With an ultimate goal to be the go-to currency for the global financial system, it was, in hindsight, too ambitious, Marcus admits now. "If you're dependent on one centralized stablecoin to do global payments, it's a problem as we've experienced firsthand," he said. Why Meta's crypto project failedIn 2019 Meta unveiled plans to create a digital currency pegged to hard currencies including the US dollar. With his new startup, Lightspark, Marcus plans to hypercharge the global payments system is simpler, or at least less grandiose. Users will swap their local currency for bitcoin and then have it converted to the local currency of whichever country the capital is needed in.

JPMorgan Chase is stepping up its appeal to small business customers by planning to offer digital payroll processing, CNBC has learned. The bank has picked San Francisco-based fintech player Gusto to provide the underlying technology for the feature, according to Gusto CEO Josh Reeves. "If you're a customer of Chase payments solutions, you can go to payroll from the same exact place you do banking," Reeves said. It's part of a larger battle for the loyalty of American retail and business customers as fintech players including PayPal and Square morph into do-everything providers that threaten traditional banks. JPMorgan has previously rolled out fintech features, including a Square-like credit card reader for small businesses and early direct deposit for consumers.

Do you think that he senses the enormity of the power and, therefore, the responsibility? I don’t think he understands it when it comes to X. He’s impulsive and sometimes contradictory in how he deals with the moderation issues. There’s times when he sees himself in epic terms, and there’s times when he says, “All right, I have to be more careful.”Given how much time you’ve spent with him, do you think you now understand what drives him? We all have some demons in our heads from childhood, and he’s got two orders of magnitude more than most of us. I don’t think he would have let me ride by his side for two years if he didn’t crave to have the story of his life — warts and all — out there.

At Musk's 2013 birthday bash, he and Larry Page discussed AI's role in humanity's future, per biographer Walter Isaacson's retelling. Page labeled Musk a "specist," while Musk defended his views as "pro-human." Musk even attempted to stop Google's acquisition of AI company DeepMind, saying Page shouldn't control the future of AI, Isaacson wrote in a Time Magazine report. Per Isaacson, the reason behind the thwarting attempt was Musk's distrust of then-CEO of Google, Larry Page, and his views towards AI. Musk, Page, and Google did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Insider, sent outside regular business hours.

The PayPal logo is seen at an office building in Berlin, Germany, March 5, 2019. The Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC) said it has started proceedings against PayPal Australia Pty Ltd in a case that highlights a contract term that gives PayPal business account holders 60 days to notify discrepancies in fees charged. The regulator views the term as unfair as it authorises PayPal to retain fees it has inaccurately charged. "We allege this term is unfair because it allows PayPal to escape the consequences of its own errors in overcharging small businesses, and places additional burdens on small businesses to detect and correct charging errors," ASIC Deputy Chair Sarah Court said. As at June 30, there were about 608,275 business account contracts between PayPal and active users in the country.
