In today’s edition, we break down how panels of undecided voters in Arizona and Pennsylvania responded to the debate. A handful of Arizona voters previously turned off by both Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald expressed interest in the Democratic nominee in an NBC News panel after the debate. All three undecided voters assembled for a similar exercise in the Philadelphia suburbs remained on the fence, with Harris getting a look from two and former President Donald Trump from one. Undecided voters only account for a few percentage points of the electorate right now, according to public polls, with a closely divided country getting behind Trump and Harris. “Finally, we have someone who’s a woman who gets that it’s about us.”But Lewis said Harris didn’t fully seal the deal with her last night. Herr also saw a contrast between how Trump and Harris conducted themselves on the debate stage. After the debate, Navarro said he’s still leaning toward Trump, but Harris has given him more to think about.

Angel Sobolewski doesn’t take political advice from pop stars — not even her favorite, Taylor Swift. Some right-leaning Swift fans had expected those statements. On Wednesday, in an interview with “Fox & Friends,” Trump responded to Swift’s endorsement, saying, “I was not a Taylor Swift fan. The majority of us, however, live in a very different world than Taylor Swift,” the post read in part. Richardson said he’s one of the Swifties genuinely disappointed by Swift’s endorsement of Harris.

“Obamacare was lousy health care. Harris senior adviser David Plouffe promised Wednesday that voters will hear more about Trump’s health care comments. “He promised us a health care plan back in 2015. But he still wants to basically throw tens of millions of people off health care,” Plouffe said on MSNBC. After eight years of threatening to repeal the Affordable Care Act, more commonly known as Obamacare, former President Donald Trump still doesn’t have a comprehensive plan to replace it. People in the U.S. pay roughly twice as much for health care than any other nation on earth. But is it feasible to create a new health care law that reduces the escalating costs? “Right now, Obamacare is the status quo in health care,” said Larry Levitt, executive vice president of health policy at KFF, a nonprofit group that researches health policy issues. Harris has committed to extending the subsidies; Trump has remained silent.

The debate stage clash between Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump drew at least 57.5 million viewers, according to preliminary figures from ABC, the network that hosted the high-stakes match-up. ABC's early viewership estimate represents an improvement over the debate between President Joe Biden and Trump in late June, which attracted roughly 51.3 million people, according to the media analytics company Nielsen. The preliminary data encompasses viewership on just seven networks: ABC, CBS, NBC, Fox, CNN, Fox News and MSNBC. ABC said roughly 17.8 million viewers were adults ages 25 to 54; another roughly 14.8 million viewers were adults ages 18 to 49. Trump's conspiracy-heavy performance prompted concern from his political allies as he attempts to win a second term in the White House.

“Let’s have a good debate,” Harris said. The debate amounted to a missed opportunity for many Trump allies, who hoped that a solid performance would turn the page on Harris' "honeymoon" period. “She failed to meet the moment, with President Trump effectively reflecting the economic anxieties off Americans.”“Kamala’s joy doesn’t pay the grocery bills,” he added. “It is important that transgender individuals who rely on the state for care receive the treatment they need, which includes access to treatment associated with gender transition,” Harris wrote. In an early morning call-in to "Fox and Friends," Trump once again defended his debate performance and predicted Swift would regret her endorsement.

The share price of Trump Media plunged more than 17% on Wednesday morning, a day after majority shareholder Donald Trump gave a widely panned presidential debate performance against Vice President Kamala Harris. Investing in Trump Media stock is often seen as a way to bet on the political fortunes of Trump, the former president and current Republican nominee. Trump Media has said its business hinges at least partly on Trump’s popularity, and analysts say the company’s value will rise or fall based on his electoral prospects. Harris’ team, projecting confidence, challenged Trump to another debate right after the first one ended. Trump Media had surged as much as 10% during trading Tuesday, possibly indicating optimism about how Trump would fare in the debate.

And while Trump tried to tie Harris to President Joe Biden, he learned that she is a much tougher rival. While Trump tried to re-create the conditions of June’s fateful debate stage matchup, Harris reminded him, “You’re not running against Joe Biden. Harris tried to get under Trump’s skin, baiting him into a defensive posture that prevented him from attacking her weaknesses. And when Trump scolded Harris’ attempt to interrupt him, some allies lamented that he lost control at a key moment. Three Republican sources told NBC News after the debate that Trump came off as “angry” in that moment.

Ukraine woke Wednesday to a glaring display of the potentially expanding range — and possible limits — of American support. Hours after former President Donald Trump refused to say whether he wanted the U.S. ally to win the war against Russia, Kyiv welcomed Washington's top diplomat — hoping he will bring a long-awaited shift on its use of long-range weapons. President Joe Biden hinted Tuesday that Kyiv might be about to get what it wants after months of resistance from the White House. Trump was asked twice whether or not he wants Ukraine to win the war, but on both occasions he skirted the question. His response may heighten concerns in Kyiv that a Trump administration would remove U.S. support and seek an end to the war on terms favorable to Russia.

TOKYO — U.S. opponents of a Japanese steelmaker’s $14.9 billion bid for U.S. Steel cite concerns about national security and a reluctance to relinquish a storied American company. That could complicate efforts to strengthen ties with Japan, a key U.S. ally, in an effort to counter China’s growing influence in the Asia-Pacific and around the world. Washington has also been pushing Tokyo to align itself with U.S. export controls that limit China’s ability to produce advanced semiconductors. The opposition to the deal “also places Japan in the unenviable company of China in terms of Washington’s politicization of economic issues,” Kingston said in an email. Other U.S. Steel employees have rallied in support of the deal, which was announced last December.

Harris is expected to attend a service at the Memorial plaza at ground zero in New York City, as is Trump, according to a source familiar with his plans. Harris and Biden — and Trump — will then travel to Shanksville, Pennsylvania, home of the Flight 93 memorial. Tim Walz, is expected to commemorate the 9/11 anniversary in his home state. In 2016, Trump and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton attended a 15th anniversary service, but Clinton departed abruptly and appeared unsteady as she left. Trump, a New York native, did not attend the memorial in 2021, making stops instead at a police station and a firehouse.

The vice president had prepared extensively for their debate, and peppered nearly every answer with a comment designed to enrage the former president. Here are some takeaways from the debate:A turning point when Harris jabs Trump over the size of his rally crowds: Harris came onstage with a clear plan: Throw Trump off his game. When the vice president mentioned Trump’s criminal conviction and outstanding legal issues, he bit. Trump indulges in conspiracy theories: Despite signals from even his running mate, Trump did not refrain from repeating the conspiracy theory du jour during the debate. The pace of inflation likely moderated again in August — further relief for beleaguered consumers still smarting from pandemic-era price shocks. Though price growth has largely returned to the Federal Reserve's official 2% target, the sting of rapid price increases over the past four years lingers for many consumers. The latest inflation report is likely to cement a 0.25% cut in the Federal Reserve's key interest rate, currently at about 5.3%, later this month. But experts say it will take some time for consumers to feel the impact of the lower interest rate — and the relatively small size of the cut means borrowing costs will still be somewhat elevated. While the Fed is now widely expected to cut interest rates, a cut of just 0.25% may not be enough to stave off that scenario.

It wasn’t until Trump’s closing statement that he tried to effectively pin Vice President Kamala Harris to President Joe Biden’s administration. Not only did Trump fail to connect Harris more directly with the Biden years, but so did the questions. And Harris certainly took advantage of every opportunity to turn many of the questions directed at her or the Biden-Harris administration back on Trump. And Harris also benefited because the moderators didn’t always follow up with her when she didn’t answer their questions directly. (Again, Trump didn’t acknowledge any failures in his administration other than the people he fired, and Harris didn’t seem to hug the Biden-Harris record very much.)

Welcome to a post-debate edition of the From the Politics Desk newsletter, breaking down all the action from tonight's showdown between Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump. Vice President Kamala Harris, who took the Democratic nomination when President Joe Biden stepped aside following a catastrophic debate performance in June, delivered aggressive attacks and coherent rebuttals. He declined to answer questions about committing to a second debate, which Harris’ campaign challenged him to do in a statement earlier in the night. “I made that very clear in 2020, I will not ban fracking,” Harris said. He criticized Biden’s handling of classified documents, knocked him for opposing the Keystone XL pipeline and called the Biden’s administration “the most divisive presidency in the history of our country.”Read more from Sahil →More debate night coverageThat’s all from the Politics Desk for now.

PHILADELPHIA — Former President Donald Trump found out Tuesday night that he's got a much tougher rival on his hands now. Harris, eager to portray herself as different from both Trump and Biden, reminded him that Biden won't be on the ballot. Trump said Harris has had 3½ years to make the changes she promises to make and argued the Biden-Harris administration squandered progress Trump gave them. Trump and Harris also clashed over the 2020 election, with Trump again falsely claiming that he won. Throughout the debate, Harris needled Trump in ways that undermined his self-image as a popular, strong leader whom American’s adversaries fear.

Pop superstar Taylor Swift endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris' presidential candidacy on Tuesday night after the high-stakes debate with former President Donald Trump, calling the Democratic nominee a "steady-handed, gifted leader." "I will be casting my vote for Kamala Harris and Tim Walz in the 2024 Presidential Election," Swift said in a post on Instagram to her more than 283 million followers. Swift's endorsement came as a surprise to the Harris campaign, two campaign officials told NBC News. Swift threw her support behind President Joe Biden and Harris during the 2020 presidential election. In the Instagram post, Swift also criticized social media users who have circulated images generated by artificial intelligence falsely stating that she had endorsed the Trump-Vance ticket.

Former President Donald Trump said he would not sign a federal abortion ban Tuesday night during a presidential debate with Vice President Kamala Harris, saying he did not think it would be needed. “Democrats, Republicans and everybody else, and every legal scholar, wanted it to be brought back into the states,” Trump said. Harris responded by saying women in states that cracked down on abortion after Roe v. Wade was overturned have faced nightmare scenarios. Abortion has been a politically dominant issue since Roe v. Wade was overturned in 2022, and throughout the race, it has been a tricky one for Trump to navigate. I’ve disagreed with that right from the early primaries when I heard about it,” Trump said last month.

Trump went on to repeat false claims that there was "so much proof" that he won the election. And he dodged when asked about whether he had any regrets about his actions on Jan. 6. Other Jan. 6 defendants continue to maintain their belief in Trump's election lies. Trump's inability to acknowledge the reality of his 2020 election loss, Harris said, raises questions about Trump's "temperament" and his "ability to not be confused about fact," calling it "deeply troubling." Trump, who has called Jan. 6 defendants "hostages" and "unbelievable patriots" and has said he'll pardon "a large portion" of Jan. 6 defendants, said Tuesday that Capitol riot defendants had been "treated so badly."

Former President Donald Trump, during Tuesday’s presidential debate, pushed the baseless claim about Haitian immigrants in Ohio eating dogs and other pets. "They're eating the pets of the people that live there, and this is what's happening in our country, and it's a shame."
