BRISBANE, Aug 6 (Reuters) - England's Sarina Wiegman is the lone female head coach remaining at the Women's World Cup after the elimination of South Africa on Sunday, which could bode well for the Lionesses Down Under if history has a hand in it. Twelve of the World Cup's 32 head coaches were women, including Desiree Ellis, whose Banyana Banyana were ousted in a 2-0 loss to the Netherlands in the round of 16. Since 2000, all but one of the major women's football tournaments – the Women's World Cup, Women's Euros and the Olympics – have been won by female-coached teams, according to the Female Coaching Network. Norio Sasaki, the man who coached Japan to World Cup gold in 2011, is the sole exception. Wiegman, whose European champions play Nigeria in the round of 16 on Monday, took over as Lionesses head coach in September 2021, and her squad went on a 30-game unbeaten streak that included just five draws.

While financial markets on Wednesday took a break from their monster rally of 2023, economists largely expect the impact on the economy to be minimal. Some even questioned the timing of Fitch's action, saying it seems to come after the biggest scare to whether the U.S. would meet its debt obligations has passed. Overall, this announcement is much more likely to be dismissed than have a lasting disruptive impact on the US #economy and #markets." It also cited the battles that warring congressional factions have had over the debt ceiling as well as budget standoffs. Goldman also said it does not see a meaningful impact on holders of Treasurys or other government-sponsored or municipal debt.

Three of the six central banks overseeing the 10 most heavily traded currencies that met in July hiked rates, while the other three kept their benchmarks unchanged, Reuters data showed. "Chile announced a larger-than-expected rate cut, and is the first emerging market to jump on the easing bandwagon in the current cycle," said Charu Chanana, market strategist at Saxo. Twelve out of 18 central banks in the Reuters sample of developing economies had interest rate setting meetings in July. However, nine central banks opted to keep policy unchanged, with rate hikes coming from Turkey and Russia - two countries whose monetary policy circles are determined by domestic dynamics rather than global trends. On the rate cutting side, emerging market central banks have seen three cuts reducing interest rates by 160 bps in total.

Pirelli gets new board after battle over Chinese influence
  + stars: | 2023-07-31 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +2 min
MILAN, July 31 (Reuters) - Pirelli (PIRC.MI) investors on Monday approved a new board for the tyremaker, giving it a new three-year governance set-up after the Italian government last month took steps to curb the influence of the company's leading Chinese investor. Andrea Casaluci, previously General Manager Operations, has been promoted to CEO, Pirelli said in a statement. Pirelli's new chairman is Jiao Jian, the chief executive of leading shareholder Sinochem (600500.SS), the state-owned Chinese group. The intervention strengthened the influence of Camfin even though it has a smaller stake than Sinochem in the company, the tyre supplier for Formula One motor racing. As part of the measures, Camfin retained the power to designate Pirelli's CEO and set strategies, with limited power for Sinochem to influence the group's management.

1,200 Pratt & Whitney engines on Airbus A320neo jets will need to be removed for inspection. JetBlue, Spirit Airlines, and Wizz Air are among the airlines to be impacted. The company said a "rare condition" contaminated the powder metal used to make "certain engine parts" and it could cause cracks to form on critical engine parts, per The Wall Street Journal. Those Pratt & Whitney engines are used on about 40% of the twin-engine Airbus A320neo jets, per the Journal. An Airbus spokesperson said the company is working with its customers and Pratt & Whitney to minimize the disruption and implement the required inspection plans.

July 26 (Reuters) - Canada's Imperial Oil (IMO.TO) spilled crude oil into a process-water lagoon at its Mahihkan plant in northern Alberta, contaminating a flock of geese, the Alberta Energy Regulator (AER) said on Wednesday. The spill of around six barrels of oil, which took place on Monday, is the latest environmental lapse by the oil sands company. Earlier this year it emerged that toxic tailings water had been seeping for months from Imperial's Kearl mine, and a second separate leak occurred in February. Twelve Canada geese became smeared with oil after landing on the lagoon, the AER said in an incident report on its website. In the last week a dead frog and two dead minnows were found near the seepage site and were collected for additional testing, Imperial said.

Norway government ministries hit by cyber attack

OSLO, July 24 (Reuters) - Twelve Norwegian government ministries have been hit by a cyber attack, the Norwegian government said on Monday, the latest attack to hit the public sector of Europe's largest gas supplier and NATO's northernmost member. That weakness has now been shut," Erik Hope, head of the government agency in charge of providing services to ministries, told a news conference. The attack was identified due to "unusual" traffic on the supplier's platform, Hope said, declining to provide specifics. Norway is Europe's largest gas supplier after a drop in Russian gas flows and Western Europe's largest oil exporter. Norway's state sector has been hit by cyber attacks previously, including in June 2022, when a so-called distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attack took place, blamed on a "criminal pro-Russian group".

Companies Tesla Inc FollowJuly 21 (Reuters) - A federal appeals court on Friday said it will reconsider its recent decision that Tesla (TSLA.O) Chief Executive Elon Musk violated federal labor law by tweeting that employees would lose stock options if they joined a union. Circuit Court of Appeals in New Orleans granted Tesla's request to revisit the case "en banc," meaning that its 16 active judges will take part. Musk issued the tweet as the United Auto Workers sought to organize employees at Tesla's plant in Fremont, California. "But why pay union dues & give up stock options for nothing?"
