How Jesmyn Ward Is Reimagining Southern Literature
  + stars: | 2023-10-13 | by ( Imani Perry | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +5 min
Ward is classically beautiful — delicate and golden-skinned with her hair hanging in long curls. The town is important to Ward for another reason, though: Her great-grandfather Harry was the son of a white mother, Edna. Ward borrowed her family’s complex racial history in writing “Sing, Unburied, Sing.” That family history tells us something about how Ward thinks about history and its relationship to her fiction. The contours of Ward’s life were formed by two hurricanes. In 1969, Hurricane Camille struck, marking a terrible watershed in Black life on the Gulf Coast.

But 3D manufacturing, including printing and weaving, is helping create a zero-waste future. Existing innovations are being fine-tuned daily, and creators are dreaming up ways to turn zero-waste fashion from a utopian dream into a reality. Despite these restrictions, Pasricha's designs were proof that zero-waste 3D printing was possible, especially with small designs such as buttons and jewelry. Social listening refers to monitoring your social media for customer feedback and industry trends. Social listening isn't easy, but small-business founders say it's worth your time. Here, two small-business owners explain how social listening benefits their companies. Sharma and Arias handle most of the social listening for their companies, with help from their small teams and the tools available within social platforms. "It's very manual," Arias said, adding that her customer-care consultant helped with day-to-day social listening and responding to comments and DMs.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — A massive health care strike over wages and staffing shortages headed into its final day on Friday without a deal between industry giant Kaiser Permanente and the unions representing the 75,000 workers who picketed this week. “No health care worker wants to go on strike,” Caroline Lucas, the coalition's executive director, said Thursday. The strike comes in a year when there have been work stoppages within multiple industries, including transportation, entertainment and hospitality. The health care industry alone has been hit by several strikes this year as it confronts burnout from heavy workloads — problems greatly exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic. The White House on Thursday said President Joe Biden “always” supports union members who choose to strike when asked about the demonstration by Kaiser workers.

SAN DIEGO (AP) — Manager Bob Melvin's job appears to be safe with the underwhelming San Diego Padres after owner Peter Seidler said in a statement Monday morning that the current leadership team “continues to have my full support.”The announcement came less than 24 hours after the Padres finished the most disappointing season in franchise history at 82-80. There have been numerous reports of a fractured relationship between Melvin, who finished his second season with San Diego and 20th overall as a big league manager, and general manager A.J. “We entered 2023 with expectations that we would build on last year's NLCS appearance and contend for a World Series championship,” Seidler said in the statement.
