My first position in my brand-new career began as a substitute teacher in the elementary school I attended as a child. In my fourth year of education, I've found myself working in a great elementary school with an equally wonderful staff and an administration that appears to appreciate my work.

When I started my job, I struggled to connect with my coworkers and hid behind my desk. A therapist told me to find common ground with my coworkers; I learned we shared a love of music. It was hard to maintain those new friendships when I left the company, but I'm working on it. At work, I wanted to talk to people and make friendships with coworkers in the office. Luckily, my colleagues invited me to a work happy hour a week after my time at the company ended.

Key swing states like North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Nevada and Michigan are still experiencing a high volume of mail-in and absentee voting. That has prompted multiple lawsuits in battleground states where Republicans are suing to challenge everything from whether mail-in ballot envelopes are properly sealed to whether they are postmarked correctly. After his 2020 loss, he has railed against mail-in voting, saying this summer it “isn’t working, it’s corrupt.” But he also emphasizes that every vote matters, including early voting and absentee ballots. The Republican National Committee and Republican Party of Pennsylvania filed a lawsuit to the state’s Supreme Court, seeking to end the mail-in ballot “notice-and-cure” procedures. Mail-in ballots wait to be processed on a table at the Wake County Board of Elections in Raleigh, North Carolina.

A television broadcasts the Federal Reserve's interest rate cut on the floor of the New York Stock Exchange on Sept. 18, 2024. Roche said the figures made the Fed's "jumbo interest rate cut look silly, populist and panicky." 1 is that [it gives the impression that] the economy is more fragile than it is ... and the economy is fine, thank you very much, and doesn't need jumbo rate cuts," he told CNBC's "Squawk Box Europe." And headline and core inflation will stay above the Fed target of 2%, so the case for aggressive rate cuts [is not there]," he said. "Yes there is a case for modest rate cuts, there is a case for 25 to 50 basis point cuts by January next year, but a case for 50 basis point cut at the next meeting just does not exist," Parker said.

Goldman lowers recession odds to just 15%
  + stars: | 2024-10-07 | by ( Jeff Cox | ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +3 min
The bank's economists over the weekend lowered their recession probability to just 15%, which chief economist Jan Hatzius classified as the "unconditional long-term average." September's smashing nonfarm payrolls surge of 254,000 and a downward move in the unemployment rate served as a catalyst for the firm to nearly abandon the chance of a contraction. Prior to the report, traders had been betting that the Fed might repeat its 50 basis point — half percentage point — interest rate cut from September before the end of the year. But expectations have swung now, and Goldman concurs with market pricing that the "next few meetings" will see 25 basis point moves. That's about 1.5 percentage points lower than the current level and 2 full percentage points below the pre-September cut.

Lemkau told BI why you shouldn't skimp on sleep or be overly obsessed with your job. As CEO of JPMorgan Wealth Management, Lemkau runs a unit with $1 trillion in client assets and nearly 10,000 employees. She disagrees with Wall Street's "work until you drop" culture that encourages skimping on sleep to get the job done. Lemkau got used to sleeping less in order to balance her career at JPMorgan and raising two children. Lemkau chose sleep and unplugging from technology, aiming for eight hours of sleep a night and not using her phone before bed.

When I first learned I'd be subject to China's infamous 996 hours, I was actually excited. At that point, I'd worked for nearly two years in Guangzhou as an English-Chinese interpreter at a local tech giant. I had this idea that those work hours meant I was on a serious, valuable team and that my productivity mattered. Then, I'd work until 12:30 p.m. when it was time for lunch. My dream is still to make games in China, but I'm not sure if any company could ever entice me to work 996 hours again.

My best friend and I met in high school, and we remained good friends through college. While I embarked on "life-defining" journeys, my friend didn't. But she had sorted hers already, and it didn't feel right to ramble about my shenanigans when she didn't share hers. As I saw her text now, two years later, I wondered if ghosting was the right way to end a 15-year friendship. After observing the same stagnant script of our meetings, I once asked her, "Why don't we have things to talk about?"

Yet, as markets eye a soft landing, potential shocks pose a higher risk to investors, David Kelly says. The firm's chief global strategist says the promise of a soft landing has encouraged Americans to pour into riskier assets at the exact time they shouldn't be. "I will say that although I think this is positive for the equity market, I am getting increasingly queasy about the fact that the equity market keeps on pricing in a soft landing," Kelly told Business Insider. He said that as the market prices in a soft landing, valuations rise, which means any shock to the market could send asset prices tumbling. According to Fed data, the total aggregate wealth of American households grew by about $50 trillion in the last five years.

CNN —Pope Francis has chosen 21 new cardinals in a move that once again shows his determination to reshape the group of churchmen who will elect his successor. Also among the new cardinals announced by the pope on Sunday are bishops from Indonesia, Algeria, Japan and the Ivory Coast. At the time of the pope’s announcement, there were 122 cardinals under 80 and able to vote in a future conclave. Church law technically limits the number of such cardinals to 120, but previous popes have also gone over that number. Cardinals are second only to the pope in the church hierarchy, hold senior positions in the Vatican and act as the pope’s main advisers.
