Ed Cassano led the team that recovered the wreckage of the Titan sub. Cassano told a press conference that ocean exploration "was a passion and a joy for exploration." Odysseus 6K was the only ROV that took part in the search effort able to reach the depths of the Titanic wreckage. He said that they had prepared to rescue the Titan sub, but it soon became clear that the passengers could not have survived the journey. "Shortly after we arrived on the seafloor, we discovered the debris of the Titan submersible," he added.

CNN —As the world grapples with the implosion of the Titan submersible, commercial space companies are pressing ahead with plans to offer short hop adventures beyond the skies. Another company, Blue Origin, founded by Jeff Bezos, already has flown several paying customers to suborbital space. Visitors to suborbital space will also experience microgravity and the beautiful view of the Earth from space. The answer is I might have – if I had the financial means and had not already had my NASA spaceflight experiences. The key thing for any would-be passenger planning to board commercial vehicles to space or in the ocean is informed consent.

Stockton RushSubmersible pilot Randy Holt communicates with the support boat as he and Stockton Rush dive in the company's submersible. The loss of the submersible launched a search-and-rescue mission that had the Navy, Coast Guard, and even "Titanic" filmmaker James Cameron involved. The search lasted for five days until the Coast Guard announced on June 22 that the submersible had imploded 1,600 feet away from the Titanic shipwreck. The US Coast Guard has convened a Marine Board of Investigation to look into the cause of the implosion — the highest level of investigation by the organization, according to CNN. In emails between Rush and Stanley after the test, Stanley warned Rush of the dangers of being impatient.

Debris from the lost submersible Titan has been returned to land after a fatal implosion during its voyage to the wreck of the Titanic captured the world's attention last week. Twisted chunks of the 22-foot submersible were unloaded at a Canadian Coast Guard pier on Wednesday. The Coast Guard is leading the investigation into why the submersible imploded during its June 18 descent. Coast Guard representatives declined to comment on the investigation or the return of debris to shore on Wednesday. Representatives for the National Transportation Safety Board and Transportation Safety Board of Canada, which are both involved in the investigation, also declined to comment.

As of June 23, the U.S. Coast Guard said that the agency had not released any photos of the debris field. A separate photo of a pair of shoes shared along with the fabricated images is years old and from the Titanic wreck site, not Titan debris, as explained in a previous Reuters fact check (here). The fabricated debris images surfaced online after a robotic diving vehicle deployed from a Canadian ship discovered a debris field containing pieces of the submersible Titan on the seabed. They were tweeted on June 22 along with the caption: “BREAKING: First look - Imploded Titan titanic submarine implosion debris field.”The user did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The family had been planning a trip on the Titan submersible for some time, Dawood said, but it was postponed by the Covid-19 pandemic. Asked how she felt now about her son taking her place on the submersible, Dawood declined to say. “I really, really miss them.”The Dawoods are from a prominent Pakistani business family.

The US Coast Guard has convened a Marine Board of Investigation to probe the implosion – the “highest level of investigation the Coast Guard conducts,” US Coast Guard chief investigator Capt. Military experts found debris from the ill-fated submersible about 1,600 feet from the bow of the Titanic on Thursday, the US Coast Guard previously said. “This case has been extremely complex, involving a coordinated international, interagency and private sector response in an unforgiving and difficult to access region of the ocean,” US Coast Guard Rear Adm. John Mauger, the First Coast Guard District commander, said Sunday. The Coast Guard announced the vessel suffered a “catastrophic implosion,” killing everyone on board. Submersible experts raised red flags about the Titan's safety long before it imploded. Investigations into the implosion of OceanGate's Titan submersible are likely to examine repeated warnings about the craft's safety and design. Submersible experts raised red flags about the Titan's safety long before it imploded but OceanGate continued its expeditions. "Bringing an outside entity up to speed on every innovation before it is put into real-world testing is anathema to rapid innovation," OceanGate stated. Rush responded and said he was "tired of industry players who try to use a safety argument to stop innovation".

SELF-MADE: Creating Our Identities from da Vinci to the Kardashians, by Tara Isabella BurtonThe Kardashians have sold so much to America — shapewear, cosmetics, beverage upon beverage — why not throw ideas onto the pile? That highly contoured family pulls up like a caboose at the end of Tara Isabella Burton’s “Self-Made,” a fast-moving train of a book that visits a series of individuals in western history who have changed in ways major and minor the way people represent and think of themselves. “Admirers thronged” to Brummell’s house, she recounts, to see an hourslong grooming process that included “exfoliation with a coarse-hair brush, followed by a bath of milk,” and spitting in a special silver bowl. (And you thought Dior’s $40 lip oil was excessive.) A novelist with a doctorate in theology from Oxford who has written widely on travel and religion, including for The New York Times, Burton is a confident conductor on this, an express voyage over several centuries, glossing an international lingo of self-determination: “sprezzatura” and “bon ton” and “Übermensch.”

“The content of those voice recordings could be useful in our investigation,” Fox said. Communications between the submersible and its mother ship will also likely be scrutinized. The ship could communicate with the submersible by text messages, and it’s required to communicate every 15 minutes, according to the archived website of OceanGate Expeditions. The vehicles will work to map out the vessel’s debris field, which is more than 2 miles deep in the North Atlantic, Mauger said. When asked for comment about Stanley’s email, a spokesman for OceanGate told CNN they were unable to provide any additional information at this time.

CNN —A father and son gave up their seats on the ultimately doomed Titan submersible out of safety concerns just weeks before its catastrophic implosion, they have told CNN. Investor Jay Bloom and his son Sean said they were both worried about the submersible and its ability to travel deep into the ocean ahead of the planned voyage. Their seats ultimately went to Shahzada and Suleman Dawood, the father and son who were onboard when the vessel imploded and were among five passengers that perished. I just did not think that it can survive going that low into the ocean,” Sean, 20, told CNN’s Erin Burnett on Friday evening. “All I could see when I saw that father and son was myself and my son, that could’ve been us,” Jay said.

The result was the Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS). Passed in 1914, its framework stands to this day, with many of its rules directly evolving from the Titanic tragedy. The unsinkable ship: When the Titanic set sail from Southampton, it was the world’s largest ocean liner, built with state-of-the-art maritime technology that many thought made it unsinkable. Such was the belief in the Titanic that safety regulations of the day were not updated to keep pace with the technology. Lessons from Titan: Maritime experts and historians have noted the Titan submersible operated outside of the regulations prompted by the Titanic disaster, and did not need to conform to safety regulations, since it operated in international waters.

The company also boasted of collaborations with reputable institutions that have since denied partnering with OceanGate on the submersible in question. The interior of OceanGate's Titan submersible is seen in 2018. It “hasn’t been used in a crewed submersible ever before,” he said in a video last year. OceanGate appears to have also overstated its relationships with two institutions widely respected for their innovation: Boeing and University of Washington. OceanGate had partnered with UW to create a different submersible before parting ways, the university said in a statement.

It's likely too risky to try recovering the remains of Titan's passengers, an ROV expert said. The search for the sub near the Titanic has already cost millions; recovery would cost even more. The five passengers on the Titan sub were British billionaire Hamish Harding, French submersible pilot Paul-Henri Nargeolet, British businessman Shahzada Dawood and his son Suleman, and the CEO of OceanGate Expeditions Stockton Rush. The Titan submersible had made three previous trips down to the wreckage. But shortly after the vessel vanished Sunday, key questions began emerging about the design and operation of the Titan.

He told reporters on Thursday the debris was consistent with "a catastrophic implosion of the vehicle." British Titanic explorer Dik Barton paid tribute to the work of his friend Nargeolet but noted issues raised with the design and maintenance of the craft. "Everyone's wise after the event, but as we're hearing before, unfortunately there were many red flags flying here," he said. He said sonar buoys used in the water for more than three days had not detected an implosion. The Titanic sank after hitting an iceberg on its first voyage, killing more than 1,500 people aboard.

On one vessel, five people died on a very expensive excursion that was supposed to return them to the lives they knew. On the other, perhaps 500 people died just days earlier on a squalid and perilous voyage, fleeing poverty and violence in search of new lives. After contact was lost with the five inside a submersible descending to the Titanic, multiple countries and private entities sent ships, planes and underwater drones to pursue a faint hope of rescue. That was far more effort than was made on behalf of the hundreds aboard a dangerously overcrowded, disabled fishing trawler off the Greek coast while there were still ample chances for rescue. The submersible accident, at the site of a shipwreck that has fascinated the public for more than a century, would have captivated people no matter what.
The next day, Mr. Stanley wrote an email in which he detailed his concerns to Stockton Rush, the chief executive of OceanGate Expeditions, who was also on board the Titan for the dive, urging Mr. Rush to cancel the expeditions to the wreck of the Titanic that were planned for that summer. Would you consider taking dozens of other people to the Titanic before you truly knew the source of those sounds? Rush was piloting the Titan and was among the five people on board who were killed. The Titan’s final voyage would have been its 14th expedition to the Titanic’s wreckage.
