Trump has also criticized Fox, which is hosting the debate, over its recent coverage of him. Trump campaign spokesman Steven Cheung said nothing had been confirmed on the candidate's debate plans, without elaborating. Representatives for Fox, which parted ways earlier this year with Carlson, and the Republican National Committee could not immediately be reached for comment.

Donald Trump's advisors say he's is "very upset" that Rudy Giuliani was indicted, Maggie Haberman told CNN. Giuliani was indicted alongside Trump in Georgia on Monday night over their attempt to overturn the 2020 election. "One of the ironies right now in the situation around Donald Trump is you will hear some of his advisors say 'He's really upset that Rudy got indicted,' or, leading into this, 'He was really worried about Rudy,'" Haberman told Collins. "But not so worried that he was going to pay Giuliani's legal bills," Haberman said. "According to my reporting, it was Trump who didn't want Giuliani paid unless Giuliani delivered on his promises, and obviously that didn't happen," Haberman said.

WASHINGTON — Democrats on Capitol Hill are forming a new working group on artificial intelligence and prioritizing how to prevent deepfakes from wreaking havoc on personal lives, national security and the upcoming 2024 elections. Rep. Derek Kilmer, D-Wash., will chair the new AI working group in the New Democrat Coalition, a 97-member bloc of House members that typically avoid the spotlight but wield significant influence over policy within the caucus. "There's real concern about the potential for AI generated disinformation, real concern about misuse of advanced AI models," Kilmer told CNBC. Another concerning aspect for many lawmakers is what AI generated images could mean in the world of campaign ads. Ron DeSantis recently used AI in an ad to replicate former president Donald Trump's voice "reading" a post that Trump had written on social media.

But the Trump campaign and their affiliated committees ultimately did not honor that pledge, according to campaign finance records. Over more than two months, Giuliani served as the public face of Trump's election challenges, which ultimately failed. The money came in response to countless fundraising appeals that claimed it was needed to fund Trump's election challenges in court. Chesebro, for his part, told the House committee that the work he did for the Trump team was pro bono. But not a penny more from team Trump for their services.

Brian Kemp speaks to voters during a campaign stop at Williamson Brothers Bar-B-Q on November 3, 2022 in Marietta, Georgia. When Kemp refused to overturn Biden’s 2020 win in Georgia, Trump demonized him and recruited former Sen. David Perdue to challenge Kemp in the 2022 GOP gubernatorial primary. Kemp also testified last year before the Atlanta-area special grand jury probing efforts by Trump to overturn the 2020 election in Georgia. Trump said Wednesday night that he wouldn't sign the pledge to support whoever the Republican nominee is because "I can name three or four people that I wouldn’t support for president." Despite that, Kemp recently told CNN he will “certainly” endorse the 2024 Republican nominee, even if it is Trump.

Trump has said he plans to skip the first Republican debate on Aug. 23 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The second debate will be held at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation in Simi Valley, California on Sept. 27 and be partnered with Univision and Rumble, RNC Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel said in a statement. Former Vice President Mike Pence has qualified for the first Republican presidential primary debate set for later this month, his White House campaign said Tuesday. Pence joins at least half a dozen other candidates who have already clinched spots on the debate stage, including Florida Gov. "Hopefully, former President Trump has the courage to show up," O'Malley said. For lower-polling candidates — a bucket that could include everyone except for Trump and DeSantis — a breakout debate performance could be critical. Asa Hutchinson said last week that his campaign is "close to halfway" toward the donor threshold.

Republican presidential hopefuls have just two weeks left to qualify for the first presidential primary debate, which is set for Aug. 23. Candidates must hit the minimum threshold of 40,000 unique donors and the polling thresholds 48 hours prior to that debate, and also commit to supporting the eventual GOP nominee. So far, seven candidates have appeared to qualify for the debate in Milwaukee: former President Donald Trump, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, businessman Vivek Ramaswamy, former United Nations Ambassador Nikki Haley, South Carolina Sen. Tim Scott, North Dakota Gov. Ambassador Nikki Haley as she struggles to break through the GOP presidential primary field.

Ron DeSantis on Sunday rejected Donald Trump's claim that he was the true winner of the 2020 presidential election in his most forceful comments to date on the matter. DeSantis continued to discuss all the ways he believed the previous presidential election was not perfect. DeSantis' comments come just days after Trump pleaded not guilty to charges that he broke the law by trying to overturn the 2020 election. I don't think it was a good-run election," DeSantis said. Florida has long allowed anyone who wants to vote by mail to do so, including in the 2020 election.

U.S. President Donald J. Trump speaks during the Victory Rally by the Republican National Committee in Dalton, Georgia, United States on January 04, 2021. The Trump campaign attacked the Biden administration and the Department of Justice in a furious statement after the grand jury investigating interference in the 2020 election handed up an indictment. The campaign in a statement did not explicitly say that Trump had been indicted in the special counsel's probe. But his campaign wrote that that "the answer is, election interference!" "President Trump has always followed the law and the Constitution, with advice from many highly accomplished attorneys," the statement said.

Who Has Made It to the First Republican Debate So Far? At least seven candidates appear to have made the cut so far for the first Republican presidential debate on Aug. 23. To participate, each candidate must first satisfy fund-raising and polling criteria set by the Republican National Committee. But even though Mr. Trump is clearly the dominant Republican candidate so far, he has remained noncommittal about attending the debate and questioned his need to share the stage with candidates who lag far behind him in the polls. As for the remaining hopefuls, they have three weeks left to scrape together the necessary donors and polling support.

Steve Wynn, the longtime Las Vegas casino magnate and major Republican donor, has agreed to pay Nevada a $10 million fine and to step back from its gambling industry in a settlement related to employee allegations of sexual misconduct, closing his yearslong battle with the state’s gambling regulators. Mr. Wynn, 81, who did not admit wrongdoing in the settlement, agreed to be “entirely removed from any direct or indirect involvement” with financing, advertising and consulting in the state. The agreement appears to end regulators’ investigations into Mr. Wynn’s conduct, though he could face additional fines if he violates its terms. Mr. Wynn resigned as chairman and chief executive of his casino empire, Wynn Resorts, in 2018, when the misconduct allegations began to emerge more publicly. Amid the fallout, he divested company shares and stepped down from his position as finance chairman of the Republican National Committee.

At a pit stop outside Manchester, Mr. Hurd said he had no issue with championing another Republican. But he said he would not support Mr. Trump. “I’m not going to lie to get a microphone,” Mr. Hurd said, digging into a Philly cheesesteak and salty fries. Back on the road, Mr. Hurd did not downplay the challenges. Proving that group of people indeed exists as a coherent base of support will be the ultimate test of his candidacy.

CNN —Seven Republican presidential candidates have, as of Sunday, met the polling requirements to appear on the August debate stage following new polling from Fox Business in Iowa and South Carolina. Ron DeSantis, tech entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy, former Vice President Mike Pence, former South Carolina Gov. Chris Christie have each reached 1% or higher in at least two qualifying national polls and two qualifying state polls from separate states, which is a requirement set by the Republican National Committee. I will see you at that debate stage.”Of the remaining GOP candidates who have not yet met the polling criteria, former Arkansas Gov. Doug Burgum needs two national polls, and former Texas Rep. Will Hurd and Miami Mayor Francis Suarez each need one state and two national polls to qualify.

CNN —For any Republican presidential candidate not named Donald Trump, making the first primary debate on August 23 in Milwaukee is an essential obstacle to overcome. The Republican National Committee set minimum viability requirements that numerous candidates are having trouble meeting. But the FEC – which is evenly divided between Democrats and Republicans – often struggles to agree on enforcement actions. But that perhaps is not surprising – given how large Trump, his former boss-turned-nemesis, looms over the hard-core Republican base. How is Trump making money these days?

Michigan's fake GOP electors surrendered their phones to avoid being recorded during a 2020 meeting. They face general forgery counts and election law forgery allegations. These 16 fake electors, charging documents say, took extra steps to keep their plot secret. The fake electors were told no recording equipment was allowed inside the building and they were asked to surrender their cell phones to safeguard against possible recording, prosecutors said. Some of the fake electors expressed frustration about how other fake electors were talking about the fake transmission of votes to Congress, according to charging documents.

Mike Pence said it's "challenging" to reach the Republican National Committee's debate stipulations. Some GOP presidential candidates are offering kickbacks in exchange for campaign donations to qualify for the debate. But even with his own troubles, on Tuesday morning he mocked his rival Republican candidates for offering kickbacks in exchange for donations. "We're not offering gift cards, we're not offering kickbacks, we're not offering tickets to soccer games. “This is part of a national coordinated” effort to stop Mr. Trump, she added. The Michigan charges were announced on the same day that Mr. Trump said he received another so-called target letter from Jack Smith, the special counsel for the Justice Department who is investigating his efforts to hold onto power after he lost the 2020 election. Both investigations are part of a reckoning over the conspiracy theories Mr. Trump and his allies have promoted about the election. Outside of Michigan, supporters of Mr. Trump, then the president, pushed to convene slates of fake electors in six other swing states that Mr. Biden actually won. One of those states, Georgia, is the site of a separate criminal investigation involving Mr. Trump himself, who pressured state officials to help him overturn his loss.

Long-shot GOP presidential candidate Mayor Francis Suarez is campaigning off of international soccer superstar Lionel Messi's Major League Soccer debut. He's raffling off front-row tickets to the game to anyone who donates to his campaign. He's one of several GOP candidates utilizing creative tactics to increase their donor numbers. In order to make it to the GOP presidential debate stage, the Republican National Committee stipulates that a candidate must have received at least 40,000 unique donations with at least 200 unique donors coming from 20 or more states. Suarez's ticketing raffle isn't the first creative stunt that GOP presidential candidates have used this go-around to try and qualify for the GOP debate.

Some of the GOP electors in Michigan were local activists who were recruited to serve as “fake electors,” all while inaccurately believing there was still a chance that then-President Donald Trump might secure a second consecutive term. CNN has reached out to the 16 fake electors for comment about the criminal charges. Here’s what we know about the 16 fake electors facing state charges. Meshawn Maddock, 55, was co-chair of the Michigan Republican Party during the 2020 campaign and is married to a GOP member of the Michigan House of Representatives. James Renner, 76, was also brought in later in the process to replace one of the original GOP electors.

Experts, and even some executives overseeing AI companies, say these tools risk spreading false information to mislead voters, including ahead of the 2024 US election. But they now face a perfect storm of factors that could make it harder than ever to keep up with the next wave of election misinformation. Experts worry that the proliferation of generative AI tools, like ChatGPT, could make it easier for bad actors to create election misinformation. OpenAI, the maker of the popular AI chatbot ChatGPT, issued a stark warning about the risk of AI-generated misinformation in a recent research paper. The platforms largely use a mix of human and automated review to identify misinformation and manipulated media.

In the same period in 2019, former President Donald J. Trump and his allies raised a total of $105 million — $54 million for Mr. Trump and his committees, and $51 million for the Republican National Committee.
