A rising reason is a patient’s desire to align anatomy with lived gender. But hysterectomies are typically not emergency surgeries — meaning patients have time to ask questions and weigh all their options. To make sure you know exactly what you’re agreeing to, here are five questions to ask your doctor. Can you go over the reproductive organs and explain which ones you will be removing? For instance, “total laparoscopic hysterectomy with bilateral salpingectomy” becomes “removal of the uterus, cervix, and fallopian tubes, leaving the ovaries behind.”

AdvertisementI'm a private chef, and I compared croissants at Key Food, Trader Joe's, and Whole Foods. Key Food sold the biggest croissant, but the inside looked more like bread than pastry. I like Trader Joe's offering, but Whole Foods' pastry was the closest to a fresh croissant. As a private chef, I know croissants are a highly technical pastry that requires a lot of time and effort. Here's how the bakery-section croissants at Key Food, Whole Foods, and Trader Joe's stack up.

Russian and Syrian fighter jets struck targets across territory seized by rebels in northwestern Syria on Monday, according to Syrian state media and the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights. The forceful response made clear that Russia, one of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad’s staunchest allies, intended to keep supporting him in the face of a sudden rebel advance. It is not yet clear whether they will be able to help hold off the rebels. On the other side, the rebels’ startling gains appeared to embolden the opposition in exile, with one of its leaders demanding on Monday that Mr. al-Assad commit to a political transition. The opposition leader, Hadi al-Bahra, spoke from Turkey as rebels continued their advance through Aleppo, once Syria’s largest city, and the surrounding areas.

Stacia Alexander was 25 and pregnant when her OB-GYN first recommended a hysterectomy. It was 1996, and an ultrasound had revealed fibroids growing in the walls of her uterus. But she knew what the procedure had done to her mother: After her ovaries and uterus were removed in her 40s, her mother faded into a sad, irritable shadow of herself. So after giving birth, Dr. Alexander opted for surgery to prune back the fibroids. But by the time she was 45, the fibroids were back, and her doctor informed her that she was “too old” for another uterus-sparing surgery.

Opinion | How Do You Like That Filibuster Now?
  + stars: | 2024-12-02 | by ( Michelle Cottle | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
As Republicans prepare to take control of both chambers of Congress and the presidency, Senator Joe Manchin, the conservative West Virginia Democrat turned independent, has a question for his former Democratic teammates: “How do you like that filibuster now?”Mr. Manchin is feeling sassy these days. His ex-party just got its clock cleaned and is facing two years, minimum, in the political wilderness. And, no surprise, as Mr. Manchin prepares to retire in January, he has plenty of thoughts on preserving the Senate’s role as an independent power center — a mission that feels especially vital with Donald Trump’s return to Washington. Love him or loath him, Mr. Manchin is worth a listen as a man who understands how to use power whether you’re in the minority or the majority in the Senate. And at age 77, with more than four decades in politics, he takes the long view — a healthy mind-set for discouraged Democrats.

‘Brain rot’ is Oxford’s word of the year
  + stars: | 2024-12-02 | by ( Rosa Rahimi | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +3 min
“Brain rot” took the title in a vote in which more than 37,000 people participated, as well as public commentary and analysis of OUP’s language data. “While England endeavours to cure the potato rot,” wrote Thoreau, “will not any endeavour to cure the brain-rot – which prevails so much more widely and fatally?”All these years later, it seems brain rot is well and truly established. “’Brain rot’ speaks to one of the perceived dangers of virtual life, and how we are using our free time,” said Casper Grathwohl, president of Oxford Languages, in Monday’s announcement. “I also find it fascinating that the word ‘brain rot’ has been adopted by Gen Z and Gen Alpha… These communities have amplified the expression through social media channels, the very place said to cause ‘brain rot,’” he added. The word, which means being reserved in appearance or behavior, had already been named word of the year by Dictionary.com last week.

CNN —Australian police seized the country’s largest haul of cocaine aboard a fishing boat that had broken down near the coast of Queensland, arresting 13 people alleged to be part of a drug-smuggling syndicate. Authorities tracked a recreational fishing boat as it traveled out to sea where it allegedly met a mothership in international waters to fetch the cocaine – some 2.34 metric tons with a street value of nearly half a billion dollars. Police seized their chance to board the boat, arresting two men at sea in a joint investigation between federal and local forces. Police found 2.34 metric tons of cocaine wrapped in bales with roped netting around them on a recreational fishing vessel. Among the haul was 225 metric tons of cocaine, 5 tons of which was found aboard a semi-submersible vessel plying a marine trafficking route from Colombia to Australia, according to the Colombian Navy.

The stock market rally showed no signs of slowing down last month, but investors may want to keep their expectations in check as the calendar turns over to 2025. The Dow Jones Industrial Average and S & P 500 each finished November at record highs, gaining 7.5% and 5.7%, respectively, in the month. But Deutsche Bank macro strategist Henry Allen said in a note to clients out Monday that the market won't have the benefit of low expectations in 2025. Economists expect 2.1% economic growth next year for the U.S., up from a 1.2% expectation heading into 2025, Allen said, citing Bloomberg data. "With growth repeatedly surprising on the upside, that's raised expectations," Allen said.

Annual prices rose 3.7% in November, and rose 1.2% on a monthly basis, Nationwide said. Other measures of Britain's housing market have also shown momentum picking up. Figures from the Bank of England last week showed lenders approved the most mortgages for house purchases since August 2022. President Biden arrived on Monday in Cape Verde, an island nation off the coast of Africa, for the first stop of the only trip to sub-Saharan Africa of his presidency, a journey shadowed by his decision to pardon his son of tax and gun convictions. Air Force One touched down for refueling at Amílcar Cabral International Airport on the island of Sal on a bright, sunny morning, before continuing on to Angola, where the president will work to bolster American ties. While waiting for the plane to be readied for the next leg of the flight, Mr. Biden met at an airport lounge with Ulisses Correia e Silva, the prime minister of Cabo Verde. The president is scheduled to arrive by evening in Luanda, the Angolan capital, where he will visit a slavery museum and highlight a new $1 billion rail corridor as a primary example of his administration’s plan to help lift the region’s economy.
