For Felisha Robinson, it was the scene in the biopic “What’s Love Got to Do With It” in which Tina Turner runs across the highway, face bloodied from having been beaten by her then-husband and performing partner, Ike Turner, to escape her abusive marriage with nothing but 36 cents and a Mobil card in her pocket. As Robinson, 42, was getting out of her own abusive marriage in 2020, she found herself gravitating toward the 1993 film that made waves around the world for starkly depicting the violence Tina Turner had endured. She had watched it when she was younger, but felt she now understood all that it took for Turner get there. Looking back at the singer’s interviews, books and songs helped Robinson process her own experience. “The desperation that was in her, like, ‘I have got to get out of this situation.

China was reopening after nearly three years of pandemic lockdowns, and investors expected that its economy, the world’s second-largest, would come roaring back to life. Chinese stocks soared. This week, Chinese stocks that are traded in Hong Kong sank briefly into a bear market, after losing more than 20 percent of their value from a high in January. Despite the continuing geopolitical tensions between China and the United States, the economic and business ties between the two countries remain intricately linked. “All the signals from China are pointing to a bumpy, faltering economic rebound,” said Tina Teng, an analyst with CMC Markets in Auckland, New Zealand.

U.S. Federal Reserve officials on Wednesday suggested interest rates could be kept on hold this month and the U.S. House of Representatives passed a bill suspending the government's debt ceiling, improving the chance of averting a disastrous default. "Oil markets may have been oversold in the last two trading days," said CMC Markets analyst Tina Teng. "Sentiment rebounded amid the debt bill's passage in the House and (the) Fed's rate hike pause signal." Mixed demand indications from China, the world's biggest oil importer, have nonetheless weighed on the market, as has industry data showing a rise in U.S. crude inventories. Market sources citing American Petroleum Institute (API) figures on Wednesday said that U.S. crude inventories rose by about 5.2 million barrels last week.

BEIJING, June 1 (Reuters) - Oil prices rose on Thursday, reversing earlier losses, as a potential pause in U.S. interest rate hikes and the debt ceiling bill passing a crucial vote renewed optimism about further fuel demand growth in the world's biggest oil consumer. U.S. Federal Reserve officials on Wednesday pointed towards a potential rate hike "skip" in June that reversed market expectations of an imminent hike that could slow economic growth and weaken oil demand. "Oil markets may have been oversold in the last two trading days due to the sluggish Chinese data and debt ceiling concerns. Sentiment rebounded amid the debt bill’s passage in the House, and (the) Fed’s rate hike pause signal also offered a rebounding opportunity," said Tina Teng, a markets analyst at CMC Markets in Auckland. CNN —Three teenagers have been arrested in connection with killing and “consuming” a beloved swan in a Syracuse, New York, suburb, and stealing four young swans this week, police said. A mature female swan named Faye and her four young swans, also known as cygnets, were reported missing from the swan pond Monday, police in the village of Manlius said. The three friends, who attend the same high school, hopped over the fence surrounding the swan pond in the middle of the night, Hatter said. We will continue to have swans,” Whorrall said. The swans have been in Manlius since 1905, according to Whorrall, and the village cares for and feeds them.

She applied and was accepted to the online program in 2020. In exchange for expanding course offerings and recruiting students, OPMs receive a big chunk of the tuition revenue from the online programs, which usually cost the same as in-person schooling. While it's not always the case, many experts and grads told me that OPMs were offering online students a worse education for a sky-high price. A third-party provider to those schools, 2U signs a contract to offer services such as recruiting and technology to boost online enrollment. But beyond scandals, the everyday business of OPMs is leaving many online students with exorbitant bills, despite how cheap it is to administer the courses.

Satter strips the political context from that first F.B.I. Working from the official transcript, Satter finds that the young woman is primarily concerned with the safety of her pets.

Companies Baker Hughes Co FollowSINGAPORE, May 29 (Reuters) - Oil prices rose on Monday after U.S. leaders reached a tentative debt ceiling deal, possibly averting a default in the world's largest economy and oil consumer, although concerns about further interest rate hikes capped gains. "The tentative debt deal offered a relief rally in risk assets, including crude oil," said Tina Teng, a CMC Markets analyst. Analysts see the boost in oil prices from the debt deal as short-lived. "Higher U.S. rates are a headwind for crude oil demand," he added. Future oil output growth in the U.S., the world's biggest producer, also may slow as energy firms cut rigs for a fourth week.

Ms. Ewing lost touch, but she admired Ms. Turner’s resilience, particularly as she clawed her way back from her abusive relationship with Ike Turner. “Knowing you can have calamities but if you’re strong enough, strong-minded and have a strong will, you can make it to the top of the hill,” she said. Pam Stephens, a resident who attended the memorial, often cautions outsiders who know of the community only from “Nutbush City Limits” to temper their expectations. “There’s not even a stop sign,” she said, “unless you pull off the main road.”But the Tina Turner Museum, at her childhood schoolhouse, has given visitors another reason to exit the interstate. The refurbished white wooden building is filled with artifacts that Ms. Turner personally sent for display.

Led Zeppelin and the Rolling Stones got the treatment, too, and so did “Louie Louie,” with a sultry, little-known rendition which — I’m not even making this up — louielouie.net (“The blog for all things Louie Louie”) called “one of the essential Louie Louie recordings!” with some all-caps emphasis. Tina Turner was a seismic, once-in-a-lifetime musical force, but I don’t need to tell you that; I’ll let this playlist do the talking. And I’ll let my colleague Wesley Morris, who wrote an appraisal worthy of the queen, do some of it too: “They’re saying she was 83? It shot from her — from her feet, thighs, hands, arms, shoulders, out of her hair, out of her mouth.”Listen along on Spotify as you read. “Gimme, gimme, gimme a honky tonk man.” (Listen on YouTube)

As newspapers reported on it, Elon Musk decided to claim it was "the top story on Earth." But this was the same day Tina Turner died, and DeSantis wasn't mentioned on most front pages. Elon Musk claimed that Ron DeSantis' glitchy presidential announcement on Twitter Spaces was "the top story on Earth" on Wednesday. US Google was dominated by "Tina Turner" with 5 million searches, followed by a rise in Nvidia shares, a PlayStation showcase, and Krispy Kreme donuts. On Wednesday — the day Musk claimed it was the biggest story in the whole world — Turner was well ahead at top spot.

He is the author of “Lincoln and the Fight for Peace.” The views expressed in this essay are his own. These celebrated writers were the subject of long-form profiles and occasional tabloid scandals, treated as cerebral rock stars and voices of their generation. They were a post-punk crew that migrated from the UK to the US, including Hitchens, Tina Brown and Salman Rushdie. In his final book, “Inside Story,” part memoir and part novel, Amis returned to his friendship with Hitchens in the 1970s, prior to their becoming famous. It chronicles a doomed affair, flashing forward at times to the decline of their friend Saul Bellows from dementia, as well as Hitchens’ death.

CNN —US authorities have charged a man in connection with the theft of a pair of ruby red slippers worn by actress Judy Garland as Dorothy in the 1939 classic movie “The Wizard of Oz” nearly 20 years after they were stolen from a museum in Minnesota. Judy Garland is thought to have used at least seven different pairs of ruby slippers on the set of the 1939 classic. Regarded as among most recognizable items of memorabilia in American film history, the red slippers were, in the movie, gifted to Dorothy by Glinda the Good Witch. He shares three key factors investors should look for when buying stocks in 2023. But in fact, investors may actually be too optimistic right now, according to Joe Mazzola, Charles Schwab's director of trading and education. At this point, Mazzola believes it's pretty clear the Federal Reserve is planning to pause its rate-hiking cycle in June. One key metric Mazzola tracks is the earnings yield spread, or earnings divided by asset price — the inverse of the more widely followed price-to-earnings ratio. Fundamentally, the earnings yield shows an investor how much they're paying for potential earnings, Mazzola explained.
