Veteran Morgan Stanley dealmaker Rob Kindler to join law firm
  + stars: | 2023-06-06 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +2 min
June 6 (Reuters) - Rob Kindler, a top executive at Morgan Stanley (MS.N), is leaving the investment bank after a 17-year stint to join a major law firm. The veteran dealmaker will join Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison as the global chair of mergers and acquisitions (M&A), the law firm said on Tuesday. A New Yorker, Kindler began his legal practice at Cravath, Swaine & Moore, another major law firm where he spent nearly two decades. "I am delighted to once again have him as my partner," said Barshay, who is the chair of the Paul, Weiss' corporate department. Kindler's return to legal practice coincides with a challenging period for the industry, which like investment banks, has been navigating a dreary environment for dealmaking.

Consumer stocks Constellation Brands (STZ) and Procter & Gamble (PG) were the subjects of Wall Street scrutiny Thursday. Analysts are concerned about the stock's valuation and the risk to the company's volumes as P & G raises prices on its products. If uncertainty over the health of U.S. banks persists, analysts believe, P & G stock will "likely hold up." But they added, "If the issue dies down, we expect investors to move into less risk-averse stocks." Truist also thinks "investors may be overreading" the consumer goods giant's better-than-expected fiscal third quarter in April.
Walmart — Shares of the big box retailer rose slightly after the company reported an earnings and revenue beat for the fiscal first quarter. However, its adjusted earnings guidance for the fiscal second quarter came in lower than expectations. Bath & Body Works — The retailer's shares jumped more than 9% after its fiscal first quarter earnings topped expectations. Take-Two Interactive — Shares surged almost 13% and hit a new 52-week high following the company's earnings announcement Wednesday. [1/3] Packaged food for sale is seen on shelves at a Dollar Tree in Islandia, New York, U.S., May 12, 2023. Razor manufacturer Edgewell Personal Care Co (EPC.N) and Kraft Heinz Co (KHC.O) have overhauled or built new teams dedicated to working with the biggest U.S. dollar stores like Dollar Tree Inc (DLTR.O) and Dollar General Corp (DG.N) in the last year. Makers of food and household staples are pushing deeper into dollar stores because the low-cost retailers are opening thousands of locations each year. Griffin added that dollar stores are also introducing more "premium" private label brands, like Dollar General's Nature's Menu for pets. Kraft-Heinz also created a new team of five people late last year to identify and develop products for dollar stores, a spokesman said.

ZURICH, May 15 (Reuters) - Novartis (NOVN.S) on Monday named the intended new board members of Sandoz, the generics business it plans to spin off to shareholders later this year. The Basel company approved the recommendations of Sandoz Chairman-designate Gilbert Ghostine for the 10 members of the board, which will start preparatory work in June. Others to be appointed to the board include former Novartis executive Karen Huebscher, Aarti Shah, who worked at Eli Lilly (LLY.N), and Deutsche Lufthansa (LHAG.DE) CFO Remco Steenburgen. Unilever (ULVR.L) Chief Legal Officer Maria Varsellona, and former Procter & Gamble (PG.N) executive Yannis Skoufalos, complete the nominations to the committee. "The Sandoz Board of Directors will start preparatory work from June onwards and will be effective following the planned spin-off of Sandoz in the second half of 2023, subject to Novartis Board of Directors and shareholder approval," Novartis said on Monday.

Concern about a potential U.S. government default has only mounted in recent days, contributing to back-to-back weekly losses in the S & P 500. By Feb. 7, 2012, the S & P 500 closed above its late-July peak. A similar rationale seems to explain why TJX Companies (TJX) had the third-best relative performance, falling only 5.9% during the 2011 debt-ceiling jitters. TJX had a great rest of the year, too, gaining 22% from the S & P 500 index's 2011 August bottom to year-end. What's more, 12 Club stocks finished 2011 higher than their July 22 close, the S & P 500's late-July peak that year.
U.S. companies are reporting that demand in China is returning, boosting their sales at a time when many U.S. consumers are pulling back their spending. Starbucks reported that its same-store sales in China rose 3% in its latest quarter, reversing their declines. Some Wall Street analysts were still anticipating shrinking same-store sales for the company's second-largest market. That quarter, Starbucks' same-store sales in China sank 23%. Yum China , Yum Brands' master franchisee in China, also said its same-store sales grew 8% in the first quarter.
The China Development Forum, a high-profile, government-hosted conference with a who’s who of international executives in attendance, was a moment for Beijing to renew its efforts to win over foreign businesses. Businesses from outside China “are not foreigners, but family,” said Wang Wentao, China’s commerce minister. State media reported that the chief executives of Apple, Pfizer and Procter & Gamble were at the forum, held in late March. Mr. Wang pledged to remove obstacles preventing firms from investing more — 2023, he declared, was “Invest in China year.”The good will did not last long. The recent targeting of consulting and advisory firms with foreign ties through raids, detainments and arrests has reignited concerns about doing business in China.
He found a series of prompts that allows GPT-4 to respond with good stock market insight. The crossroad where technology meets the stock market isn't new territory for Patel. It responded with seven key variables that did indeed impact 2022's broad stock market performance. It picked three of the same stocks Patel already held: Microsoft, Visa, and Apple. Otherwise, the majority of them would have been able to navigate 2022's stock market better.
Starbucks (SBUX) and Qualcomm (QCOM) have also flagged uncertainties related to the country, which is a top market for both. Beijing abandoned its zero-Covid policy in December and scrapped longstanding quarantine requirements for international arrivals in January, ending restrictions that had isolated its economy. The welcomed, if abrupt, policy U-turn led to hopes that China could help propel global growth as it had before the pandemic. The idea was that as soon as the zero-Covid policy would be over, the Chinese households and consumers would just go berserk. Starbucks warned last Tuesday that sales growth in China was starting to cool — and likely would continue that trajectory over the next six months.
Investors can look at the debt ceiling crisis of 2011 for guidance on where to invest as the nation contends with a similar stalemate and potential downturn, CNBC's Jim Cramer said Thursday. "We can buy the stocks of literally any drug company," Cramer said. Consumer products stocks also offer opportunities, Cramer continued. "I'd be thinking of Procter & Gamble ," he said, noting it held up during the 2011 debt downturn, and of Johnson & Johnson spinoff Kenvue. Alongside those names, Cramer believes that PepsiCo is a "fabulous performer," and that Mondelez and Hershey both offer strength among the food names.
This dividend-paying ETF may help protect investors during wild market swings. "We want strong, powerful dividend growth," the firm's chief investment officer Kevin Simpson told "ETF Edge" on Monday. "We tactically sprinkle in some short-term, out of the money covered calls." When asked about whether selling covered calls forfeits upside reward potential, Simpson claims there's a balance at play. "Covered calls work best when you need them ... [the] most."

Yum Brands on Wednesday reported quarterly earnings that fell short of analysts' expectations, despite a China sales rebound for KFC and Pizza Hut. Yum joins the growing list of companies that includes Procter & Gamble and Starbucks that have reported recovering sales in China. In China, KFC's largest market, system sales climbed 17%, helping lift the chain's international same-store sales growth 11%. Overall, Pizza Hut's same-store sales rose 7%. Next quarter, Yum won't face any comparisons that include its Russian business because the company suspended operations there in early March last year.
Pricing power is what's allowing many companies — including seven of our Club holdings — to support revenue growth and enhance, or at the very least protect, profitability during an earnings season marked by a still-elevated inflationary environment. Food and consumer goods stocks are poised to keep running, Jim Cramer said Friday, at least if no external news drags down the entire market. The resilience of snack and packaged-goods stocks will hold particularly true as debt-ceiling talks flounder, he added. Colgate-Palmolive also rallied following an earnings report that topped revenue expectations. Cramer also saw the same promise in General Mills , which hit a new 52-week high Friday, and Procter & Gamble , which beat earnings and revenue expectations last week. "Even as these consumer-packaged good stocks have run a great deal, I don't think it's too late," Cramer said.
Reckitt CEO switch may boost odds of a takeover

LONDON, April 26 (Reuters Breakingviews) - Reckitt Benckiser’s (RKT.L) decision to appoint an insider as CEO may help to entice prospective buyers, like U.S. giant Procter & Gamble (PG.N). Reckitt has been a perennial takeover target, as previous bosses struggled to deliver consistently strong revenue growth. It is still paying down a hefty debt pile following an ill-advised $17 billion takeover of baby food maker Mead Johnson in 2017. Net revenue grew by nearly 8% year-on-year in the first quarter – after excluding acquisitions, disposals and currency fluctuations. Reckitt’s shares trade at 17 times forecast 2023 earnings, compared with P&G’s multiple of nearly 25 times.
