The last major semiconductor shortage happened during the Covid-19 pandemic amid supply chain disruption and a rise in demand for consumer electronics as people were forced to stay and work at home. These GPUs which are housed in data centers are critical for the training of huge AI models which underpin applications like OpenAI’s ChatGPT. Bain said demand for GPUs and AI consumer electronics could be the cause of a chip shortage. The semiconductor supply chain is spread across multiple companies. “Geopolitical tensions, trade restrictions, and multinational tech companies’ decoupling of their supply chains from China continue to pose serious risks to semiconductor supply.

In a Telegram post late Tuesday, Zelenskyy said he had “discussed the implementation of the peace formula” with Erdoğan. But the Turkish leader appeared to dash any hopes of a fast-track to NATO membership in his interview with NBC News. Turkey's President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan speaking to NBC News' Chief International Correspondent Kier Simmons in New York on Tuesday. Erdoğan linked Sweden’s NATO membership to the U.S. Congress’ approval of a Turkish request to purchase 40 new F-16 fighter jets and kits to modernize the country’s fleet. “Unfortunately, many Western countries remain silent in the face of Israel, and they never took a stance against Israel,” Erdoğan said, adding: “Amongst the NATO allies, unfortunately, there are many countries siding with Israel.

The report also highlights the types of technological issues that are common within massive federal bureaucracies like the Secret Service. Communications were siloed, and the Secret Service "did not ensure it could share information with local law enforcement partners in real time," the report says. Read previewA top Philippine general wants a new US missile system to remain in the country "forever" to boost its defenses and deterrence capabilities. The American weapon, the Mid-Range Capability missile system, has drawn China's ire. The MRC, also known as Typhon, is the US Army's new ground-based missile system capable of firing both the Standard Missile 6 and Tomahawk Land Attack missile. The Typhon system fills a gap in the US arsenal, offering a particularly versatile new land-based intermediate-range missile option as US rivals develop and field similar capabilities. Its ongoing deployment has angered China, which has repeatedly demanded the missile system be removed and accused the US of fueling an arms race.

I work at my clinic 40 hours a week, but I used to spend a lot of my time documenting patient notes outside those hours. AdvertisementLast fall, I started using Suki AI, an AI-powered voice assistant, to help me make notes from patient interactions. I'm in favor of using AI for notetaking, but do have hesitations about using it for other purposes in the medical field. I signed up to trial Suki AI, which I heard the American Academy of Family Physicians endorsed, and a competitor product. I'm all in when it comes to using AI for transcription and summing up visits, but we have to make sure we have appropriate guardrails when going beyond that.

CNN —The United States is working urgently on a plan to mediate a ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah, according to three sources familiar with the matter, as officials eye with deepening concern the prospects of a widening conflict. The efforts come as Israel’s top general said Wednesday that the Israeli military is preparing for a possible ground incursion into Lebanon. Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has given the green light for his government to engage with the US efforts, an Israeli official told CNN. Amos Hochstein, a senior White House adviser, is involved, the source said, adding that the Americans are not talking to Hezbollah directly. Because while there’s a very legitimate issue here, we don’t think that war is the solution,” he told NBC News.

While the words “hyperreal” and “photorealistic” are used to describe his work, Holmes points out that the drawings are “completely unlike” photographic images. The last major semiconductor shortage happened during the Covid-19 pandemic amid supply chain disruption and a rise in demand for consumer electronics as people were forced to stay and work at home. These are often referred to as AI-enabled devices and companies from Samsung to Microsoft have released such products. Bain said demand for GPUs and AI consumer electronics could be the cause of a chip shortage. Bain & Company noted that the semiconductor supply chain is "incredibly complex, and a demand increase of about 20% or more has a high likelihood of upsetting the equilibrium and causing a chip shortage." "The AI explosion across the confluence of the large end markets could easily surpass that threshold, creating vulnerable chokepoints throughout the supply chain," the report added.

CNN —Nearly 200 chemicals connected to breast cancer are used in the making of food packaging and plastic tableware, and dozens of those carcinogens can migrate into the human body, a new study found. Of the recently detected chemicals in food packaging, 40 are already classified as hazardous by regulatory agencies around the world, according to the study. Rates of early-onset breast cancer in women under 50 are increasing, and experts said the trend cannot be explained by genetics alone. A January 2024 update to that list found 921 possibly carcinogenic chemicals, including 642 that may stimulate estrogen or progesterone production, another known risk factor for breast cancer. Since October 8, the day after Hamas’ deadly attack on Israel, there has been regular cross-border fire between Hezbollah and the Israeli military. Hezbollah first fired at Israel to protest the war in Gaza, demanding a ceasefire there as a condition to end its attacks. Should Israel enter full-scale war with Hezbollah, experts say it will face a much stronger threat than Hamas – and commensurate costs. “It’s devastating on the Israeli economy, on Israeli society,” Guzansky said, adding that the impacts will live on for years to come. Domestically, while Israelis showed a greater appetite for fighting at the outset of the Gaza war, polls show that domestic support has waned over the last months.

The statement criticized congressional Republicans for not including additional funding for disaster relief, the Department of Veterans Affairs and the Small Business Administration. The White House also warned that it would oppose any funding cuts to the Internal Revenue Service in final appropriations legislation. President Joe Biden and many congressional Democrats staunchly opposed plans to include the SAVE Act in the government funding bill. But it was Johnson's own caucus members who defeated his initial funding measure, when 14 House Republicans voted against it on Sept. 18. U.S. President Joe Biden addresses the 78th Session of the U.N. General Assembly in New York City, U.S., September 19, 2023. But given the geopolitical backdrop for Biden's speech, there will be little time for victory laps. Since Biden's last UNGA address in September 2023, ongoing wars in Ukraine and Sudan have persisted, while long-simmering tensions in the Middle East have erupted into deadly conflicts. Still, the Biden administration regularly emphasizes its commitment to a ceasefire and hostage deal.
