CNN —At one point last year, tennis player Sumit Nagal had less than $1,000 in his bank account. After defeating Kazakhstan’s Alexander Bublik on Tuesday, Nagal became the first Indian man to win a match at the Australian Open in 11 years, pocketing $118,000 ($180,000 Australian dollars) in the process. “There was a time where we had a lot of singles players playing in the slams,” he said. BERLIN (AP) — Heavy snowfalls and freezing rain across Germany Wednesday led to the cancellation of hundreds of flights and trains, crashes on icy roads, and school closures. At Frankfurt airport, Germany's biggest, more than 500 flights were canceled, while in Munich over 250 arrivals and departures were canceled. In western Germany, Saarbruecken airport closed for the day, as Duesseldorf and Cologne/Bonn airports were also affected by delays and cancelations. The freezing rain across western and southern Germany also led to countless crashes on icy roads in the early morning hours of Wednesday. As a precaution, many schools and kindergartens in the country closed for the day, and some companies offered their employees the option of working from home.

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — The U.S. Forest Service on Wednesday withdrew its approval of a right-of-way permit that would have allowed the construction of a railroad project through about 12 miles (19 kilometers) of roadless, protected forest in northeastern Utah. It would allow them to access larger markets and ultimately sell to refineries near the Gulf of Mexico. An attempt to reach the Seven County Infrastructure Coalition, which is spearheading the project, was unsuccessful Wednesday evening. In the August ruling, the Washington, D.C.-based appeals court decided that a 2021 environmental impact statement and opinion from the federal Surface Transportation Board were rushed and violated federal laws. The Forest Service's decision Wednesday to withdraw its approval was based on the appeals court ruling, but Ashley National Forest Supervisor Susan Eickhoff said the agency could issue a new decision if deficiencies in the environmental impact statement are addressed.

Why is Donald Trump continuing to poll so strongly with voters? As unpalatable as a second Trump term would be, many pundits who tackle this question have ignored a striking fact: The typical household’s living standard improved during the three Trump years before the pandemic. The old saw that Mussolini got the trains to run on time should not be understood as an endorsement. But it is one thing to loathe Mr. Trump and hope for his defeat. The leitmotif in such arguments is that blue voters are rational political actors voting on merit while Trump is appealing primarily, if not exclusively, to irrational semi-citizens devoid of even self-interested calculation.

(Reuters) - Flight and train services were disrupted in India's capital New Delhi for the second day running on Monday, as dense fog and cold enveloped large swathes of the northern part of the country. More than 100 flights were delayed in Delhi on Sunday, but intermittent flight operations had resumed on Monday morning, said an airport official who declined to be named. According to aviation website Flightradar24, at least 168 flights leaving Delhi were delayed and 56 flights were cancelled on Monday morning. At least 18 trains to Delhi from different parts of the country were running late because of dense fog, news agency ANI, in which Reuters has a minority stake, said on X, citing a railway document. The country's weather office has predicted dense fog and a cold wave in New Delhi for Monday and 'very dense fog' on Tuesday, with a minimum temperature of 4 degrees Celsius (39.2 Fahrenheit).

It was the latest difficult episode for New York’s subway system, in many ways the backbone of the city, which has struggled in the early going of 2024. Already this year, there have been two train derailments, one of which injured 26 people and led to significant service disruptions for days. And last week, a teenage boy was killed in what authorities said was a “subway surfing” incident, in which thrill-seekers ride atop cars. Shootings on subway trains are rare and make up a fraction of the city’s overall gun crime. In November, two people were shot on a moving subway car in the Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood of Brooklyn.

The small Swiss Alpine town is again playing host to the World Economic Forum (WEF), where the world's top brass in finance and politics convene each year to try to solve the biggest problems that plague our planet. But the long and winding road to Davos offers another lesser-known benefit, which makes the lengthier commute well worth the while. Here's what was overheard on the connecting trains from Zurich Airport to Davos Platz. OpenAI's media representative declined CNBC's request to interview Altman in Davos, citing a "tight" schedule. One Davos attendee noted their company was in the IP space and had just raised this summer, because "the rights issue is so complicated."

Lobster used to be served as prison food and used as fish bait. Here's how some savvy marketing schemes in the 1800s and 1900s gave lobster, calamari, and Chilean sea bass the glow-ups they needed to become so loved. But the name "toothfish" wasn't very marketable, so Lantz gave it a much more exclusive-sounding name: the Chilean sea bass — and Americans ate it right up. After years of delays and safety and design disputes, Amtrak is one step closer to bringing new high-speed trains to the busy Northeast Corridor. Amtrak officials said late Friday that the new trains, which had failed an extended series of computer modeling tests, had passed on the 14th try and had been cleared by the Federal Railroad Administration to begin testing on the tracks that run from Washington, D.C., to Boston. The faster, more spacious trains — sets of locomotives plus passenger cars — come with a price tag of about $1.6 billion and are to replace those in the Acela fleet, which should have been decommissioned at the end of their life cycle in 2016. The sleek new red, white and blue Avelia Liberty trains are to travel at a max speed of about 160 miles per hour because of a limit imposed by the northeast corridor’s aging tracks, 10 miles faster than the current Acela trains, and are expected to tilt for a faster and smoother ride around curves. They accommodate up to 386 passengers, an increase of 25 percent.

What We Learned From Bogotá’s Buses
  + stars: | 2024-01-11 | by ( Michael Kimmelman | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
The system, a rapid bus network called TransMilenio, rolled out in 2000. Its buses weren’t as big or as fast as trains, but they were up and running in a fraction of the time and at a vastly lower cost. The idea of rapid buses became the rage from Jakarta to Mexico City, and Enrique Peñalosa, the Bogotá mayor who cooked up the idea for TransMilenio, became a globe-trotting celebrity after his term ended. But there was another colorful character whose contributions to TransMilenio I had to leave on the cutting room floor. (He explained the dropping of his pants by citing the French sociologist Pierre Bourdieu’s concept of “symbolic violence.”)

Why America's Electric Car Push Isn't Working
  + stars: | 2024-01-03 | by ( Paris Marx | ) www.businessinsider.com   time to read: +12 min
Electric vehicles were supposed to be inevitable. Auto execs who were once trumpeting the potential of electric cars are even publicly acknowledging that EVs aren't working . In September, 87% of new-vehicle sales were fully electric vehicles. Plus, heavier electric vehicles are harder on roads, produce more air pollution, and pose a greater safety risk for pedestrians. Time for a rethinkThe shift from gas-powered cars to electric vehicles is an opportunity to rethink how Americans get from place to place.
