Installing solar panels can be back-breaking work, so one of the largest renewable energy companies is using robots to do the heavy lifting. AES Corporation on Tuesday introduced "Maximo," an AI-powered robot that can lift solar panels and precisely place them into long rows. The robot will be used to construct the largest solar farm with battery storage in the US, which will help power Amazon's data centers. AES said Maximo can install solar panels twice as fast as humans and at half the cost. AES CorporationLifting 60-pound solar panels repeatedly, in some cases 200 panels a day, in desert heat takes a toll on the body.

Why Americans are snubbing McDonald’s and Starbucks
  + stars: | 2024-07-31 | by ( Allison Morrow | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +4 min
New York CNN —On the surface, it looks like Americans are laying off the Big Macs, booze and even — gasp! On Monday, McDonald’s reported sales fell 0.7% in the US from the same period in 2023. The once reliably cheap McDonald’s pushed its prices up, while sit-down restaurants leaned into value and convenience. Applebee’s, for one, made a direct pitch to the hordes of ticked-off McDonald’s customers who felt the chain had abused its pricing power. Now, McDonald’s is trying to win back poorer customers while appealing to more affluent customers who want something new.

But it can really, really help. To do that, I collect large-scale data in the course of people’s everyday lives … That’s kind of the 100,000-foot view. And I think that’s the kind of thing that doesn’t really stop at any magic threshold. I think people need to think about this more of kind of like a happiness portfolio. And oh, by the way, getting some daily exercise, not living in an environment that’s really polluted, that would be good.

CNN —One major lesson from Vice President Kamala Harris’ sudden ascension to be the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee is that running mates matter. It’s a point not lost on some Republicans who are second-guessing Trump’s selection of Vance and Democrats who are anticipating Harris’ pick any day. Harris’ pick could come within days, according to CNN’s MJ Lee and Jeff Zeleny, who write that the pool of candidates has shrunk by one. Biden went on to pick Harris, the first woman of color to be on a national party’s presidential ticket. In 2016, Trump picked then-Indiana Gov.

“Deadpool & Wolverine” clawed through initial analyst expectations, delivering a monster $211 million jolt to the domestic box office. The film’s massive success pushed Marvel past the $30 billion mark at the global office, making it the highest-grossing franchise of all-time. Meanwhile, the box office success coincided with the Disney-owned studio making buzzy announcements at Comic-Con. And, in a stunning announcement, Robert Downey Jr. emerged onstage as Marvel unveiled the one-time “Iron Man” actor as the franchise’s next big supervillain, Doctor Doom. The sound of Harris laughingTrump, trying out new material to mock Harris, has dubbed his opponent as “Laffin’ Kamala.”“She’s crazy. The magician/comedian Penn Jillette, who spent time with Trump during “The Apprentice” years, has talked about how Trump does not laugh. That’s a recurring theme among Trump supporters – that outrageous claims are clearly jokes. It’s a tactic that so far seems to have backfired, since Harris supporters also like to share clips of her laughing. “Apparently some people love to talk about the way I laugh,” Harris said.

Family offices, the private investment arms of single families, are also shifting to profit shares as a way to better align the incentives of the staff with the family. "Family offices are competing for talent against each other, and against traditional private equity, hedge funds and venture capital." Family offices are increasingly offering lucrative shares of equity and deal profits to staff amid a growing battle for talent, according to a top family office attorney. They often pair co-investments with profit shares to create both upside and potential downside to staff. Because they serve a single family, family offices have more flexibility than many companies when it comes to designing pay plans.

So we don’t know what specifically will happen in the next 100 days until Election Day on November 5, or what could come after, when the country’s unique Electoral College process gets going. December: Electoral votes are castAfter questions about the election are settled, states confirm, or ascertain, their statewide results. Electors gather in their respective state capitols to cast electoral votes for their statewide winner. Nebraska and Maine also allocate some electoral votes by congressional district, and these could be pivotal in a close race. In any event, lawmakers gather on January 6, as everyone should remember from 2020, to count electoral votes.

Editor’s note: A version of this story appeared in CNN’s Wonder Theory science newsletter. But ancient alchemists actually developed technology and discovered chemical elements that are still widely used today. It could also have a major impact on House and Senate races. We talked by email about the state of play for the House and Senate and how the shake-up in the presidential race might change things. Sales of $100 million homes are on track to double this year, as surging financial markets and hopes for rate cuts fuel a recovery in the ultra-luxury real estate market, according to new reports. As of July 15, six homes in the U.S. have sold for more than $100 million, according to data from Miller Samuel and Douglas Elliman. If the sales pace continues, it would more than double last year's total and likely eclipse the record of nine homes sold for over $100 million in 2021. But sales of homes priced at $50 million, $20 million and even $10 million are all signaling a strong rebound for the ultra-luxury real estate market after its decline in 2023. WBD, the parent company of CNN, paid for matching rights when it struck its current deal with the NBA. In doing so, the NBA argued that WBD’s offer was not a legally valid match since it would also be broadcasting the games on TNT. Trees are sucking up just as much, if not more, methane than soil does — the only other known natural sink on Earth. "We've been undervaluing trees for their climate benefits," Vincent Gauci, a professor at the University of Birmingham and the lead author of the study, told Business Insider. Both natural and human-made methane emissions from wetlands, cows, landfills, and burning fossil fuels are on the rise. In a 2017 study, they found that trees in Amazon floodplains emitted more methane than they absorbed. Satellites detect lower methane emissions than what scientists have found on the ground, implying that such "bottom-up" studies either overestimated methane emissions or missed a sink.

In the game of climate change, there are both winners and losers. AdvertisementMany of these climate change "winners" are hardy, fast-breeding scavengers that already live in some of the most degraded habitats on Earth: cities. When it comes to what they eat, they aren't picky, which means they probably don't have to worry about climate change eliminating their food source. If climate change is driving a "ratpocalypse," as some evidence suggests, that could have big consequences for human health. But as climate change raises temperatures and alters precipitation trends, their range is expanding and shifting to new geographic areas.
