The union said the tentative agreement follows the pattern agreement Unifor reached with Ford Motor (F.N) last month and includes wage hikes of up to 25%. GM has lost 34,176 vehicles of production since the start of the UAW strike, according to an estimate by Deutsche Bank. GM has laid off 2,300 U.S. workers due to the impacts of the UAW strike.

The walkout by workers came after Canadian union Unifor said GM was "stubbornly refusing" to match the contract the labor union reached with Ford Motor (F.N), which offered wage increases of up to 25% in Canada. The walkout adds to the headache faced by the automaker in the U.S. where it is racking up millions of dollars in losses per week due to the United Auto Workers (UAW) strike that started Sept. 15. GM has lost 34,176 vehicles of production since the start of the UAW strike, according to an estimate by Deutsche Bank. GM has laid off 2,300 U.S. workers due to the impacts of the UAW strike. The used car market took off during the COVID-19 pandemic. As of last month, used pricing had declined nearly 4% year-over-year, according to Cox Automotive's latest Manheim Used Vehicle Index, with one exception: Trucks. Overall, despite slight improvements in the used car market from 2020 and 2021, supply remains tight for used cars today, according to Cox, and is tighter than this same point both last year and pre-COVID. But the plants that are on strike could affect GM’s US operations, because its engines and transmissions are used in vehicles built here. GM already is dealing with a strike by the United Auto Workers union at two of its US assembly plants and a strike of 18 parts distribution centers across 20 states. The UAW is also on strike against plants at GM rivals Ford and Stellantis, which builds cars under the Jeep, Ram, Dodge and Chrysler names. GM had already disclosed that it lost $200 million in the first two weeks of the UAW strike, which began on September 15. The UAW remained on strike at the GM plants where its members had already walked out.

CEO of used-car retailer CarMax , Bill Nash, told CNBC's Jim Cramer it's "a little early" to tell what effect the United Autoworkers Union strike will have on his company's business. "I think as far as the UAW strike [is concerned], it's a little early to tell the impact it's going to have on the business — you know, it really depends on how long it goes, and if there's going to be an expansion," Nash said. The UAW began its strike on three Detroit automakers — Ford Motor , Stellantis and General Motors — last month. CarMax will continue to monitor the strike, Nash said, but added so far it hasn't played into the overall industry. Nash also discussed how inflation and high interest rates are affecting customers looking to buy both newer and older models.

REUTERS/Rebecca Cook/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsOct 9 (Reuters) - Union workers at Volvo Group (VOLVb.ST)-owned Mack Trucks went on strike on Monday after overwhelmingly rejecting a proposed five-year contract, the United Auto Workers said, the latest tentative labor agreement to be voted down. In online forums, some Mack workers complained the raise was too small to keep up with inflation. Canadian workers at GM also face a contract talk deadline at midnight on Monday that could lead to another strike. Mack President Roy said the company "clearly demonstrated our commitment to good-faith bargaining by arriving at a tentative agreement that was endorsed by both the International UAW and the UAW Mack Truck Council." The percentage of Black workers in the auto industry today is more than double their share of the workforce overall. But the decline in US auto jobs and the erosion of unions have hit Black workers hardest. Black workers are likelier to belong to unions, in any industry, compared to White and Hispanic workers. Black union workers earn on average 16.4% higher wages than non-union Black workers, and they are likelier to have health care and retirement benefits, studies show. Hard-won gains disappearSoon after Black auto workers broke into better paying jobs, the US auto industry began its long decline, decimating Black communities in particular.

The Labor Department's closely watched employment report on Friday is also expected to show wage gains remaining elevated. Eighteen months after the Federal Reserve started raising interest rates, the labor market is only gradually easing. Labor market resilience, which is underpinning demand in the economy, raises the risk that the U.S. central bank could hike rates again by year end. Nonfarm payrolls likely increased by 170,000 jobs last month after rising 187,000 in August. GM agreed to have the workers at its future EV battery plants be covered by the national labor agreement governing other UAW members at GM, Fain said, after the UAW threated an expansion of the strike to a GM plant in Arlington, Texas, that assembles the company’s full-sized SUVs. GM has in the past insisted that workers in battery facilities are not GM employees, since the plants are run by joint ventures it has with Asian battery companies. Then on September 29 the UAW declined to expand the strike against Stellantis, once again citing progress in talks, but added a strike against one assembly plant each at GM and Ford. The union has said all along it stood ready to expand the strike to increase pressure on the companies. Fain described the Arlington plant “GM’s biggest money maker.”“It was that threat that brought GM to the table,” he said.
