Open Market Committee's (FOMC) deliberations as it begins a two-day meeting.

New York will get a new dance festival this fall: Van Cleef & Arpels, the French luxury jeweler, announced on Tuesday that it would sponsor a 16-day event partly aimed at bringing more international choreographers and ensembles to the city. The festival, Dance Reflections, will feature groups like LA(HORDE), a French collective that will perform a work set to electronic music with the Ballet National de Marseille. The festival will open with an American classic: “Dance,” a 1979 collaboration between the postmodern choreographer Lucinda Childs and the composer Philip Glass, performed by the Lyon Opera Ballet on Oct. 19 at New York City Center. “We want to combine together very different approaches and to promote the diversity and richness of dance,” Serge Laurent, director of dance and culture programs for Van Cleef & Arpels, said in an interview. “It’s important for the development of artists and audience to be exposed to different approaches, and to have another view of the international scene.”The lineup also includes work by the experimental choreographer Gisèle Vienne and U.S. premieres by Rachid Ouramdane, who directs the Chaillot-Théâtre National de la Danse in Paris; the contemporary choreographer Dimitri Chamblas, in a collaboration with Kim Gordon; the Polish-born choreographer Ola Maciejewska; and the British-Rwandan artist Dorothée Munyaneza.

Flowerlike concrete appendages rose to the sun, bejeweled with glass, marbles and shards of old pots. Broken tiles were cemented into intricate mosaics called trencadís — the stuff Antoni Gaudí once made famous in Barcelona. But unlike Gaudí, the creator of this construction had no training in architecture, art or engineering. The art world has long kept a place at the table for so-called “outsider art.” Works by painters with no formal training get special auctions at Christie’s. New York has had an art fair devoted to outsider artists since the 1990s, which welcomes art by children, prisoners and a wide variety of others.

CNN —Eating cassava flour helped save the lives of four children found alive in the Amazon jungle more than a month after their plane crashed, according to a Colombian military special forces official. The children ate “three kilograms (six pounds) of farina,” a coarse cassava flour commonly used by indigenous tribes in the Amazon region, said spokesperson Pedro Arnulfo Sánchez Suárez. The children’s mother Magdalena Mucutuy Valencia was killed in the plane crash on May 1, leaving them alone and stranded in the Amazon jungle. The children’s disappearance sparked a massive military-led search operation that saw more than one hundred Colombian special forces troops and over 70 indigenous scouts combing the deep forest. They told officials that they had found a dog – a Belgian Shepherd search dog named Wilson that belonged to special forces.

CNN —Four young children have been found alive after more than a month wandering the Amazon where they survived like “children of the jungle,” according to Colombia’s President Gustavo Petro. Petro said the children were all together when they were found, adding they had demonstrated an example of “total survival that will be remembered in history.”“They are children of the jungle and now they are children of Colombia,” he added. The children, who appear gaunt in the photos, are being evaluated by doctors and will be taken to the town of San Jose del Guaviare. When we found the children we felt joy, we don’t know what to do, but we are grateful to God,” he said. During a press conference Friday evening, Petro said he hoped to speak with the children on Saturday.

CNN —Archaeologists in Spain have discovered prehistoric paintings in hard-to-reach caves in the east of the country using drone technology. The use of drones allowed researchers to quickly gather evidence of previously unseen cave paintings dating from 5,000- 7,500 years ago, according to a statement from the team at the University of Alicante, Spain.
