1 in 3 children worldwide is now nearsighted, study shows
  + stars: | 2024-09-25 | by ( Jack Guy | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +4 min
Nearsightedness, or myopia, refers to when closer objects are clear, but distant objects are blurry. Nearsightedness is expected to keep rising among children and adolescents. This could be due in part to the fact that East Asian children start formal education at the age of 2 or 3, earlier than kids in other regions, the researchers say. Progression of nearsightedness in children can be slowed by taking breaks and avoiding hour after hour on the phone or computer, he wrote. Limiting up-close reading time outside of school — screen time or otherwise — may help slow the progression of nearsightedness in children, he added.

Engineer Don Kramer is slated to testify as the investigation continues into the implosion of OceanGate's Titan submersible. The Coast Guard opened a public hearing earlier this month that is part of a high level investigation into the cause of the implosion. Coast Guard officials noted at the start of the hearing that the submersible had not been independently reviewed, as is standard practice. Wreckage of the Titan was subsequently found on the ocean floor about 330 yards (300 meters) off the bow of the Titanic, Coast Guard officials said. OceanGate said it has been fully cooperating with the Coast Guard and NTSB investigations since they began.

This June 2024 photo provided by Aleut Community of St. Paul Island Ecosystem Conservation Office shows a rat trap that was placed under a residential building on St. Paul Island, Alaska, after a resident reported an alleged sighting. Rodents have been removed successfully from hundreds of islands worldwide — including one in Alaska’s Aleutian chain formerly known as “Rat Island,” according to the U.S. Around the developed areas of St. Paul, officials have set out blocks of wax — “chew blocks” — designed to record any telltale incisor bites. Still, it took nearly a year to catch the last known rat on St. Paul, which was believed to have hopped off a barge. The success of what was long called Rat Island, a tract in the Aleutians roughly half the size of Manhattan, shows how effective eradication programs can be.

Newly released federal data shows the US tech workforce is younger than the workforce at large and getting younger still. Tech workers under 25 are becoming more common, while the proportion of workers older than 40 shrinks. There's an age-old perception that tech workers should be young so they can move fast and break things. One of the top qualifications to land a tech job, it seems, is to possess a birth certificate dated after 1990. Women make up just 22% of tech workers — the same proportion of jobs they held in 2005.

The hurricane had sustained wind speeds of 120 miles per hour. Storms that form in the Atlantic or the Pacific generally move west, meaning Atlantic storms pose a greater threat to North America. Occasionally, a storm can move farther north, as Hurricane Hilary did last year, bringing damaging winds and intense rain to Southern California. CNN —A rare painting from René Magritte’s famous “L’empire des lumières” series is estimated to sell for more than $95 million at Christie’s New York this fall, a sum that would break the Surrealist artist’s record at auction and represent a major win for the auction house after softened sales across the industry. “L’empire des lumières,” from 1954, is one of the 27 paintings in which Magritte explored light by painting a sunlit sky above a darkened street scene. René Magritte's L'empire des lumières Courtesy of Chrstie’sThe present painting comes from the estate of the late Mica Ertegun, an interior designer who was married to Ahmet Ertegun, a co-founder of Atlantic Records and a prolific art collector. “But of all the works she lived with, Magritte’s ‘L’empire des lumières’ most nearly captures her aesthetic philosophy in its balance and restraint,” Max Carter, Christie’s vice chairman of 20th and 21st century art, said in a statement. Last week, the auction house revealed it is acquiring Gooding & Company, a collector car auctioneer, 17 years after exiting the car market.

A unit of Pennsylvania's Three Mile Island nuclear plant will be restarted as part of a new energy-sharing agreement with Microsoft, which plans to use it to power the data centers it operates as part of its push into artificial intelligence. Today, energy has become the new coin of the realm for companies investing in artificial intelligence. That's because the data centers tasked with running the complex calculations needed to power artificial intelligence applications require enormous amounts of power. Restarting Unit 1 will mean bringing 800 megawatts back onto the grid, greater than the amount of hydroelectric power supplied by the Hoover Dam. Coronary calcium buildup causes atherosclerosis, a chronic and inflammatory cardiovascular disease marked by narrowed arterial walls and thus reduced blood flow. Environmental contaminants have been increasingly recognized as risk factors for cardiovascular disease, but the association of metals with coronary artery calcification has been “largely unknown,” the study authors said. They hypothesized that higher urinary levels of nonessential metals — cadmium, tungsten and uranium — and essential metals — cobalt, copper and zinc — that have previously been associated with cardiovascular disease may be linked with calcification. The participants didn’t already have clinical cardiovascular disease and were recruited from Baltimore; Chicago; Los Angeles; New York City; St. Paul, Minnesota; and Winston Salem, North Carolina.
