If history is any guide, Walgreens Boots Alliance may fare better after getting tossed from the Dow Jones Industrial Average . In fact, data shows that betting on a stock that's leaving the Dow is often a better trade for investors than buying shares of a stock that's entering the 127-year-old average. What history shows Alcoa was the best-performing stock among the last 10 outgoing Dow members. For example, Honeywell International surged more than 40% one year after joining the Dow, while UnitedHealth rallied nearly 28%. General Electric , the last of the original 12 Dow stocks, plunged about 58% one year after leaving the average in 2018.

The group kept lagging last year as markets braced for a recession that would especially hurt economically sensitive small caps. And although the market isn't on small caps' side, Rendino believes historical precedent is. However, Rendino isn't discouraged by small caps' slow start and is instead pleased that his firm is outperforming. "Small caps were up in the fourth quarter, and we're having a really good year," Rendino said. "And I know why companies aren't in the good graces of investors and why certain investors shy away from companies."

CNN —The South Carolina Republican presidential primary is usually the most important contest of the nominating season. Since 1980, the only Republican to win the nomination without winning South Carolina was Mitt Romney in 2012. While Haley is unlikely to take South Carolina, she is definitely outperforming her national baseline. Both counties have relatively high levels of college graduates, who have been most hostile to the former president in GOP primaries historically. Trump winning college graduates in the South Carolina primary would match what we’re seeing in national polling of the Republican electorate.

Their flagship Marsico Focus Fund (MFOCX) has climbed 16% so far in 2024, through Thursday, outperforming both the S & P 500 and technology-heavy Nasdaq Composite . Between 60% and 75% of the portfolio is in "core" growth companies, or those that are likely to see sustained and predictable earnings growth. The balance is in companies undergoing large transformations that can catalyze earnings growth once a restructuring is complete. "When money was very cheap and interest rates were extremely low, it was easy to buy an index fund," Marsico said. "And that's why there's greater differentiation with stock pickers than just buying a general basket of market companies."

More than 3,500 people from 34 countries registered for the chance to bid on the superstar Elton John’s rocket-shaped cocktail shakers, ornate jumpsuits, and black-and-white fashion photography at Christie’s “Goodbye Peachtree Road” auction this week. Two sales over three days featuring the celebrated musician’s belongings rocketed to $14.4 million, with auction-house fees, outperforming the high estimate of $11.3 million. Bidders vied for silver leather platform boots the singer wore throughout the 1970s (they sold for $94,000, more than nine times the high estimate) and an 18-karat gold Rolex watch with a leopard-print dial (it fetched $176,400, about three times the high estimate). Most of the remaining auctions will take place online through Feb. 28, including sales of John’s celebrity portraits, jewelry and Versace clothes. With six online sales to go, the collection has already exceeded the original (and perhaps conservative) expectation of $10 million set by Christie’s.

Why rich companies also keep getting richerThere's another major disconnect that the broader market's impressive performance is masking, strategists at Morgan Stanley remarked in a recent note. Since then, the return gap has gotten even worse in a historically narrow market, Wilson wrote. Morgan Stanley"The equity market understands this economy is not that great for the average company or consumer," Wilson wrote. This rare combination of expansionary fiscal policy and restrictive monetary policy has had the unintended consequence of "crowding out the private economy," Wilson wrote. Companies that can grow without borrowing money at unattractive rates are at a huge advantage, which Morgan Stanley believes has fueled their immense success lately.

New York CNN —US markets broke a five-week winning streak last Friday after disappointing inflation data reignited economic and interest rate-related fears on Wall Street. Then last week, two key inflation indicators for January — the Consumer Price Index and Producer Price Index — rose above Wall Street expectations. Richmond Fed President Thomas Barkin said the new data showed that the Fed needs more confidence before cutting rates. I think in this case, the market isn’t necessarily telling you much about the economy’s fundamentals, the market is telling you what other market participants think. And I think that those economic fundamentals get you to the part that says, you know, it’s not not the economy.

The last financial stock Berkshire bought was Capital One Financial in the first quarter of 2023. A sleeper hit at the box office, the film is a "healthy sign" for the romantic comedy genre and other mid-budget Hollywood flicks, said Scott Meslow, author of "From Hollywood With Love: The Rise and Fall (and Rise Again) of the Romantic Comedy." In the seven weeks since, the romantic comedy has tallied $170 million globally, including $80 million from domestic theaters, according to data from Comscore. Between 2004 and 2010, Hollywood consistently released between 15 and 25 romantic comedy or romance films each year. Meslow said there was no rom-com "kill shot," a film or series of films that sparked the decline in theatrical releases of the genre. While some films will still be released only on streaming platforms, Hollywood has rediscovered the importance of theatrical as part of overall downstream revenue.

But for music marketers tasked with helping artists and new releases go viral on social media, the show must go on. Others are encouraging creators and performers to use unofficial, user-uploaded versions of UMG artists' songs in TikTok videos. Other marketers have similarly shifted promotional efforts from TikTok to reels for UMG songs. Still, even without UMG artists' songs, TikTok remains a critical part of the song-marketing playbook, music marketers told BI. Some marketers are asking creators to swap in these unofficial tracks into muted videos to promote the UMG artists, several of the music marketers said.

What are zombie companies? Japan's "zombie" problem has been around for a long time, said William Pesek, author of the book "Japanization: What the World Can Learn from Japan's Lost Decades." Raising the borrowing cost will put these zombie companies at risk of bankruptcy and bailouts, which could have a broader impact on the economy if there are job losses. "But the aid program has led to an increase in the number of 'zombie' companies that would otherwise have been unable to continue operating," the report added. Japan's stock markets have also been testing new highs since 2023, and higher interest rates could halt the bull run.
