DARIEN, Ga. — The seven people killed Saturday in a gangway collapse on a Georgia barrier island were all in their 70s, except for one woman in her 90s, the coroner said Sunday. A portion of the gangway which collapsed Saturday afternoon remains visible on Sapelo Island in McIntosh county, Ga., on Sunday. Sapelo Island ferry service will resume Monday using an auxiliary dock, Department of Natural Resources spokesperson Tyler Jones said Sunday. It’s not clear if any of those who died in Saturday's collapse were Gullah Geechee people. Meanwhile, Grovner said, survivors of those who died Saturday will be embraced by the Gullah Geechee and their longstanding fight to exist.

Vice President and Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris (L) holds a moderated conversation with Former US Rep. Liz Cheney, Republican of Wyoming, at People's Light performing arts theater Malvern, Pennsylvania, on October 21, 2024. Vice President Kamala Harris and Republican former Rep. Liz Cheney participated in a series of moderated conversations on Monday across the "Blue Wall" battleground states of Pennsylvania, Michigan and Wisconsin. The Harris campaign is courting disaffected Republicans, who may be on the fence about voting for Trump. The campaign kicked off a "Republicans for Harris" group in August and has since amplified the voices of a small, but growing, number of prominent Republicans who have come out in support of the Democratic vice president. According to Cheney, patriotic Republicans have "a duty and obligation to do what we know is right for the country."

U.S. President Joe Biden speaks as he announces a new plan for federal student loan relief during a visit to Madison Area Technical College Truax Campus, in Madison, Wisconsin, U.S, April 8, 2024. Federal student loan payments for some 8 million borrowers will remain on pause for six months or longer, a spokesperson for the U.S. Department of Education said. The development on Monday comes as the administration has been dragged into a slew of legal battles waged by Republicans over its recent student loan relief efforts. The borrowers who are excused from their monthly payments are those enrolled in the Biden administration's new SAVE plan. Before the legal challenges, the Education Department had already forgiven $5.5 billion in student debt for 414,000 borrowers through the SAVE Plan.

The Supreme Court is visible on July 29, 2024 in Washington, DC. In an op-ed in The Washington Post, U.S. President Joe Biden laid out his proposed reforms to the Supreme Court including 18 year term limits for Supreme Court Justices and a new code of ethics for the court ahead of a speech tonight at the Lyndon B. Johnson Presidential Library in Austin, Texas. Lawyers for Democratic President Joe Biden's administration had urged the Supreme Court to turn away the appeal, arguing that the plaintiffs lacked the required legal standing to sue the agency and that their claims are foreclosed by Supreme Court precedent. The current Supreme Court, with a 6-3 conservative majority, has taken an expansive view of presidential powers in recent years and has shown skepticism toward broad authority for federal agencies. This case gives the conservative justices a chance to rein in or depart from Humphrey's Executor.

CNN —In the year and a half following the Supreme Court Dobbs decision that revoked the federal right to an abortion, hundreds more infants died than expected in the United States, new research shows. They found that infant mortality was higher than usual in the US in several months after the Dobbs decision and never dropped to rates that were lower than expected. In the months that infant mortality was higher than expected – October 2022, March 2023 and April 2023 – rates were about 7% higher than typical, leading to an average of 247 more infant deaths in each of those months. She was not involved in the new study, but does research abortion trends in the US. Abortion bans may affect access to and willingness to seek prenatal care and broader support systems, she said, and the barriers compound.

Harris looks to ‘paint a picture’ for undecided votersSuburban moderates are far from the only group Harris’ campaign is targeting in the race’s closing days. With voters citing the economy and inflation, abortion, immigration and democracy as top issues in this election, the survey tested a series of policy proposals on those topics, offering clues about which policies could move voters. The survey did not identify which party or candidate is associated with the proposal. While economic policies could move voters toward a candidate, the survey also finds that election denialism could turn them off. Voters across swing groups, including suburban women, independents, moderates and seniors, say they are less likely to support a candidate who denies the election results. The NBC News poll of 1,000 registered voters, 898 of whom were reached by cellphone, was conducted Oct. 4-8.

That’s because cocoa prices have more than doubled since the start of the year and have remained at record highs, according to Wells Fargo data shared with CNN. The surging prices have caused grief for confectioners during prime chocolate sales seasons like Valentine’s Day and Easter. The company’s president, Michele Buck, said in a call in August with analysts that cocoa prices are “not sustainable,” and pointed toward higher prices. Though hope is on the horizon, experts project cocoa prices will remain high until at least September 2025. “We want to try to get over a million, maybe 2 million voters in the battleground states to sign the petition in support of the First and Second Amendment. … We are going to be awarding $1 million randomly to people who have signed the petition, every day, from now until the election,” Musk said at a campaign event in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. “This is a one-time ask,” Musk told the crowd shortly after announcing the $1 million prize. “When you start limiting prizes or giveaways to only registered voters or only people who have voted, that’s where bribery concerns arise,” said Derek Muller, an election law expert who teaches at Notre Dame Law School. Sirens wailed Saturday morning in Israel, warning of incoming fire from Lebanon, including a drone launched toward Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's house in Caesarea, the Israeli government said. Meanwhile, in Gaza, more than 50 people, including children, have been killed in several Israeli strikes, in less than 24 hours, according to hospital officials and an Associated Press reporter. He said a Harris administration "will build on existing programs, increasing federal spending to make health care more affordable for people." Still, Socal said a Trump administration wouldn't have much flexibility to dismantle or scale back the law without change from Congress. The IRA extended enhanced subsidies that made ACA health plans more affordable for millions of households through 2025 — a provision Harris plans to make permanent if elected, her campaign said. Robert Roberson, the condemned man whose execution was halted late Thursday because of an unprecedented legal gambit by Texas lawmakers, is expected to appear in person Monday at a legislative hearing in Austin, his legal representatives said. The subpoena was issued to help buy more time for Roberson, who has bipartisan support. The Office of the Attorney General quickly appealed the district court judge’s temporary injunction to the state’s highest criminal court, which agreed with allowing Roberson’s execution to continue. But lawmakers then petitioned their case to the Texas Supreme Court late Thursday as the hours ticked down before midnight — when Roberson’s death warrant was set to expire. State Rep. Brian Harrison, a Republican who helped to introduce the motion to subpoena Roberson, acknowledged Friday that although the execution was blocked, various issues remain at play.

WASHINGTON — Republican Presidential candidate Donald Trump on Friday called the judge overseeing the Jan. 6-related federal criminal case against him "the most evil person," despite threats U.S. District Judge Tanya Chutkan has already faced from his supporters. They do show that Smith’s team is relying upon transcripts of interviews and other information disclosed by the House Jan. 6 Committee, which dissolved after Democrats lost the House in 2022. Chutkan began overseeing the Trump case following his first federal indictment in the Jan. 6-related case in August 2023 and made clear from the beginning that Trump's 2024 presidential candidacy would have no impact on her handling of the case. You know, judge is supposed to keep— what judge would say ‘We’re going to release something, you know, a couple of days before.'" One key to Smith's case is his contention that Trump knew the lies he spread to his followers about the 2020 election were, in fact, false.
