Artificial intelligence is set to give the global data center market a major boost, according to Jefferies, and usher in a "new era of electricity demand." "As GPUs [graphics processing units] have become a larger part of the data center ecosystem and drive AI investments, demand for power and data center space has grown at a feverish pace," the investment bank's analysts wrote in a June 18 note. They noted that demand for data center space has increased between 10% and 20% each year for most of the past 15 years. As the data center market grows, so will demand for electricity, Jefferies said, naming a slew of beneficiaries in these segments and beyond. Home prices set another record in April, even as mortgage rates rose and the supply of homes for sale increased. Usually, under those circumstances, prices would weaken, but today's housing market is unlike any other in recent history. The housing cost burden has hit a record, according to a new report from Harvard's Joint Center for Housing Studies. Housing supply was already low before the Covid pandemic hit, because homebuilders had yet to recover from the 2008 financial crisis. Then there was a pandemic-induced run on housing, causing supply to drop to record lows for several years.

DETROIT – U.S. auto sales through the first half of the year are expected to be up by 2.9% compared to a year ago, but there are concerns that the auto industry may not be able to continue the momentum during the last six months of the year. Vehicle inventory levels are growing, incentives are increasing and there's growing uncertainty during the second half of the year surrounding the economy, interest rates and U.S. presidential election, according to Cox Automotive. The auto data and research firm expects sales growth to slow during the second half of the year to end 2024 at 15.7 million units, roughly a 1.3% increase compared to 2023. And, unlike in recent years, growth is coming from commercial sales compared to more profitable sales to consumers.

☆ College dropouts raise $120 million to take on Nvidia's AI chips

A 2-year-old startup founded by Harvard dropouts has just raised $120 million in venture funding to try and build a competitive chip and take on Nvidia in artificial intelligence. Co-founder and CEO Gavin Uberti said that as AI develops, most of the technology's power-hungry computing requirements will be filled by customized, hard-wired chips called ASICs. "We're making the biggest bet in AI," Uberti said in an interview. Other chip startups taking on Nvidia include Cerebras Systems, which is building a physically larger AI chip, and Tenstorrent, which is using a trendy technology called RISC-V to build AI chips. Venture capitalists invested $6 billion in AI semiconductor companies in 2023, up slightly from $5.7 billion in 2022, according to data from PitchBook.

"Mobile traffic is growing more and more every day," Katsuhiko Kawazoe, chair of the IOWN Global Forum, told CNBC via email. "Data centers are becoming bigger and bigger, and hyperscale data centers are a struggle for societies' carbon reductions," Kawashima said. "To deploy antennas, we need optical fiber to connect antennas to radio data centers," Kawashima explained. For now, the IOWN Global Forum is working toward achieving its main goals by 2030.
