Boeing’s stock has fallen nearly 15 percent since Jan. 5, when a door plug flew off a Max 9 during an Alaska Airlines flight shortly after takeoff. The Federal Aviation Administration grounded some Max 9 jets until they were inspected and said it would investigate whether Boeing failed to ensure that the plane was safe. New York CNN —Boeing CEO David Calhoun’s Wednesday was decidedly a mixed bag: The Federal Aviation Administration finally approved a set of inspection criteria for the 171 grounded 737 Max 9 planes that, if followed, could return the aircraft to service. And the FAA said it would not grant any production expansion of the 737 Max lineup while its safety probe of Boeing continues. “We fly safe planes,” Calhoun said to reporters assembled on Capitol Hill. A week earlier, Calhoun acknowledged the company made a “mistake” at a staff-wide safety meeting, but he did not specify what that mistake was. Two Max variants — the Max 7 and the Max 10 — are still awaiting approval to begin carrying passengers.

ILWACO, Wash. (AP) — A fire at a port building along the coast in Washington state destroyed more than 1,000 crab pots just ahead of the state's commercial Dungeness crab season, which opens Feb. 1. The remote area of the fire made it difficult to get enough water supply to fight the blaze, the Ilwaco Fire Department said in a Tuesday statement. About 8,500 crab pots on the deck surrounding the building made fighting the fire even more difficult, officials said. Heather Hall from the Washington State Department of Fish and Wildlife said the agency would do what they could to help crabbers who lost gear. The Washington Department of Ecology helped mitigate any potential environmental concerns from fire debris in the Columbia River on Tuesday.

The New York City Police Department said a girl called to report the incident in Queens' Far Rockaway neighborhood and said "her cousin is killing her family members". The suspect, a 38-year-old, stabbed two police officers who responded to the scene, police told reporters. One of the officers then shot him dead, they added. The four people stabbed to death included a 12-year-old boy, an 11-year-old girl, a 44-year-old woman and a man in his 30s, police said.
