CNN —Scientists in Western Australia have found a tree frog which is bright blue, rather than the usual green, due to a rare genetic mutation. This is the first time a blue color mutation has been recorded in the magnificent tree frog, according to AWC. “Very occasionally, a green frog is missing yellow pigment in its skin, and it results in an entirely or mostly blue frog,” she said in the statement. “I’ve seen tens of thousands of frogs over the years, and only seen one blue frog - and it was nowhere near as spectacular as this magnificent tree frog. That’s the great thing about working in the Kimberley – you never know what rare wildlife you’re going to see each day.”

CNN —A piece of woolly mammoth skin excavated from the Siberian permafrost has been found to contain fossil chromosomes in a first-of-its-kind discovery, according to a new study. The new study revealed that fossils of ancient chromosomes survive in this skin sample. But the DNA from elephants was also needed to assemble the mammoth genome. The researchers hope to use the findings to assemble the woolly mammoth genome completely. “This structural information provides insights into functions of the woolly mammoth genome that were invisible using previous genomic methods,” Heintzman said in an email.

From under a parking lot in the center of Berlin, a team of archaeologists unearthed ancient human skeletons of nearly 4,000 forgotten dead from a bygone church cemetery paved over by a former Communist regime. In that time, scientists plumbed information from inside bones — some older than 1160 — and in between ancient teeth. They made startling discoveries, including that the city was inhabited nearly a century earlier than believed. But bones hold only so many secrets. The quarter-plate daguerreotype of former First Lady Dolley Madison, wife of fourth US president James Madison, dates from around 1846. The Dolley Madison daguerreotype, made by artist and entrepreneur John Plumbe Jr., shows the trailblazing First Lady when she was in her late seventies. In addition to his portrait of Madison, he created the earliest extant image of the US Capitol. CNN —Visitors to Copenhagen who engage in environmentally-friendly activities such as litter picking or traveling on public transport could be rewarded with free food, cultural experiences and tours as part of a new pilot program. The CopenPay trial scheme, which runs between July 15 and August 11, involves “transforming green actions into currency for cultural experiences,” the Danish capital’s tourism authority Visit Copenhagen, also known as Wonderful Copenhagen, said in a statement Monday. This includes complimentary guided museum tours, free kayak rentals, and even a free vegetarian lunch made from local crops,” the Wonderful Copenhagen statement added. The Avro Arrow, also known as the CF-105, had a lot resting on its wings. To this day, 65 years later, the Avro Arrow remains one of Canada’s biggest collective regrets and still fuels public discourse, as recently unveiled documents have shed some light on exactly what happened to the doomed project. As a result, thousands of jobs were lost and Avro Canada eventually collapsed entirely. Another says Canadian intelligence analysts deliberately misconstrued information to support a decision that the government had essentially made, providing an excuse for it. “They decided they wanted a big new fancy plane, so they came up with all the operational requirements largely in isolation, without really paying attention to what the reports were saying.”By the late 1950s, he adds, the Arrow arrow was getting very expensive and quite delayed.

At a time when overwhelmed European destinations are slapping tourists with restrictions and fees, Copenhagen is trying a different approach: rewarding visitors who act responsibly. Beginning July 15, tourists who demonstrate climate-friendly travel behavior by participating in the city’s green initiatives — including cycling, train travel and clean-up efforts — will be granted access to museum tours, kayak rentals, free meals and more. “We must turn tourism from being an environmental burden into a force for positive change,” said Mikkel Aarø-Hansen, the chief executive of Wonderful Copenhagen, the tourism organization for the Capital Region of Denmark. CNN —After going missing for more than 50 years, a firearm dating back to the Revolutionary War has been recovered and donated to a Philadelphia museum, the FBI says. “This historic weapon from the American Revolution was taken and hidden from generations of Americans. The artifact was among several Revolutionary War-era items taken during a string of thefts that occurred in the 1960s and 1970s in the area of Valley Forge Park. However, 10 of the items looted from Valley Forge Park and other locations, including the recently returned musket, remained lost. The company donated it to the Museum of the American Revolution, signing over the deed at the July 1 ceremony,” according to a release.

The items repatriated from New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art arrived Wednesday and were displayed to journalists and VIPs on Thursday at the National Museum in the Cambodian capital, Phnom Penh. Fourteen rare Angkor era sculptures tied to a controversial art dealer and collector were returned to Cambodia from New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art earlier this week. Cambodia claims that other items illegally trafficked from the country are still at the Metropolitan Museum, as well as at other museums and in the hands of private collectors. Plans to build an outpost of the Pompidou Center in the heart of Jersey City were put on hold after the State Legislature voted last week to rescind $24 million in funding for the Paris museum’s project. Another $34 million in state and federal assistance for what would have been the Pompidou’s first satellite location in North America was also put in jeopardy by the vote. Tim Sullivan, chief executive of the New Jersey Economic Development Authority, addressed a letter to museum officials saying that the project was called off. “Due to the ongoing impact of Covid and multiple global conflicts on the supply chain, rising costs, an irreconcilable operating gap and the corresponding financial burdens it will create for New Jersey’s taxpayers, the Legislature has rescinded financial support,” Mr. Sullivan wrote, “leaving us to determine that this project is unfortunately no longer feasible.”
