NEW YORK (AP) — The Pulitzer Prize Board has revised its longtime rules on eligibility for many of its arts and letters awards and will now allow those not born in the U.S. and other non-citizens to compete. The board announced Tuesday that permanent residents and those who have made the U.S. their longtime primary home will be eligible in the categories for books, drama and music. “This expansion of eligibility is an appropriate update of our rules and compatible with the goals Joseph Pulitzer had in establishing these awards.”Last August, hundreds of writers endorsed an open letter calling for the Pulitzer board to permit non-U.S. citizens to compete. Signers included Sandra Cisneros, Brit Bennett, Dave Eggers and Pulitzer winners Andrew Sean Greer and Diane Seuss. Joseph Pulitzer founded the prizes in 1917 with a mission to honor “American” journalism and literature.

New York CNN —The Queen, better known as Beyoncé, had a dress code in mind for Renaissance tour concert goers attending her “House of Chrome,” as she described her concerts. Unprecedented salesAt a pivotal moment during each concert, Beyoncé flicks her wrist and pans out her black handheld fan. A group of fans pose for a portrait before entering Beyoncé's Renaissance World Tour on Friday, Sept. 1, 2023 in Inglewood, CA. “I did not see them becoming my best seller, much less my by-far-best-seller, because of something as random as a concert tour,” Fritts said. The company logo of Chinese developer Country Garden is pictured at the Shanghai Country Garden Center in Shanghai, China August 9, 2023. It has around $14.8 billion worth of debt due within 12 months, while its cash levels are around $13.8 billion. Country Garden declined to comment. Despite those measures, China's new home prices fell for the fourth month in August, according to a private survey on Friday, as the property debt crisis kept confidence at a low ebb. "Country Garden will probably make full use of the grace periods…it still looks challenging for them to generate enough cash for the upcoming payments, both onshore and offshore," said Ting Meng, a senior credit strategist at ANZ.

Mississippi hunters just broke the state record for the largest alligator ever caught. These hunting programs help control alligator populations and fund state wildlife agencies. This has drawn attention to the state's alligator hunting program, which may provide more benefits for the reptiles than you might think. Because of this system, state officials were able to track the 776 alligators that were harvested in Mississippi in 2021. It's best for both the alligators and humans to keep their populations separate, at least from a public relations standpoint, Watkins said.

Small farms with natural landscape features such as shade trees, hedgerows and tracts of intact forest provide a refuge for some tropical bird populations, according to an 18-year study in Costa Rica. For almost two decades, ornithologist James Zook has been collecting detailed records on nearly 430 tropical bird species found on small farms, plantations and undisturbed forests in the country. While birds thrive the most in undisturbed rainforests, Zook said some species usually found in forests can establish populations in “diversified farms” that partially mimic a natural forest environment. “In these diversified farms, you see growth over the long term in bird species with specialized needs,” such as safe and shady nooks to build nests and a variety of food sources, Hendershot said. Three-quarters of the 305 species found in diversified farms showed stable or growing populations over the time of study.

The EU wants to wean itself off Russian fossil fuels by 2027 and has cut its use of piped Russian gas dramatically. Even so, EU countries imported a record amount of Russian LNG this year, per Global Witness. Global Witness projects the EU's Russian LNG purchases in 2023 to total nearly 5.3 billion euros, or $5.75 billion. "Buying Russian gas has the same impact as buying Russian oil. REUTERS/Gary Cameron/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsHOUSTON, Aug 30 (Reuters) - Long-term buyers of U.S. liquefied natural gas (LNG) are willingly agreeing to higher liquefaction fees at newer export projects, according to analysts and developers familiar with the matter. The U.S. emerged in 2022 as the world's second largest LNG exporter on plentiful supplies of natural gas and relatively low processing costs per metric ton of LNG. But rising interest rates and higher construction costs have pushed up liquefaction fees, also known as tolling fees. Other developers are turning to increased equity investment in new projects to reduce the impact of higher interest rates on finance costs, said Poten's Feer.

CNN —Afghanistan’s Band-e-Amir National Park was known for having employed the country’s first-ever female park rangers. Now, women won’t even be allowed to visit, let alone work there, as the Taliban deepens its repressive rule over the country. Heather Barr, associate director of the women’s rights at Human Rights Watch, said in a statement Monday that the ban shows how “the walls are closing in on women” within Afghanistan. Since re-taking control of the country in August 2021, amid the United States’ chaotic, controversial withdrawal, the Taliban has rolled back decades of progress on human rights. In Afghanistan, “there is no such thing as women’s freedom anymore,” Mahbouba Seraj, an Afghan women’s rights activist and 2023 Nobel Peace Prize nominee, said earlier this month.

Spot gold held its ground at $1,895.70 per ounce by 0520 GMT, hovering above a five-month low of $1,883.70 hit last week. Following a week of back-to-back losses, gold on Monday settled 0.3% higher to post its best day in more than two weeks. Any correction in the U.S. dollar from recent highs could immediately ignite a strong gold market rally, he said. For an outlook on interest rates, comments from Fed Chair Jerome Powell on Friday will be monitored at a meeting of central bankers at Jackson Hole, Wyoming.

Wildfire smoke is a seasonal occurrence for much of heavily-forested British Columbia, but the number of wildfires and amount of land burned is trending higher as a result of climate change, increasing concerns about the impact on human health.
