New York CNN —Just ahead of World Refugee Day, 41 multinational companies on Monday publicly pledged to provide jobs, training and connections to work opportunities for more than 250,000 refugees in Europe. What different companies are doingAmong the companies that are making new pledges this week, many have already been hiring or training refugees in Europe over the past year. ISS, for instance, has already hired 500 refugees in Europe — a majority of them Ukrainian women — since March of last year. Others making hiring commitments include Adidas, Blackstone, BP, Hyatt, Ipsos, L’Oréal Group, Novartis, PepsiCo, Pfizer and The Kraft Heinz Company. The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees estimates the number of refugees worldwide is now approaching 35 million people, with more than 12 million of them in Europe.

A critical dam in southern Ukraine collapsed on the early morning of June 6, displacing thousands. Experts say the dam's collapse could only happen with a large explosion from within, per NYT. "If your objective is to destroy the dam itself, a large explosion would be required," Michael W. West, a geotechnical and geological engineer, told The Times. The Times reported that a US intelligence satellite also captured infrared heat signals in the area just before the dam fell apart. A senior US military official told the Times that Russian operatives were most likely behind the attack.

AMSTERDAM, June 16 (Reuters) - It is "highly likely" that the collapse of the Kakhovka dam in southern Ukraine was caused by explosives planted by Russians, a team of legal experts assisting Ukraine's prosecutors in their investigation said in preliminary findings released on Friday. Russian President Vladimir Putin has accused Ukraine of destroying the Kakhovka dam as a Western-backed tactic to escalate the conflict. Ukraine is investigating the blast as a war crime and possible criminal environmental destruction, or "ecocide". "Even in the highly unlikely scenario the dam, or indeed the area nearby, posed a valid military objective commensurate with eviscerating the dam, it is still afforded an elevated protection under international humanitarian law," she said. The ICC, the world's permanent war crimes tribunal, is also investigating the attacks on Ukraine's infrastructure, which may violate international law.

Maxar satellite imagery BEFORE the damage to the Nova Kakhovka Dam in Ukraine. WASHINGTON — An international team of investigators said in a new report Thursday that it is "highly likely Russian forces deliberately destroyed" the Kakhovka dam in southern Ukraine. Murdoch, who was part of one of the first delegations to arrive at the site, added the attack on the dam may constitute a war crime. Both Russia and Ukraine have placed the blame squarely on each other for the explosion at the dam. The predawn attack on the Russian-held dam unleashed the worst ecological disaster in Ukraine's history since the 1986 meltdown of Chornobyl.

The $19 billion tie-up will be scrutinised by Britain's Competition and Markets Authority, the antitrust regulator which made global headlines in April when it blocked Microsoft's $69 billion acquisition of "Call of Duty" maker Activision Blizzard. The long-awaited mobile deal reduces the number of networks from four to three, challenging a tenet long held by regulators that four help to keep prices low in major markets. "The government's desire to make the UK a 5G powerhouse requires a lot of investment," he said. One London-based investment banker, who declined to be named, said he put the chance of the deal receiving the green light from regulators at 50%. A major telecoms investor said the deal could be approved, but only with strong remedies, and that could risk undermining its rationale.

Maybe it's the same with tragedy," said 52-year-old Radetska, who is deputy head of a school in the southern Ukrainian city. Pupils include 31 on the Russian-held east bank that was particularly badly hit by the floods, including the town of Oleshky. The past week's events have been a fresh tragedy for Radetska and Remyha, who both recounted threats, imprisonment and torture during Russia's occupation. He said the hospital's staff took risks to give illicit assistance to local Ukrainian soldiers left in the city after the occupation. Russia's FSB did not immediately respond when asked to comment on to the allegations made by Remyha and Radetska.

The company said Friday it will be introduced to all mobile users in the coming weeks. Searches in Gmail are set to become more accurate as Google rolls out a new AI-related feature for smartphone users. Alphabet said in a Friday blog post that mobile Gmail users will soon see a "top results" section when searching for old messages or attachments in their Gmail app. In its blog post Google said the feature was "highly requested", and said it will be rolling out to all Gmail mobile users over the next two weeks. The post only mentions the mobile version of Gmail, so it's unclear whether the "top results" feature will be added to the browser-based version.

Amazon is in talks with several wireless carriers about launching a mobile service for Prime members, according to a report from Bloomberg. The e-retailer is negotiating with Verizon, T-Mobile and Dish about the possibility of reselling their mobile services to its Prime members at low cost or potentially free, Bloomberg reported. Launched in 2005, Amazon Prime members pay $139 a year for access to free two-day shipping, access to exclusive movies and TV shows, as well as newer benefits like generic prescription discounts and Grubhub delivery perks. By partnering up with a company like Verizon or Dish, Amazon would essentially function as a mobile virtual network operator. Instead of owning its own wireless network, the company would purchase data from a large carrier and resell it to consumers.

SummarySummary Companies AI boom brings fresh challenge for investorsAI-themed stocks highly valuedStick with big tech not AI stocks - investorsLONDON, May 26(Reuters) - Experienced tech investors are hunting for undervalued opportunities in an over-valued space. Investors are chasing exposure to generative AI, the technology run by ChatGPT that learns from analysing vast datasets to generate text, images and computer code. Businesses are trying to use generative AI to speed up video editing, recruitment and even legal work. GAM's Hawtin said he has also hunted out companies that provide the "picks and shovels," necessary for enabling new AI technology. Amazon's Bedrock service, for example, lets companies customise generative AI models rather than invest in developing them themselves.

Apple usually plays it so low-key at big industry events, you wouldn't even know the company had attended. It has rented a space at the top of the iconic Carlton hotel, situated on the busy Croisette promenade, according to multiple advertising industry sources. It's also planning a week of programming, with panel topics expected to include sports on Apple TV+, Apple News, apps, and the broadening Apple advertising offering, those sources said. All of which were "not necessarily a strong-point with Apple advertising in the past," Auzins said. Today, Apple's ad business largely consists of search ads sold within the App Store, which Insider Intelligence forecasts will generate $8.7 billion this year.
Residents of mobile home parks in Arizona are being asked to leave, so student housing can be built. Mobile homes, not always mobile, are hard to repair so they're being razed. "We are in the deepest affordable housing crisis we've ever experienced," said Joanna Carr, acting head of the Arizona Housing Coalition. Efforts under way to revitalize old mobile homes have limits. Many park residents are Spanish-speaking immigrants earning minimum wage as landscapers or restaurant workers.
Why Montana’s TikTok ban may not work

The TikTok ban immediately prompted one lawsuit from TikTok users who allege it violates their First Amendment rights, with more legal challenges expected. How can a state ban TikTok? Montana’s new law, SB419, makes it illegal for TikTok and app marketplaces to offer the TikTok service within state lines. How can Montana enforce a TikTok ban? But internet providers are not named as a type of entity subject to the TikTok ban.

“If you can understand the role, the protein structure and role, now you can start developing drugs around that,” Maniar said. Scientists can take around 12 months just to identify a biological target, according to the National Center for Biotechnology Information. Google Cloud’s suite has a three-pronged approach for making that process more efficient. The final component of Google Cloud’s suite helps researchers identify how the protein’s structure interacts with different molecules. But Renger said the company will be able to weed out molecules faster using Google Cloud's suite.
Which type of homeowners insurance you need depends in part on the risks to your home. Southwestern Insurance Group founder David Stuart says that homeowner's insurance can provide financial protection to homeowners against unexpected losses or damages to their home and personal property. But since there are several different homeowner's insurance policies a person can choose from, making the decision of which one is right for you might feel overwhelming or confusing. There are eight different types of homeowners insurance plans — here are four ways to decide which one is right for you. Conlin shares that the HO-6 policy usually complements the homeowner's association master insurance policy, which covers the exterior of the property and shared property.
OpenAI and other AI startups will struggle to match this reach, unless they team up with other tech giants, like Microsoft. After Google I/O this week, it's looking like AI will be another 80/20 situation where a few Big Tech companies benefit the most. Some examples:In Google Docs, ask Google's AI model to help you write a job description. For a Google Slides presentation with photos, you can ask the company's AI model to create speaker notes based on the images. Insider ran into a high-level Google product manager at the conference who'd just watched a developer presentation.
The Metaverse, the once-buzzy technology that promised to allow users to hang out awkwardly in a disorientating video-game-like world, has died after being abandoned by the business world. After a much-heralded debut, the Metaverse became the obsession of the tech world and a quick hack to win over Wall Street investors. Once the tech industry turned to a new, more promising trend — generative AI — the fate of the Metaverse was sealed. But the short life and ignominious death of the Metaverse offers a glaring indictment of the tech industry that birthed it. Roblox, an online game platform that has existed since 2004, rode the Metaverse hype wave to an initial public offering and a $41 billion valuation.
